Enabl<strong>in</strong>g people to take personal and<br />

collective responsibility <strong>for</strong> themselves<br />

and more resilient communities.<br />

Some communities, however, still foster<br />

<strong>in</strong>tolerance and prejudice towards those<br />

who seem different. In particular, stamp<strong>in</strong>g<br />

out sectarianism and hate crimes aga<strong>in</strong>st<br />

society requires long-term ef<strong>for</strong>t and<br />

a community-led approach to promote<br />

respect <strong>for</strong> the rights of others.<br />

We have always supported <strong>Scotland</strong>’s<br />

diverse communities and must cont<strong>in</strong>ue to<br />

lower barriers and elim<strong>in</strong>ate fear and<br />

distrust to achieve the “One <strong>Scotland</strong>” aim<br />

of tackl<strong>in</strong>g sectarianism, racism and<br />

bigotry.<br />

Priority 7: Tackl<strong>in</strong>g hate crime and<br />

sectarianism<br />

Approach:<br />

• Invest £9 million over three years to<br />

tackle sectarianism <strong>in</strong> <strong>Scotland</strong> by<br />

heal<strong>in</strong>g divides which cause fear,<br />

mistrust and suspicion of others.<br />

• Tackle the underly<strong>in</strong>g reasons <strong>for</strong><br />

sectarian behaviour.<br />

• Give victims more confidence to report<br />

hate crimes by strengthen<strong>in</strong>g legislation<br />

to ensure that victims receive a good<br />

service from the police and justice<br />

agencies.<br />

• Fund both the <strong>Scottish</strong> Inter Faith<br />

Council to support <strong>in</strong>terfaith relations<br />

and “Belief <strong>in</strong> Dialogue”, a good practice<br />

guide to improv<strong>in</strong>g relations created by<br />

the <strong>Scottish</strong> Work<strong>in</strong>g Group on Religion<br />

and Belief Relations.<br />

• Provide nearly £9 million dur<strong>in</strong>g<br />

2012/15 to tackle racist attitudes<br />

and improve the lives of m<strong>in</strong>ority<br />

ethnic communities <strong>in</strong> <strong>Scotland</strong>.<br />
