range of programs and services that strengthen
the human-animal bond, prevent cruelty/neglect,

As one of San Diego’s oldest nonprofit
organizations, the Humane Society has campuses
in both San Diego and Oceanside and is supported
solely through contributions, grants, bequests,
investments, proceeds from the Muttique retail
store, and small fees for services.

A Word From
Dr. Judith T. Muñoz
Interim President
As you may already know by now, I am volunteering as the San
Diego Humane Society and SPCA’s interim president and leading
the search committee to find a successor for Dr. Mark Goldstein. In
addition to leading the search with several past and present members of the
Board of Trustees, my role is to maintain the organization’s legacy of success
by continuing its three-year strategic plan with the talented and experienced
management team already in place.
As we make this transition, it is important to highlight that Dr. Goldstein’s
passion, dedication and vision have helped the San Diego Humane Society
become a national model in animal welfare. We are immeasurably grateful for his
numerous contributions and we wish him well in his future endeavors.
Our sights are set on the future and on the goal of achieving even more
on behalf of the animals and people we serve. We are eager to identify a new
president that is both talented and experienced, and is capable of leading the
San Diego Humane Society into the next chapter of success. The past year has
been one of significant progress as demonstrated by the opening of an additional
campus in Oceanside, the dramatic improvements made to Oceanside’s only offleash
dog park, a second Paws Kitten Nursery, numerous successful adoption
events, expanded humane education for youth and adults, and much more.
These achievements have laid a foundation for a new president to continue to
build upon.
One of my first activities in this role was to pay a visit to the North Campus.
There I fell in love with a small black fur ball (a poodle mix)! My husband, Dan,
and I adopted Jackson and he was immediately welcomed into our family by his
big brother, Greystoke (a standard poodle, lab and Australian shephard mix). It
didn’t take me long to adopt a new family member!
The San Diego Humane Society has an extremely talented and dedicated
team of staff and volunteers and their work is invaluable. We all thank you for
your continued support in serving the animals and people here in San Diego. We
truly could not do it without you. We eagerly anticipate this new chapter and the
many new milestones to come. We will keep you informed as we make progress
in our search for a new president and about other important developments
moving forward. In the meantime, feel free to contact us with any questions, we
value your input.

About Dr. Judith T. Muñoz: Dr. Muñoz has more than 30 years of executive-level experience,
having recently retired from The Scripps Research Institute as its Vice President responsible
for the departments of Human Resources, Counseling and Psychological Services, Career and
Postdoctoral Services, and the International Office. She served as a member of the San Diego
Humane Society’s Board of Trustees from 1996 to 2009 and as its Chair for seven years.

Hi San Diego Humane Society,
We are really happy in our new home in Pacific Beach! We have three floors to run around
on and jump on the resident cat, Precious, who puts up with us. Our new owners renamed us
from Cinnamon and Cheyenne to Thelma and Louise, which seems to fit us better since we are
inseparable. We are the hit at the PB Vet Clinic, since Dr. Farley thinks we are really cute. So far
life is great! We get fed, have tons of toys, and we like to sleep on our owner’s heads at night. Plus,
we get to play in the laundry basket! Thank you so much for finding us such good parents.

Hi all my human friends and animal friends at the San Diego Humane Society,
I just thought you would like to know I am doing great at my new home. My new pack leaders are
really nice and friendly and we go on walks twice every day. I have been to Kellogg beach and also
the dog park that I really like as I meet lots of other dogs. Anyway, thanks again for all the love and
kisses you gave me. I really appreciated it as I know you guys are really busy. I also want you to
know that I am wonderfully happy here and hope that you can help more doggies like me.

Daizy and Widget have a wonderful and loving home life. They have a huge yard to play and
relax in during the day and know when to come inside for dinner. We enjoy playing with them

Ruby Tuesday has been such a love! You saved her life! She has a great time with her doggie friends
watching the Chargers’ game and she really loves her time at Fiesta Island meeting lots of new friends.
She is so funny; she makes me laugh all the time.
She’s 12-lbs. of energy, movement, and unconditional love. She has big brown eyes, long eyelashes, salt
and pepper colored hair like mine. She is such a joy, she cuddles, she plays, she hikes, and loves life.
Ruby’s foster mother from the San Diego Humane Society literally saved her life and mine. People tell
me I’m much happier now that I have Ruby, and I know that I am.

The 25 th Anniversary Fur Ball was a spinning
success, raising nearly $250,000 that will directly
benefit the animals we serve and the programs we
provide. The beautifully dressed attendees sashayed down
the red carpet making stops to take a souvenir photo, at
the Belle and Beau contest, or to admire the many silent
auction items.
As the sun set to welcome a beautiful evening under
the stars, the 550 human and 200 canine attendees were
entertained by musical guest, Haute Chile and artist,
Stephen Fishwick who rocked the audience with his live art
experience!
The black-tie gala was hosted by Dave Mason of 105.7
The Walrus and the lovely Pamela Howe, featuring an
exquisite dinner by Jeffery Strauss of Pamplemouse Grille.
At the 2011 Fur Ball, we were proud to honor PETCO
and the PETCO Foundation for their dedication and
support of the San Diego Humane Society and 7,000 other
animal welfare organizations across the country. PETCO
Foundation Board President, Charlie Piscitello, was
present to accept this prestigious annual award.
The night was complete as we introduced the true stars
of the evening...two doggie alumni families shared their
miracle moments and the joy that these companions bring
to their lives, bringing tears to the eyes of everyone in
attendance. Immediately following, guests celebrated the
“Dancing with the Dogs” theme by dancing the night away
to the sounds of Grammy award winning, Haute Chile.

