Apprentices Sebastian Schneider (left)
and Stephan Kilian (right)
during their internship at SCHÜTZ UK.
Apprentices benefit from training programme:
International
Work Experience
“The four weeks in England were really super. We learned lots
of new things and speak the language far more fluently now.
It will be much easier for us to communicate with foreign
co-workers and business partners in English in future.” Just three
sentences, but they speak volumes.
These words were taken from the
internship report of our commercial
apprentice Sebastian Schneider.
Actually, he could hardly have found
a better, neater description for the
experiences he and his co-worker
Stephan Kilian had the opportunity
to gain as participants in a remarkable
project in the United Kingdom.
Here at SCHÜTZ, we have always taken
our responsibility for training young
people very seriously and are constantly
on the lookout for new opportunities
and ways to encourage and train young
people embarking on their careers. In
autumn 2009, we decided to offer
apprentices the chance to spend some
time working at one of our foreign subsidiaries
and successfully sought the
co-operation of the Federal Institute for
Further Education and other institutions.
We also worked closely with Christoph
Braun, who teaches at the vocational
training college in Montabaur, to
develop an internship concept. In the
end, Sebastian Schneider and Stephan
Kilian became the first apprentices to
benefit from the project by doing a stint
of work experience at the subsidiary of
their choice, SCHÜTZ UK. The success of
the undertaking is largely due to Christoph
Braun, who demonstrated his great
commitment to and enthusiasm for the
project by taking on most of the organisational
and administrative tasks.
Enthusiasm all along the line
As internationalisation progresses, it is
important for apprentices to participate
in programmes of this kind in order to
gain an insight into the way other companies
work, foreign ones in particular.
A second aspect is, of course, that a stint
abroad presents an ideal opportunity to
2
hone foreign language skills, something
that is generally easier to do among
local native speakers.
Since these objectives are right in line
with our global orientation and corporate
philosophy, SCHÜTZ made the
spontaneous decision to participate in
the project.
To find just how successful the internship
turned out to be and what a positive
impression it made on our apprentices,
we simply need to take another peek
into the trainee’s report. “After a couple
of days, we found that working in
England wasn’t nearly as difficult as we
had originally expected because the UK
team uses the same SAP transactions
as we do here in Germany. So we soon
knew what we were doing and were
even able to give our English co-workers
a few tips. It was exactly the same with
the language; any problems we had to
start with disappeared after the first few
days,” writes Sebastian Schneider.
The period of work experience abroad
also made its mark
in terms of character
development and
social aspects. “Our
English co-workers
were very kind to us
and happy to lend a
helping hand during
and also after work.” That the initial language
barriers soon fell away “and it’s
much easier to communicate with confidence,”
is naturally another welcome
outcome.
Our two apprentices were directly
involved in day-to-day business from the
start. “Stephan worked in the shipping
department for the first two weeks, and
then spent two weeks in sales, whereas
I started off in accounting and then
“Our English co-workers were
very kind to us and happy to
lend a helping hand
during and also after work.”
switched to shipping. We were given
some really interesting jobs to do that
taught us a great deal. We were responsible
for the drivers’ documentation and
even attended to
customers on the
phone,” Sebastian
Schneider reports.
Programme to
be continued
All in all, the whole thing could not have
turned out better. That’s the unanimous
conclusion of the apprentices, the programme
organisers and SCHÜTZ alike.
And that the programme will be continued
has long been decided, too. In
addition to our subsidiary in England,
the plants in Spain, Ireland, France, Holland
and Switzerland have all declared
themselves willing to participate in the
international training project. What’s
more, our apprentices from Selters will
also have the chance to gain an insight
into the workings of our Simbach unit.
Although everyone there speaks German,
flexibility and the ability to work
on one’s own initiative are certainly skills
interns can learn in Simbach.
It goes without saying, of course, that
in order to obtain a place on such a programme,
trainees must satisfy certain
practical and linguistic criteria. A period
abroad should therefore not take place
right at the beginning of an apprenticeship,
but after at least one year of training
so that participants have a certain
level of experience on which to build.
