remained unexplained (PI). No doubtful infections were observed. Of MDI,<br />

55% were septicemias and 45% localized infections (4 of 9 urinary tract<br />

infections and 5 of 9 necrotizing stomatitis).<br />

Table 3 shows the MDI-causing pathogens. Gram-positive bacteria<br />

represented 60% of all isolates (14 of 23) and gram-negative, 35% (8 of 23). In<br />

one patient the infectious episode was primarily sustained by a reactivated<br />
