The present data indicate that even in the group of responders different blast cell reduction rates were achieved. They ranged from a total of 2.0 to 3.910g 10 during the 5 day treatment period, suggesting that different amounts of residualleukemic cells may remain after therapy within a group of patients who all fulfill the hematologic criteria for a complete bm response. Quantitation of therapeutic response may therefore result in a quantitative assessment of remission status which may become a determining prognostic factor for remission duration, especially since increasing evidence suggests that maintenance chemotherapy has a minor or even no effect on the duration of complete remission (Lewis et al. 1976; Omura et al. 1977; Sauter et al. 1980; Vaughan et al. 1980).