SCHÜTZ FRANCE:
Award
for Florian Marchand
The Apprentice Award 2010 in the category Technology bestowed
by the Chamber of Industry and Commerce of Essonne, France,
went to our apprentice Florian Marchand.
Florian Marchand joined Schütz France in 2006 as an apprentice studying for a
vocational baccalaureate diploma in automated production control technology.
Two years later and still an apprentice, he passed his exams to become a qualified
engineering technician. He earned top marks for his diploma thesis titled
“Reducing the Volume of Scrap Produced in the Extrusion Blow-moulding
Process and Optimising the Production Line” and also impressed the Chamber
jury, which rewarded his terrific result with a certificate and a cash prize.
These were presented to him at a ceremony on 26 November 2010, attended
by a representative of the Culture Ministry and the district administrator as
guests of honour.
Florian is now continuing his training, alternating between practical work at
Schütz France and his studies, with the intention of obtaining a degree in
industrial management and logistics next year.
Congratulations to Florian on his excellent achievement.
We wish him every success in his continued training!
Tribute to employees of 25 and 40 years:
Anniversary Celebration
Defied Weather Gods
Even freak weather failed to spoil the occasion. Even though the
Westerwald region was hit by probably the heaviest snowfalls
in a very long time on 16 December last year, nearly all of the
around 70 invited guests actually managed to make their way to
the traditional celebration held each year at our head office to
honour those employees who have been with the company for a
milestone number of years.
The exhibition room was festively decked out for the celebrations
and the altogether eleven guests of honour, some 45
former employees along with the management, works council
and representatives of the human resources department were
welcomed with an aperitif.
According to a long-standing tradition, company owner
Udo Schütz took the opportunity at this latest anniversary
celebration to say a personal word of welcome. He thanked
the guests of honour especially for their loyalty to our company,
seven of whom have been with SCHÜTZ for 25 years
and four for an impressive 40 years. In this day and age, such
loyalty has long ceased to be the norm and it certainly speaks
for our family enterprise.
Party continued well into the evening
After his speech, Mr Schütz shared some interesting items
of company news with the guests before proceeding to the
honours ceremony, during which personal congratulations
accompanied the presentation of anniversary certificates.
The official part of the evening was followed by dinner and
a cosy get-together with good conversation and everyone in
excellent spirits, regaling each other with reminiscences.
The party ended as it had begun earlier that evening: with vast
amounts of snow – not that this troubled our guests, all of
whom arrived home safely and in the best of spirits.
Flood disaster in northeastern Australia:
SCHÜTZ IBCs
Do Their Bit
for the Flood Victims
Early this year, floods devastated the state of Queensland, northeastern
Australia. The Lockyer Valley region and the city of
Brisbane, Australia’s third-largest city and Queensland’s capital,
were among the regions worst hit by the disaster. In Brisbane, a
total of 90,000 buildings were reported flooded, and the number
of deaths is estimated at 30. Some 100,000 households were
without electricity for weeks.
The Brisbane branch of our Australian
subsidiary, SCHÜTZ DSL, was quick to
respond to the region’s urgent need
for drinking water, immediately donating
a number of new IBCs to the relief
initiative Operation Angel. These were
needed to store clean water after flooding
had left extensive areas of the state
without sufficient clean drinking water.
Thanks to the SCHÜTZ IBCs, Operation
Angel was able to ensure vital supplies
of water for the flood victims, most of
whom were located in remote areas.
The Queensland floods are regarded as
the biggest natural disaster Australia has
seen for 40 years. Thanks to widespread
support and responses to appeals for
assistance, such as that provided by
SCHÜTZ DSL, many communities have
been able to recover and help their populations
to return to normal life.
6
We are very pleased that we were able
to help many thousands of people by
ensuring safe supplies of drinking water
with our own products.
