secret societies tended to come directly from those classes of society conspicuous for <strong>the</strong>ir poverty, <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

despised occupation <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir <strong>in</strong>ferior <strong>in</strong>scriptive status, which also implied an absence of effective k<strong>in</strong>ship<br />

ties. For this drift<strong>in</strong>g population most of whom were likely to be men of an economically lower status, secret<br />

societies were sometimes explicitly political tools, to be wielded aga<strong>in</strong>st <strong>the</strong> local authorities or even <strong>the</strong><br />

dynasty, ei<strong>the</strong>r for reform or –more likely—rebellion. Table 1 presents <strong>in</strong>formation on <strong>the</strong> occupational<br />

background of thirty-four major rebel leaders. Over eighty percent of <strong>the</strong>se leaders were from <strong>the</strong> rootless<br />

sector—disb<strong>and</strong>ed soldiers, stroll<strong>in</strong>g player, local toughs, vagrants, etc. 79<br />
