Celebrating 150 years 

Reflecting on our history and preparing for the future 

The Buffalo Society of Natural Sciences is at a pivotal point in our strong 150 year 

history. The past few years have been well spent planning and developing an 

implementation plan for a major change in our visitor engagement model. This 

past year, we began the process of transforming the Museum and Tifft Nature 

Preserve experiences to be more enriching and interactive and to meet the 

needs of what today’s visitors want. 

New to the museum are two very large additions; Seymour-a 12 foot tall 

Mastodon and Stanley a 26-foot long Albertosaurus located in Hamlin Hall. 

We have opened our first of eight planned immersive learning 

environments; Explore YOU presented by Independent Health. This 

experience focuses on health sciences and medical innovations in 

the Buffalo Niagara region. Updating our permanent exhibit areas 

into themed experiences we call Science Studios will enable us 

to incorporate interactive and hands-on exhibit experiences that 

will reinforce the NYS Core Curriculum and promote the science, 

innovation and research happening here, in our community. Explore 

YOU has received overwhelmingly positive feedback from our visitors 

and regional educators. 

While we have been busy at the Museum, the important work at Tifft 

Nature Preserve continues. During this past year, Tifft Nature Preserve 

had both facility and electrical upgrades that have incorporated green 

building techniques and materials that will improve energy efficiency 

and support a greener footprint. In addition, we have installed a 

geothermal energy system and thanks to our partner Solar Liberty, 

solar technology is being used at Tifft to demonstrate how nature and 

natural environments can work together to achieve sustainability. 

Serving as a hub for environmental education, our programming workshops have been so successful that we are currently at 

capacity and are seeking funding to expand the environmental education center to keep up with the demand. 

As we continue to move forward, 2013 is going to be another exciting year for the Museum and Tifft Nature Preserve. 

At the Museum, we will open two more Science Studios; In Motion and Invertebrates and our featured traveling 

exhibit BODY WORLDS Vital will be open during the summer. Tifft Nature Preserve will continue to its environmental 

education programming during its next phase of construction of the sustainability center. 

This annual report is a glance at our rich accomplishments at the Museum and Tifft Nature Preserve. We appreciate 

the dedication and continued support from our partners, our donors, members, the community and our hardworking 

Board of Managers and staff in keeping the passion and curiosity of science and nature relevant Western New York.

Tifft Nature Preserve 

Plans for Sustainability Center within reach 

In 2010, the Buffalo Museum of Science was awarded $500,000 in funds over two years from the Niagara River 

Greenway for facility upgrades and expansion planning for a new Sustainability Center at Tifft Nature Preserve. 

Both 2011 and 2012 showed great strides in accomplishing the objectives of this funding. 

Physical Improvements 

Stieglitz Snyder Architecture completed the site plan 

and worked on the construction documents for the new 

Tifft Sustainability Center. Geothermal wells were dug 

and connected via an underground trench for the new 

heating and cooling system under the supervision of the 

John W. Danforth Company. This energy efficient system 

will not only provide savings, it will serve as a teaching 

tool focal point of the green features of the building.

The mechanical and electrical room was relocated to increase the 

building’s capacity for the new heating and cooling system, 

solar panels, and the future expansion of the building. In 

addition to the heating and cooling system, upgrades such as 

energy efficient windows, increased insulation, high efficiency 

appliances, duct work and renovation of the restrooms that 

included water conservation and energy efficient fixtures 

was also completed. These improvements will not only 

benefit the environment but will be used as teaching tool 

and demonstration site for green and sustainable building 

techniques. 

Programming 

At Tifft Nature Preserve, programming continued to thrive. 

Through tours, workshops, discovery camps, scout programs, 

outreach and events, Tifft strives to connect children and their 

families with nature through hands-on experiences that fulfill the 

mission of Valuing Nature’s Wisdom. 

Collaborative efforts also continue to grow at Tifft. In our third year, 

Science Outdoors family programming was provided throughout the 

summer at the Erie Canal Harbor Canalside connecting the rich history 

of Tifft to the popular area that has become Canalside. 

Next Year 

In 2013, we expect Tifft Nature Preserve to move to its next phase of construction with our goal of seeing our 

Sustainability Center building project fully realized.

Science Studios 

Making our collections relevant with interactive displays 

Building on research and the best practices at other museums, the Buffalo Museum of Science developed the concept 

of Science Studios, areas within the museum – each at 1,700-3,000 sq. feet – focused on a specific science theme, that 

are highly interactive and changeable. The plan includes the development of nine studios. 

• Early Childhood: Explorations Opened June 2010 

Focus: early childhood experience encouraging adult-child interaction through play and discovery 

• Health Sciences: Explore YOU presented by Independent Health Opened in March 2012 

Focus: health, wellness and the great strides in science being done by area researchers 

• Earth Systems Opened October 2012, presented by the Ackerman Family 

Explore dramatic weather events and even learn how the planet’s natural forces such as wind, water, and our sun’s 

rays can be used for energy. 

• In Motion June 2013 

An action-packed testing laboratory where visitors can become scientists and 

explore the physics of motion by building their own devices and conducting their 

own experiments. 

• Invertebrates October 2013 

Interactive exhibits and media displays make a usually microscopic 

experience larger than life. This tourist draw and teaching model will 

incorporate our vast entomology collection combined with live insects. 

• Culture 

Using elements from our collections, explore the differences and 

similarities between facets of world cultures such as toys, food, 

music, body decoration, and even ideas about the afterlife. 

• Biodiversity 

Explore Western New York’s own environment and learn how to 

identify the region’s plants and animals. Detailed exhibits 

will also explore the relationship between Western New York’s 

environment and other ecosystems around the world. 

• Extinction

All studios are anticipated to be completed by October 2015 - one every six months - dependent on funding secured. 

The creation of Science Studios will provide the impetus for audiences to see us as a relevant destination again, and 

see their community as a vibrant, vital place to learn, work and live. Offering visitors an engaging and fun hands-on 

experience, combined with the richness of our collection of over 700,000 assessioned objects, will make the Museum 

a powerful draw for young families. Changing themes and featured activities in Science Studios will also offer an 

incentive for a return visitation increasing attendance and earned income.
