<strong>The</strong> local people have hated <strong>the</strong>m all <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> depth of <strong>the</strong>ir hearts for a long time. As soon<br />

as <strong>the</strong> crisis comes <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> alarm is sounded wicked elements take advantage of <strong>the</strong> situation<br />

[<strong>and</strong> start a revolt]. Vagabonds jo<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>m; <strong>and</strong> ignorant, destitute people, after hav<strong>in</strong>g been<br />

subjected to some pressure [applied by <strong>the</strong> rebels] <strong>and</strong> hav<strong>in</strong>g found it impossible to get food,<br />

follow <strong>the</strong>m gladly. <strong>The</strong> conditions for a great upheaval are thus brought to completion. 133<br />

Of course, fam<strong>in</strong>e <strong>and</strong> economic depression were also factors facilitat<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> <strong>Red</strong> <strong>Turban</strong><br />

development. <strong>The</strong> worst floods along <strong>the</strong> Pearl River dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> years of 1852 <strong>and</strong> 1853, for <strong>in</strong>stance,<br />

compelled many helpless people to turn to Ti<strong>and</strong>ihui groups. 134 <strong>The</strong> <strong>in</strong>flation of silver, <strong>the</strong> devaluation of<br />

co<strong>in</strong>s, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> rapid <strong>in</strong>crease of prices for daily commodities affected <strong>the</strong> Pearl River Delta areas. Dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong><br />

widespread fam<strong>in</strong>e of 1853 <strong>and</strong> 1854, rural <strong>in</strong>surgent led by local Ti<strong>and</strong>ihui lodges simply overran <strong>the</strong><br />

countryside. 135<br />

Taip<strong>in</strong>g Connection<br />

Ano<strong>the</strong>r opportunity for <strong>the</strong> development of <strong>the</strong> <strong>Red</strong> <strong>Turban</strong>s was <strong>the</strong> Taip<strong>in</strong>g rebellion. <strong>The</strong>re is no<br />

doubt that <strong>the</strong> advent of <strong>the</strong> Taip<strong>in</strong>g had a considerable effect on most of Ch<strong>in</strong>a. It encouraged <strong>the</strong> spread of<br />

rebellion even among those who knew little or noth<strong>in</strong>g about its ideology. It certa<strong>in</strong>ly did so <strong>in</strong> Guangdong as<br />

well. <strong>The</strong> Q<strong>in</strong>g government was mortally afraid that <strong>the</strong> Taip<strong>in</strong>g would l<strong>in</strong>k up with <strong>the</strong> <strong>Red</strong> <strong>Turban</strong> rebels<br />

<strong>and</strong> magically transform <strong>the</strong>m <strong>in</strong>to a military juggernaut. In <strong>the</strong> sources, an occasional statement can even<br />

be found to <strong>the</strong> effect that <strong>the</strong> Taip<strong>in</strong>g leaders <strong>in</strong>structed <strong>the</strong> <strong>Red</strong> <strong>Turban</strong> leaders <strong>and</strong> o<strong>the</strong>rs on tactics <strong>and</strong><br />

molded <strong>the</strong>m <strong>in</strong>to effective troops. A memorial of Ye M<strong>in</strong>gchen said, ‘<strong>The</strong> rebellious b<strong>and</strong>its of Jiangnan had<br />

secretly sent <strong>the</strong>ir cohorts back to Guangdong to get all evil elements <strong>in</strong> league with <strong>the</strong>m <strong>and</strong> start riots at<br />

<strong>the</strong> same time. Gaom<strong>in</strong>g, Shunde, Huilai <strong>and</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r districts <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> city of Chaoq<strong>in</strong>gfu had been lost to<br />

<strong>the</strong>m.’ 136 Inspired by <strong>the</strong> Taip<strong>in</strong>gs’ triumph at Nanj<strong>in</strong>g, <strong>and</strong> encouraged by Hong’s envoys, <strong>the</strong> local<br />

