Syllabus 2011 / 2012<br />
The main objectives of this course are:<br />
to continue to improve communication skills in French<br />
to improve and elaborate writing skills in French<br />
to allow for spontaneous interaction in French<br />
to encourage independent reading in French<br />
to continue to enhance reading comprehension in French<br />
to expand vocabulary skills<br />
to build confidence in second language practice<br />
to encourage lifelong learning in French<br />
to prepare for mid-terms and the final exam<br />
We will be working on the four essential language competencies:<br />
1. ORAL PRODUCTION (SPEAKING):<br />
…pronunciation exercises, group discussions, presentations, speeches, debates,<br />
etc.<br />
2. ORAL COMPREHENSION (LISTENING):<br />
…TV, Films, music, presentations, guest speakers, etc.<br />
3. READING<br />
…literary excerpts, theatre, magazines, news articles, novels, documents chosen<br />
by the teacher, etc.<br />
4. WRITING:<br />
… grammar exercises, journals, projects and assignments, etc.<br />
STUDENT MATERIALS NESSESSARY FOR CLASS:<br />
1) A binder (1 to 1.5 inch thick) exclusively for French class divided into<br />
four sections: a) verbes/ conjugaisons b) grammaire/ leçons c)<br />
vocabulaire/ expressions idiomatiques d) devoirs/ exercices/ travail<br />
2) A dictionary French/English (the student must have their own copy)<br />
3) A Bescherelle verb conjugation book (there are no extra copies in class<br />
and the student must have their own copy for use at home as well as in<br />
the classroom)<br />
4) Pens, pencils, markers or pencil crayons<br />
5) A journal (the same journal as last year, unless new the class, in which<br />
case, the student will need to acquire a journal for this course)

the classroom and cannot be borrowed to take home as it is shared<br />

EVALUATION:<br />
Participation (about 20% of the mark):<br />
Participation includes all active participation in class activities, exclusive<br />
use of French, group tasks as well as competed class work.<br />
Unit exams and major projects (about 50% of the mark)<br />
Les Q-5 (quizzes) (about 10% of the mark)<br />
Journal writing, homework and minor assignments (about 20% of the<br />
mark)<br />
TERMS 1 + 2 = 80% of the final course mark<br />
FINAL EXAM = 20% of the final course mark
Work Habits:<br />
Work habit marks (G/S/N) will be based on the following elements: homework<br />
completion, arriving prepared for class punctuality, attitude and attention given to<br />
class activities. For example, a mark of « G, S or N » may not necessarily match<br />
ACADEMIC marks in this class. It may be possible to receive an « A » in this<br />
course, as well as an« N » for work habits.<br />
CLASSROOM EXPECTATIONS:<br />
1. ATTENDANCE AND PARTICIPATION: The emphasis in this course is on<br />
developing language skills by communicating regularly in French through<br />
active participation. Regular attendance is essential for accurate and<br />
steady progress in oral/aural fluency as you will frequently receive marks<br />
based on daily achievement and participation.<br />
2. ABSENCES AND MISSED WORK: If class is missed for any reason,<br />
students are responsible for work missed. Parents may call or e-mail the<br />
school and arrange for a homework request to be picked up at the main<br />
office at the day’s end. Students are expected to consult with me<br />
immediately upon their return and to complete any written assignments by<br />
the following class. When an absence is excused, students must then<br />
arrange to come in either at lunch or after school to complete assignments<br />
and tests. Please notify me ahead of time for planned absences. Student<br />
agendas contain further information regarding the policy on absences.<br />
3. LATENESS: Students are expected to arrive on time for class. After<br />
two unexcused lates and/or absences, contact will be made with the<br />
parent(s)/guardian(s). After three unexcused lates and/or absences, the<br />
student will be referred to the school administration.<br />
4. To leave class, there is a sign-out system. The student must ask the<br />
teacher directly at an appropriate time. There will be a clipboard on the<br />
teacher's desk where the student must sign-out and back in with the exact<br />
time or monitoring purposes and in case of a school evacuation, records<br />
are required.<br />
5. HEADSETS / IPods / CELLPHONES etc… Students will not be allowed<br />
to listen to headsets or use cell phones in this class at any time. Please,<br />
do not bring these items to class. If the student is caught with their cell<br />
phone out or communicating with iPod/MP3 devices, that device or phone<br />
will be confiscated for the duration of the class. No negotiations. If the<br />
student is caught with a cell phone or texting device in class, the device<br />
will be confiscated for the duration of the day and can be picked up by the<br />
