Nutrition News
Making healthy food choices is becoming an increasing
priority within our school district. Schools are currently
reviewing what is offered to students for hot lunch programs
and for sale in vending machines, etc.
As part of a healthy choices initiative, the school district
has adopted a nutrition policy that adheres to ministry of
Education guidelines established in 2005. By 2009, school
districts must meet the requirements set by these guidelines.
As a result of this new policy, students and parents may see
changes occurring in the schools surrounding the hot lunch
menus and products being offered in the vending machines.
Elementary hot lunch menus are currently being reviewed by
a certified nutritionist who will make recommendations for
necessary changes. We will then begin assisting Middle
Schools and Secondary Schools to implement any revisions
needed.
Support from parents would be very much appreciated as we
work hard to implement healthy food choices for students.
Please think about what your child is packing for lunches and
snacks. Pay attention to both sugar content and sodium
content. Prepackaged foods are usually very high in
sodium.
