The present data indicate that even<br />

in the group of responders different blast cell<br />

reduction rates were achieved. They ranged<br />

from a total of 2.0 to 3.910g 10 during the 5 day<br />

treatment period, suggesting that different<br />

amounts of residualleukemic cells may remain<br />

after therapy within a group of patients who all<br />

fulfill the hematologic criteria for a complete<br />

bm response. Quantitation of therapeutic response<br />

may therefore result in a quantitative<br />

assessment of remission status which may<br />

become a determining prognostic factor for<br />

remission duration, especially since increasing<br />

evidence suggests that maintenance chemotherapy<br />

has a minor or even no effect on the<br />

duration of complete remission (Lewis et al.<br />

1976; Omura et al. 1977; Sauter et al. 1980;<br />

Vaughan et al. 1980).<br />
