Summary and Conclusion<br />

1. Work over the past years and espeeially results of the past few years<br />

<strong>in</strong>dieate that type-C viral or viral related genetie <strong>in</strong>formation exists <strong>in</strong><br />

humans.<br />

2. We do not know how this <strong>in</strong>formation entered humans or whether it<br />

eauses disease, but it is of <strong>in</strong> te rest that the probes from the viruses used to<br />

deteet this <strong>in</strong>formation are from the very same viruses whieh we f<strong>in</strong>d ean<br />

affeet growth and differentiation of some human hematopoietie eells.<br />

3. The status of aetual virus isolates from humans, though eneourag<strong>in</strong>g<br />

beeause of similarities of isolates from five different laboratories, rema<strong>in</strong><br />

very perplex<strong>in</strong>g and so far have not been espeeially <strong>in</strong>formative to human<br />

leukemogenesis.<br />

4. In the near future we hope to clone <strong>in</strong> baeteria the viral related sequenees<br />

deteeted <strong>in</strong> human DNA <strong>in</strong> order to more preeisely determ<strong>in</strong>e their ehemieal<br />

and biologie al properties. The HL-60 system mayaiso afford an opportunity<br />

to purify reeeptors for CSF. When CSF and other, perhaps more important,<br />

regulatory faetors are purified, we would like to determ<strong>in</strong>e if they<br />

b<strong>in</strong>d differently to leukemie and normal eells.<br />