Another successful Humane Academy on the books! Forty-nine Humane Officers from across California graduated from the
two-week long Humane Academy in August. The San Diego Humane Society’s Humane Academy is one of only two offered in
California. The academy covers a range of topics from animal handling to evidence collecting to ensure these students are at the
forefront of animal welfare issues and laws. Real life scenarios are simulated to bring classroom training into action, putting
these graduates on the path towards a new career or continuing their career education.

932 Animals “Fell in Love” this Fall!
932 animals found love during September and October’s “Fall in Love” animal
adoption campaign. The San Diego Humane Society teamed up with Escondido
Humane, Chula Vista Animal Care, and the San Diego County Department of
Animal Services to increase awareness of
animal adoption and help more animals,
like Prince and Abby, find loving homes.
“Abby was in our care for 478 days and
Prince for 226 days,” said Elkie Wills of the
San Diego Humane Society. “They’re both
very special dogs and they touched a lot of
people here. We’re so happy they found their
fairytale homes!” The San Diego Humane
Society is committed to caring for each animal
as long as it takes to get them adopted, and

Must Love Kittens!
If you love kittens, then you’ll love the 2 nd season of the show
“Must Love Cats” on Animal Planet! The cast and crew paid a
visit to the San Diego Humane Society’s Paws Kitten Nursery to
feature the uniqueness of the Paws to Success Program.
The show’s host, John Fulton, spent two purrfect days in San
Diego feeding and playing with the kittens. He even snuggled up
and sang them to sleep! Fulton was wowed by the wonderful care
that goes into preparing these tiny kittens for their future homes.
The episode airs in February, stay tuned for the exact date. You
won’t want to miss this behind-the-scenes look at the love and care
that these kitties receive daily at the Paws Nursery.

&Me
The story of how Abbie
changed Michael’s life.

Here comes the big one!

A child’s face lights up as they gently touch a dog for the first time. A
family learns how to stabilize their pet in a medical emergency. Home-
Abbie Girl is a 5-year-old Australian Kelpie. She was
adopted from the Humane Society Silicon Valley
after a rough start to life. Her dad, Michael, has
since then integrated Abbie into his day-to-day life and activities.
Together they share a passion for sports and outdoor adventure.
Abbie started her surfing career in 2008 and since then she has
won several surfing competitions all over California, set the first
Guinness World Record for dog surfing, and even appears in
national commercials. Michael and Abbie now live in San Diego,
so we wanted to share this heartfelt story with other animalloving
members of our community.
The story of Michael and Abbie is one that captures the
impact that people and animals have on each other, and the
bond that is shared…
The story of how I met Abbie isn’t well known. It’s simple
but we hope it inspires everyone to incorporate their pet into
their everyday life, whatever that may mean.
In 2007, I was going through a difficult time. I had never
had a dog before, so I went to the Humane Society just to look.
I visited a few times but never fell in love. One day I tried again
and I saw Abbie. Amidst a paddock of excited, barking dogs,
Abbie sat calmly, eyes studying me. Then she cocked her head
to one side, as if to say, “Well, what are you waiting for?”
They say the dogs pick you, not the other way around.
The staff emphasized that she was traumatized and needed
socialization. Their parting advice was, “Bring her around
with you, so she starts to see the world.” I took that advice
and brought her everywhere. I took her jogging, rollerblading,
cycling and swimming in the ocean. In the beginning, she was
afraid of other dogs, loud noises, men and even dark rooms.
But through sports, Abbie slowly came out of her shell. She
gained confidence in herself, and learned to trust me by working
together as a team.
Bonding through sports was successful; Abbie’s life began to
change from rehabilitation to adventure seeking. On runs and
bike rides, she learned to listen to me for guidance. We started
tackling more complex activities.
In 2008 Abbie entered her first surfing contest. Like
everything we do, we follow three basic rules: 1) it’s about
exercising together, 2) Abbie’s participation is voluntary, and 3)
we communicate interactively.
As a result, Abbie enjoyed surfing so much she developed
a style unique to the sport. I don’t place her on the board; she
jumps on herself. Treats and toys aren’t used to keep her on the
board; surfing IS her treat. While we’re in the water, I have a
few phrases I say to her so she knows what’s going on – “wave
coming,” “turning around.” We even have a secret ritual before
I push her into a wave, and once she lands on the beach. The
more we interact, the more fun it is for her.
Surfing has become the center of our relationship, but
we do many other sports together, including sheepherding
and paragliding. If a timid dog like Abbie can become the top
surfing dog in a few years and set a Guinness World Record,
then every dog has endless potential if they have love and
encouragement.
My relationship with Abbie is special to me because it’s
grounded on activity and adventure. Her life has changed a
lot, but so has mine. I used to do extreme sports for my own
excitement. Now, I do it just to see that little tail wagging and
the big grin on her face. I’ve done more as an athlete with her

People often ask me why anyone should adopt an
animal. My answer is, “Because they rescue you right
back”.