Flexible, efficient, sustainable:
New Reconditioning Line
for SCHÜTZ Italia
“Tutto completo” at our site in Dello, northern Italy: SCHÜTZ Italia recently opened
a new reconditioning plant for IBCs, thus strategically expanding its performance
profile and once more upping its level of service.
In an effort to achieve nationwide
coverage of the market with sustainable
reconditioning services, SCHÜTZ
invested heavily in the new Italian plant,
which uses state-of-the-art technologies
to ensure the environmental sustainability
of all reconditioning and water treatment
processes.
“In line with our ecological approach, we
use active water filters and a closed-loop
system to purify all process water on site,”
explains Gianluigi Gualandris, General
Manager of SCHÜTZ Italia. “The recyclate
produced in the elaborate recycling
process is also used entirely in our own
production units,” he adds. “It finds its
way back into the IBCs as raw material
for new components – for example,
plastic pallets and corner protectors.”
Not only does the efficiency of the new
reconditioning plant help our Italian subsidiary
to increase its recycling capacities
for our used transport containers, it also
brings with it ecological and economic
advantages that reflect our sustainable
corporate philosophy. With the SCHÜTZ
TICKET, we have created a service for
our customers that can help them to cut
costs and carbon dioxide emissions in
their supply chain on a long-term basis.
SCHÜTZ guarantees the efficient collection
and reconditioning of used IBCs at
over 30 reconditioning sites worldwide.
In Italy, too, using the service is remarkably
simple and convenient. An efficient
logistics system guarantees nationwide
collection of even very small quantities –
outside urban centres, too. Requesting
an IBC collection is a simple process.
Users can submit a SCHÜTZ TICKET
7
SERVICE request form online, by fax or
by e-mail, or simply pick up the phone
to ensure the prompt and environmentally
sound collection and recycling of
their used IBCs.
The bottom line is that SCHÜTZ Italia
is now even more flexible, efficient
and service-oriented than ever –
and greener, too.
Interpack is the most important trade fair for SCHÜTZ:
Find Out
What Makes the Market Tick
It’s just three short years since the international packaging scene
got together last time in Düsseldorf for its most important trade
fair. Interpack will be opening its doors once again this year from
12 to 18 May.
RELIABLE
SUSTAINABLE
INNOVATIVE
Over the decades, the fair has proved to be the most important
one in the world for us, as one of the leading manufacturers
of industrial transport packaging. We presented our packaging
programme there for the first time, on a much smaller stand,
back in 1975. A great deal has changed since those days – and
not just the size of the stand, which today covers 500 square
metres on two levels (Hall 10 | Booth D 22). SCHÜTZ has grown
into an international enterprise with 30 sites around the world
and a diverse product portfolio.
One thing hasn’t changed, though, and that’s the fact that to
this day we have remained true to ourselves and our customers
with our stand at Interpack – as a source of innovative inspiration
to the markets, with our presentation of an array of
new and advanced IBC (intermediate bulk container) models,
and plastic and steel drums, not to mention services, first and
foremost the SCHÜTZ TICKET SERVICE. Several of our staff
travel in from all over the world to offer our international
customers information and advice at the stand. Having moved
and exciting developments on the industrial packaging market,
we can offer our guests a first-hand insight into present and
future trends.
In Düsseldorf, we want to join you in discovering what really
makes the packaging market tick, and here we place special
emphasis on aspects such as delivery reliability, conversation
of resources, carbon footprint, supply chain optimisation and
worldwide services.
See you in Düsseldorf…!
Impression of Interpack 2008.
Head of Technical Customer Service speaks at interpack:
Spotlight on
Nanotechnology
In many industries, nanotechnology is still regarded merely as
a technology for the future that is still very much shrouded in
mystery. Yet we already encounter products that exploit the
properties of innovative materials more and more frequently in
our daily lives today.
SCHÜTZ, too, recognised nanotechnology’s potential early
on. The latest example of this is the threaded flange with
moulded earth cable, which we developed
with the aid of carbon nanotubes
and which paves the way for
more flexible valve solutions for IBCs
used in areas at risk of explosion.
