Hi, my name is Geoff Charles and I’ve been master in charge of hockey at Scots College for eight years now. Hockey has continued to go from strength to strength within the college over the past few years culminating with various teams making semifinals/finals of their respective grades and the 1 st XI winning the ‘Johnson Cup’ in 2011. 2012 is shaping up to be the most successful one yet with a record number of boys signing up to hockey and with the hockey club being well resourced in terms of outstanding coaches and managers. CAPTAIN OF HOCKEY For 2012 this is HARRY MISKIMMIN (pictured). Harry has been a member of the 1 st XI for five years and is a Wellington age-group representative. In 2011, he also made the NZ Under 18 team. This is the first installment of our club newsletter which usually gets published weekly during terms 2 & 3 under the guise of ‘Drag-Flicked’. This newsletter should contain all the prudent information for the start of the season with key dates, times and places to be. TEAMS For the 2012 season we will again be entering five teams in the Wellington Secondary Schools competition. Teams will be entered into the following competitions: • 1 st XI – Premier One • 2 nd XI – Premier Three • 3 rd XI – Reserve Three (Years 9-11) • 4 th XI – Reserve Three (Years 11-13) • 5 th XI – Reserve Four (Year 9-10 – mostly novice) Harry Miskimmin (Captain of Hockey 2012) TRIALS Team trials have been set for the following dates: • 1 st XI/2 nd XI – Monday 19 th March (4-5pm @ National Hockey Stadium [NHS]) • 3 rd /4 th /5 th XI’s: Monday 26 th March (5-6pm @ NHS) • NOTES: 1. 1 st XI/2 nd XI trials are for players who were members of the 1 st -3 rd XI’s in 2011 or new players to the college in Year 9 and above who have representative experience 2. All other players should attend the 3 rd /4 th /5 th XI trials 3. The 1 st XI/2 nd XI are ‘open’ teams – purely based on ability, not age; whereas the 3 rd /4 th /5 th XI’s will generally be based on age with ability taken into consideration for the 3 rd XI 4. UNIFORM
A sports uniform review was undertaken by the ‘Board of Governors’
during 2011.The final design for the new hockey uniform can be seen
here.
This is the uniform that all members of the 2 nd to 5 th XI’s are to use
for the 2012 season. The 1 st XI will use its current uniform in 2012,
with it looking to be replaced in either 2013/2014.
All these items can be purchased from the college uniform shop &
should be able to last each player for the duration of their Scots
College hockey playing career.
For boys who are in Year 13 and their final year, there is no
expectation that you should need to purchase this new ‘shirt’.
If a suitable alternative can be arranged then that will be more
than fine. If you are unsure, see Geoff Charles.

PREP HOCKEY (Y7-8)
In 2012, prep hockey is again ably led by Jonn Nicholson. He has been in this role for many years as
well as his outside commitments to Wellington & NZ hockey.
Boys seeking places in our Year 7&8 1st XI have already trialed and been selected in preparation for a
tour of Melbourne in September. Needless to say the boys are pretty excited about the prospect of
playing games in Australia against Scotch College, Trinity Grammar, Melbourne Grammar and
Camberwell Grammar. This week they have already started their fitness training programme.
PUBLICATIONS AND USEFUL LINKS
There are many ways to keep abreast of the goings-on within Scots College hockey. The club
newsletter ‘Drag-Flicked’ is generally a weekly publication that is emailed home throughout terms two
and three to update all interested parties on team’s results and other general information.
There is also a web-page on the college website where all publications are uploaded. A copy of the
SCHC Strategic Plan is available for all to see as well as attached to this newsletter.
Useful web Links:
o College website (Go to: http://www.scotscollege.school.nz/hockey)
o
CALENDAR
Please find attached on the front page a list of hockey-related activities coming up within the next
month or two. This calendar is regularly updated in the ‘Drag-Flicked’ newsletter. There are still a
number of fixtures, both secondary and prep that will need to be added.
FUNDRAISING
Throughout the year we have many fundraising opportunities. For the most part this takes the form of
operating a bar at Westpac Stadium for a variety of events. A small percentage from a personal
fundraised effort goes towards coaching with the remaining being kept for individual families who can
use this money for subscriptions, tournaments, tours, etc.
If you are interested in joining a keen bunch of parents (& boys) with fundraising then please contact
me.
The next fundraising opportunity is on Saturday 17 th March for a Super Rugby Hurricanes’ game.
Other activities that are in the process of being planned are a ‘Lanes’ bowling night and potentially a
school dance.

PARENTAL HELP
If you are able, willing & interested in helping with your son’s team, certainly in terms of umpiring &
transport, then once teams have been organised please contact your son’s team manager.
COSTS/SUBSCRIPTIONS
You are probably aware, hockey is not necessarily the cheapest sporting to be actively involved in.
Please be rest-assured I will endeavor to keep player subscriptions as low as possible which will be
charged out at the end of the season. Costs that have to be taken into account are: NZ & Wellington
Affiliation fee’s, turf/games fee’s, transport, equipment & coaching costs.
The following is an estimate of the likely ball-park figures for 2012 (based on current information):
1 st & 2 nd XI’s: $200-250 per player
3 rd -5 th XI’s” $125-175 per player
TOUR ASPIRATIONS
This year both the Secondary 1 st XI & Prep 1 st XI are undertaking tours to Singapore/Malaysia &
Melbourne respectively. These are exciting opportunities for the all the boys and parents involved and
are on the back of hugely successful tours to China & Melbourne in 2010. We would encourage all
hockey players to work hard throughout the season and aspire to win a place of such a tour in the
coming years.
CLUB STRATEGIC PLAN
Pleased see the hockey club ‘strategic plan’ attached on the last page. The club has some clear goals
which we hope will foster the development of all hockey players within the college. If you require any
information about this please do not hesitate to contact me.
CONTACTS
