been found, especially as a superinfecting pathogen; it is quite possible,
therefore, that an acyclovir prophylaxis is a useful consideration. Respiratory
infections occurred in two of our patients. Both developed pneumonia during
the first month after ABMT. One died as a direct consequence of the
pneumonia (bacterial pulmonary superinfection on a previous pneumonia of
unknown origin), and the second died as a result of multiple organ failure
while his pneumonia was improving. In our experience, lat interstitial
pneumonia and CMV infection or reinfection has not occurred as a
complication of ABMT.