Ti<strong>and</strong>ihui lodges launched <strong>the</strong> <strong>Red</strong> <strong>Turban</strong> rebellion <strong>in</strong> 1854 at Dong’guan. 137 If <strong>the</strong> Taip<strong>in</strong>gs had not been<br />

well settled <strong>in</strong> Nanj<strong>in</strong>g, <strong>the</strong> <strong>Red</strong> <strong>Turban</strong>s would not have been so dar<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> so successful <strong>in</strong> tak<strong>in</strong>g many<br />

cities.<br />

Certa<strong>in</strong>ly <strong>the</strong>re were a number of observable similarities between <strong>the</strong> Taip<strong>in</strong>gs <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Red</strong><br />

<strong>Turban</strong>s <strong>and</strong> some lead<strong>in</strong>g leaders gave <strong>the</strong> <strong>Red</strong> <strong>Turban</strong>s a ready welcome as recruits. For <strong>in</strong>stance, both<br />

shared a hatred for <strong>the</strong> Manchus, went unshaven, wore cloth<strong>in</strong>g after <strong>the</strong> style of <strong>the</strong> late M<strong>in</strong>g dynasty, <strong>and</strong><br />

dressed <strong>the</strong>ir heads with red turbans. <strong>The</strong>se various facts demonstrate substantial Taip<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>fluence over<br />

<strong>the</strong> <strong>Red</strong> <strong>Turban</strong> rebellions. 138 Both groups were able fighters <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> eyes of <strong>the</strong> imperial government, <strong>and</strong><br />

134 <strong>The</strong> summer of 1853, Guangdong had <strong>the</strong> worst floods ru<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g many crops that eventually led much of<br />

rural population <strong>in</strong>to starvations. See Daq<strong>in</strong>g lichao shilu, Xianfengchao, 67.19 Imperial Edict (Sept. 11,<br />

1852); Idem., 104.25. Imperial Edict (Sep. 26, 1853).<br />

135 Records <strong>in</strong> local gazetteers dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> 1850s give enough evidence to show that climatic calamities fell<br />

upon almost <strong>the</strong> entire area of <strong>the</strong> Pearl River Delta. See Guangzhou Fuzhi, 163.35b-36b; Huizhou Fuzhi,<br />

137 It was undeniable fact that <strong>the</strong> <strong>Red</strong> <strong>Turban</strong> rebels grasped opportunity to rise up created by <strong>the</strong> success<br />

of <strong>the</strong> Taip<strong>in</strong>gs. See Yong, Sohak, 63; F.O. 931.1394 A report from <strong>the</strong> act<strong>in</strong>g prefect of Chaozhou to<br />

Governor of Guangdong. (June 9, 1853).<br />

138 Some <strong>Red</strong> <strong>Turban</strong> rebel groups tried to imitate <strong>the</strong> Taip<strong>in</strong>gs <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir imperial ambitions. For <strong>in</strong>stance,<br />

Chen Kai adopted presumptuous titles of k<strong>in</strong>gs <strong>and</strong> symbols of flags that have been approximately <strong>the</strong> same<br />

as <strong>the</strong> Taip<strong>in</strong>gs. <strong>The</strong> flags <strong>and</strong> uniforms of <strong>the</strong> <strong>Red</strong> <strong>Turban</strong>s were largely imitations <strong>in</strong> color <strong>and</strong> style of <strong>the</strong><br />

Taip<strong>in</strong>gs’ flags <strong>and</strong> uniforms. After occupy<strong>in</strong>g Huaxian, Chen Kai even put <strong>the</strong> characters on his flag,<br />

“<strong>Heaven</strong>ly K<strong>in</strong>g of <strong>the</strong> Taip<strong>in</strong>g K<strong>in</strong>gdom 太 平 天 國 正 命 天 王 .” See Luo Baoshan 骆 宝 善 , “Guangdong<br />
