Recognition of Student/School Success
School District No. 67 (Okanagan Skaha) extends congratulations
to the following students/groups for these outstanding examples of
success for APRIL:
Columbia Elementary
Columbia Elementary welcomed Russ Horner to the school, who spoke to all the
students about the Rick Hansen Man in Motion World 25 th Anniversary Tour.
Students were reminded of Rick Hansen's inspiring message of courage, tenacity
and hope. At the end of the assembly, Russ led the entire school in a dance
celebrating the setting and reaching of goals.
Giant’s Head Marathon
Giant’s Head Elementary
Spring is here and the sun is (sometimes) shining!
Students are abuzz talking about the Giant’s Head Marathon. The goal of the
marathon is to inspire kids to fitness and to help develop a love and habit of
regular exercise. We believe a Kid's marathon is a wonderful way to encourage
kids to focus on a BIG goal and it enables them to see progress and feel a sense of
accomplishment each day. The kids from the school will get to run the length of a
marathon, but instead of doing it all at once; they will run it in smaller increments
until they have accumulated 40 km.

Giant’s Head Elementary Continued...
April
The final 2.2 km will be run on Race Day! I want every child to leave this event
feeling like a winner. The event will not be timed. Every child that completes their
accumulated 40km and participates and completes the 2.2km on Race day will
receive a T-shirt that says "Giant's Head School Kid's Marathon. I did the distance!!
42.2km".
It is so great to see the students out running each and every day. I would like to
thank Alana Buckingham for the vision and all the work she is doing to make this
great event come together. We welcome everyone to come on out and cheer on
the kids on race day.
McNicoll Park Middle
The McNicoll Leadership Club put on an incredible school wide
assembly during the afternoon of April 20. Over 200 students
participated in "ORGANIZED CHAOS". During the two hour
assembly there were four or more events taking place
simultaneously. This was an amazing event put on by students for
students.
Outdoor Exploration Centre
Rob Zoppi, Principal, Queen’s Park Elementary School, provided an overview of an initiative that
his school community has been exploring – an Outdoor Exploration Centre. A description of the
centre was provided and the potential opportunities that the centre will create were discussed.
It is anticipated the initiative could cost approximately $125,000 to $150,000 and will be
marketed as a P3 venture – Parent Advisory Council, Private Sector, and Public Funding.
Construction is anticipated to begin in May 2013.
Mr. Zoppi was thanked for all the work he and his staff have put into this project and were
extended best wishes for a successful completion.
Mrs. Donoghue's grade 7-1 class was the first class in the school
to break the 25 million word thermometer in the library. To
celebrate they created a reading related flash mob and
infiltrated several classrooms. Fun was had by all - as McNicoll
Park encourages and celebrates students to read for pleasure. To
date McNicoll students have read over 112 million words!
Naramata Elementary
FAMILY FUN CARNIVAL
Deborah Linton organized a great PAC Family Fun Carnival during the
evening of April 18th. The school gymnasium was filled with lots of fun
games, activities, and the rock & roll spirit. Students and parents
alike had a great time eating cotton candy, playing tombola, bouncing on
the giant bouncy castle, and face painting to name just a few of the
activities available. Thanks to all volunteers for making this event so
successful.
