Serving San Diego County since 1880, the San
Diego Humane Society and SPCA’s scope of social
responsibility goes beyond adopting animals.
The Humane Society offers San Diegans a wide
range of programs and services that strengthen
the human-animal bond, prevent cruelty/neglect,
provide medical care and educate the community
on the humane treatment of animals.
As one of San Diego’s oldest nonprofit
organizations, the Humane Society has campuses
in both San Diego and Oceanside and is supported
solely through contributions, grants, bequests,
investments, proceeds from the Muttique retail
store, and small fees for services.
For your privacy, the Humane Society does
not sell, rent, lend or exchange its mailing of
contributor lists.

President’s Message
A Word From
Dr. Judith T. Muñoz
Interim President
As you may already know by now, I am volunteering as the San
Diego Humane Society and SPCA’s interim president and leading
the search committee to find a successor for Dr. Mark Goldstein. In
addition to leading the search with several past and present members of the
Board of Trustees, my role is to maintain the organization’s legacy of success
by continuing its three-year strategic plan with the talented and experienced
management team already in place.
As we make this transition, it is important to highlight that Dr. Goldstein’s
passion, dedication and vision have helped the San Diego Humane Society
become a national model in animal welfare. We are immeasurably grateful for his
numerous contributions and we wish him well in his future endeavors.
Our sights are set on the future and on the goal of achieving even more
on behalf of the animals and people we serve. We are eager to identify a new
president that is both talented and experienced, and is capable of leading the
San Diego Humane Society into the next chapter of success. The past year has
been one of significant progress as demonstrated by the opening of an additional
campus in Oceanside, the dramatic improvements made to Oceanside’s only offleash
dog park, a second Paws Kitten Nursery, numerous successful adoption
events, expanded humane education for youth and adults, and much more.
These achievements have laid a foundation for a new president to continue to
build upon.
One of my first activities in this role was to pay a visit to the North Campus.
There I fell in love with a small black fur ball (a poodle mix)! My husband, Dan,
and I adopted Jackson and he was immediately welcomed into our family by his
big brother, Greystoke (a standard poodle, lab and Australian shephard mix). It
didn’t take me long to adopt a new family member!
The San Diego Humane Society has an extremely talented and dedicated
team of staff and volunteers and their work is invaluable. We all thank you for
your continued support in serving the animals and people here in San Diego. We
truly could not do it without you. We eagerly anticipate this new chapter and the
many new milestones to come. We will keep you informed as we make progress
in our search for a new president and about other important developments
moving forward. In the meantime, feel free to contact us with any questions, we
value your input.

About Dr. Judith T. Muñoz: Dr. Muñoz has more than 30 years of executive-level experience,
having recently retired from The Scripps Research Institute as its Vice President responsible
for the departments of Human Resources, Counseling and Psychological Services, Career and
Postdoctoral Services, and the International Office. She served as a member of the San Diego
Humane Society’s Board of Trustees from 1996 to 2009 and as its Chair for seven years.
From the Mailbox
AnimalFare • Winter 2011
Hi San Diego Humane Society,
We are really happy in our new home in Pacific Beach! We have three floors to run around
on and jump on the resident cat, Precious, who puts up with us. Our new owners renamed us
from Cinnamon and Cheyenne to Thelma and Louise, which seems to fit us better since we are
inseparable. We are the hit at the PB Vet Clinic, since Dr. Farley thinks we are really cute. So far
life is great! We get fed, have tons of toys, and we like to sleep on our owner’s heads at night. Plus,
we get to play in the laundry basket! Thank you so much for finding us such good parents.

Hi all my human friends and animal friends at the San Diego Humane Society,
I just thought you would like to know I am doing great at my new home. My new pack leaders are
really nice and friendly and we go on walks twice every day. I have been to Kellogg beach and also
the dog park that I really like as I meet lots of other dogs. Anyway, thanks again for all the love and
kisses you gave me. I really appreciated it as I know you guys are really busy. I also want you to
know that I am wonderfully happy here and hope that you can help more doggies like me.
I will come over and say “hi” some time.

Hello San Diego Humane Society,
Daizy and Widget have a wonderful and loving home life. They have a huge yard to play and
relax in during the day and know when to come inside for dinner. We enjoy playing with them
and having them as part of our family.

Dear San Diego Humane Society,
Ruby Tuesday has been such a love! You saved her life! She has a great time with her doggie friends
watching the Chargers’ game and she really loves her time at Fiesta Island meeting lots of new friends.
She is so funny; she makes me laugh all the time.
She’s 12-lbs. of energy, movement, and unconditional love. She has big brown eyes, long eyelashes, salt
and pepper colored hair like mine. She is such a joy, she cuddles, she plays, she hikes, and loves life.
Ruby’s foster mother from the San Diego Humane Society literally saved her life and mine. People tell
me I’m much happier now that I have Ruby, and I know that I am.