This and previous developments not
only reflect the mechanical characteristics,
but also and especially the electrical
conductivity of nanomaterials.
In the industrial packaging segment,
we are the first producer ever to use
nanotechnology in our series production.
Research Ministry hosts event
Small wonder, then, that Thilo Klein, head of our Technical
Customer Service unit, is very much in demand as a speaker
at this year’s interpack trade fair in Düsseldorf from 12 to
18 May. At a workshop titled “Industry Dialogue Nanopackaging
– Nanotechnologies and New Materials for the
Packaging Industry”, he will be outlining the benefits and
possibilities this forward-looking technology holds for packaging
producers.
The one-day event at the Congress Center on Düsseldorf’s
exhibition site is being hosted by Germany’s Federal Ministry
of Education and Research. The goal is
to promote the transfer of nano-technological
developments to practical
applications in industry. In addition to
this, the Ministry wishes to improve
networking between the materials and
nanotechnology scene and the packaging
industry.
Places can be reserved for the lecture
on the Ministry’s website until 6 May
Development of Asia Pacific markets continues:
Six layers
for Down Under
Our activities in Australia reached a new climax last November
when we introduced Security-Layer Technology at the production
site of our subsidiary SCHÜTZ DSL in Melbourne. We are now the
first and only company in the region capable of producing IBCs
with walls of up to six layers.
Security-Layer Technology is an extrusion blow-moulding technique
in which up to six different materials can be processed
simultaneously. This technology made it possible for the first
time to produce IBCs with a built-in EVOH barrier that are
not only suitable for use in the food industry, but also open
up potential new fields of application in agriculture and the
chemical industry. One such application is the substitution of
stainless steel containers even in areas exposed to the risk of
explosion.
SCHÜTZ DSL invited a host of customers and industry representatives
from the Asia Pacific region to the official opening
of its new extrusion blow-moulding plant. During a guided
tour of the factory, the guests had a chance to witness the
performance and the quality produced by the new heart of
the plant.
Vote of thanks for the great interest
expressed by customers
SCHÜTZ CEO Roland Strassburger and Steve Johnston,
Managing Director of SCHÜTZ DSL, then welcomed the guests
to the official part of the ceremony, which was held in an
elaborately decorated marquee. One entire wall featuring an
integrated bar and consisting of illuminated IBCs created a
festive atmosphere. In his speech, DSL founder Steve Johnston
took the opportunity to express his gratitude, especially to his
customers. Their great interest in and demand for SCHÜTZ DSL
products and services had contributed much to the company’s
successful development and had ultimately sparked the latest
addition to its portfolio, he said. Australia’s hugely popular
singer Kate Ceberano provided the musical high point of the
event.
Success story began 10 years ago
with a licensing agreement
The new plant in Laverton North, Melbourne, is the result of
the consistent and successful development of the IBC market
in Australia. The collaboration between SCHÜTZ and DSL,
from the outset already one of the leading packaging and
reconditioning companies in Australia, began a decade ago
with the signing of a licensing agreement for the production
and distribution of IBCs.
Its alliance with the major production and service partner soon
grew and brought DSL leadership of the IBC market in Australia.
SCHÜTZ’s majority takeover of DSL in 2006 resulted in the
merger of the two partners to form our current subsidiary
SCHÜTZ DSL. Today, SCHÜTZ DSL has built up extensive
coverage of the Australian market, with production plants in
Melbourne, Perth and Brisbane, as well as sales offices both
in Sydney, Australia, and also in New Zealand. SCHÜTZ DSL
opened a new production site in the same year in Nilai, near
Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia, which now satisfies the rapidly
growing demand for IBCs in South-East Asia. The company
also operates from various sales offices in Indonesia, Thailand
and Singapore.
