reported (5-8). Young's analysis of the conflicting results of these studies is a
useful review (9). Our findings, in addition to the recently reported experiences
of the EORTC International Antimicrobial Therapy Project Group (10)
and Henry et al. (11), make the usefulness of this prophylactic regimen
appear quite uncertain.
We conclude that infectious complications in patients undergoing ABMT
are substantially different from those reported in other immunocompromised
patient populations. We are performing multivariate analysis of our data to
further elucidate factors associated with the development of infectious complications
in conjunction with ABMT. Further prospective study of the issues
raised by this type of retrospective analysis are required to develop specific
guidelines for infection prevention and treatment in this unique patient
population.