In July, the Ellen Browning Scripps Foundation made a generous
grant to support construction and equipment costs of a humane
education classroom at our North Campus, Airport Road location. Now,
these moments – moments that can strengthen the human/animal bond
for a lifetime – can be a daily reality in the new classroom.
“As an educator for many years, Miss Ellen Browning Scripps
appreciated the lifelong impact of education,” notes Doug Dawson,
Executive Director of Ellen Browning Scripps Foundation.“Humane
Education sparks curiosity and compassion, provides an accessible toolkit
for safe and meaningful interactions with animals, and fosters a positive
relationship with animals and the world around us. The Ellen Browning
Scripps Foundation is pleased to invest in the San Diego Humane Society
and SPCA by supporting a venue for this worthy endeavor.”
When she opened the doors to the completed classroom for the first
time, Dr. Annie Petersen, Education Manager at the San Diego Humane
Society, didn’t have words – she simply sang with joy. “It finally gives
us a space to offer the North County community humane education
programs that we couldn’t offer before,” Dr. Petersen continued.
Under the direction of our humane education staff who have more
than 75 years of combined teaching experience, the available array of
activities in the new space are growing quickly. Upcoming programs
include “Tots and Tales,” geared for preschoolers, “Animal Adventure
Camp” for multiple age groups, interactive classes meeting California
curriculum standards for home-schooled students, and several adult
education seminars such as “First-Aid for Dogs and Cats” and the
“Happy Hour” lecture series.

After months of recovery, Stewie visits with the Humane Officer
that saved him.

It’s not an easy thing to face what you
are most afraid of … to recall a trauma
… to feel pain. Just like human beings,
dogs experience sadness and fear, and
these emotions can be hard to bare.
It’s also not easy to witness a creature, human or animal,
suffer. When the suffering is cruelly or unjustly inflicted, it is
even harder. Stewie was just a puppy when he was rescued from
an abusive situation by San Diego Humane Society Humane
Officers on March 29, 2011. They seized him from his home, filed
for protective custody and began an intensive investigation.
Weighing less than ten pounds, Stewie was carried in through
the doors of the San Diego Humane Society covered in second
and third degree burns. In need of urgent medical attention, he
could barely move and cried in pain. While his head was fluffy
and white, the fur on most of his body was burned off. His skin

until LuAnn Porter and Kenneth Kilgast
met with Stewie that he found his family.
They had recently lost their dog and were
now ready to find another companion to
love and care for again, but what they
weren’t expecting was to be so inspired.
LuAnn and Kenneth met Stewie with an
adoption counselor and were heart-broken
to hear his story. “How could someone do
this to such a loving and sweet puppy? It’s
horrifying,” said LuAnn.
Fortunately, some dogs have a kind of
resilience, a will deep inside them to not
only live fully, but to love fully, and no
adversity or abuse can touch it. One can’t
help but think that Stewie is a creature
we are all meant to learn from. As Zora
Neale Hurston said, “Love makes the soul
crawl out from its hiding place.” Stewie’s
soul, or his truest self, not only crawled
out from its hiding place, but reached
further to inspire the world around him.
LuAnn and Kenneth adopted Stewie
and cannot imagine their lives without
him, “We are thankful to the Humane
Society Officers who rescued Stewie, and
the veterinarians who never gave up on
him. Most of all, we are grateful for our
newest family member and all that he
adds to our lives.” After such a traumatic
start to life, Stewie has helped LuAnn,
Kenneth and countless others find joy and
courage in their own lives.
Stewie gives resilience a face (an
incredibly adorable one) and a name. He
reminds us all that love is quiet power
that urges us to go on and to find the
beauty in life, no matter what it looks
like.

cruelty passed its preliminary hearing,
and will go to trial soon. Randy Lawrence,
Director of Humane Law Enforcement,
suspects that Stewie was intentionally
burned and then neglected for almost a
week with severe injuries.

Later Has Arrived
The Time For Estate Planning Is Now
While most Americans provide gifts to
charities during their lifetimes, only a small
percentage make arrangements to leave
gifts by will or other estate plan. Why is this?
One reason is that more than half of those who pass away
each year do so without an estate plan in place. And among
those who do have an estate plan, many do not know they
can include a distribution to a charity.
These factors explain why we talk so much about wills
and trusts. We believe it is in the best interest of our
friends and supporters to prepare for the future – not
only for their family members, but also for those charities
they supported during their life. The most common
reason we hear for a lack of planning is the siren song of
procrastination, “I’ll do it later.”
For this reason, we have developed a Will Kit to help