It goes without saying, of course, that all of our Australian
subsidiary’s sites are included in our SCHÜTZ TICKET SYSTEM
retrieval and reconditioning network. The reconditioning of
drums is as much a part of the portfolio as our tracking service
for IBCs and drums.
Starting This Year
About two years ago, the vibration test for IBCs was included in
models since the beginning of this year.
This is why including the vibration test
our IBCs is purely a formality.
The test involves the test IBC being filled
to at least 98 per cent capacity with
water. The entire container is then subjected
to tensile and shearing forces for
the space of an hour in an attempt to
simulate real transport conditions. The
results achieved on the vibration table
were verified early on by real tests in
transit. Today we know that even more
complex transport situations lead to
similar results.
In a letter, the Federal Institute for Materials
Research and Testing (BAM) had
announced that it would automatically
withdraw its accreditation of IBC models
that had not passed the vibration test by
the end of 2010.
Even when the new regulation was
announced, it certainly didn’t cause
SCHÜTZ any sleepless nights because
what is now new territory in Europe is
something we’ve been practising for
years. That’s because the vibration test
has been an integral element of quality
assurance and product development at
SCHÜTZ ever since the 1990s.
Voluntary proof of quality is a
SCHÜTZ tradition
When we were developing the IBC, we
soon recognised the need for dynamic
transport simulation. Since this vibration
test was a traditional element of type
approval testing, we adopted it for ourselves
and integrated the vibration test
into the development of the IBC.
What this means is that SCHÜTZ has
long provided voluntary proof of quality
far beyond that legally required.
It is worth mentioning, however, that
when the test was included in the regulations,
some of its criteria stepped up
to become more rigorous than those
in the existing US legislation. Whereas
here only a fractured cage or leakage
would originally have led to a fail, today
the entire structure, right down to an
individual welded joint or screw, is under
scrutiny.
For SCHÜTZ, the vibration test will
remain an important element in the
further development of the IBC since it is
the only way to test structural modifications
in a minimum of time without the
need for lengthy transport experiments.
And this guarantees our customers the
tried and trusted SCHÜTZ quality.
Even if the new regulation has been a
part of our day-to-day activities for a
very long time, we are convinced that
it will ultimately have a beneficial effect
on the quality of products throughout
the industry.
Reliability, quality and an excellent planning service – these are the
three factors on which the success of SCHÜTZ ENERGY SYSTEMS
is founded. The company’s recipe for success is best illustrated
by its co-operation of many years with Flach, a building services
specialist based in Schweich. Flach has been installing state-ofthe-art
heating systems on large and small building sites for
many years and relies on know-how from SCHÜTZ in the Westerwald,
especially for industrial contracts – such as the equipping
of large, reputable car dealerships. Sometimes, the duo even
keeps the cars on show there from getting cold feet – erm, sorry –
tyres… particularly luxury models, such as Porsches!
Flach – a company based in Schweich
with a long tradition in building services
engineering and a professional team
of qualified specialists who know their
trade inside out – has been in business
for 32 years. In addition to advising
clients and installing modern bathrooms,
the company’s 50 employees also
install innovative heating technology in
commercial and private properties.
For the latter, the experienced experts
from Germany’s Middle Mosel region
favour heating systems from SCHÜTZ.
The two managing directors, Karl Spieles
and Günter Spaeder, are especially
proud of the contract they won with
one major German car retailer, the
Koblenz-based Löhr-group, to install
heating systems at its new dealerships
(Porsche, Lexus, Audi, VW and Toyota).
13
As a result, over the past few years
Flach has installed the modern SCHÜTZ
underfloor heating system on an area
totalling more than 4,000 square metres
in a variety of locations, including Mainz,
Trier and Neuwied.
Cosy warmth for showrooms
The industrial underfloor heating system,
consisting of PE-Xa system heating pipes
(20 x 2 millimetres), stainless steel manifolds,
clip tracks and control technology,
meets the special requirements of large
spaces. The mild radiation warmth emitted
by underfloor heating is ideal for
high-ceilinged showrooms with large
window fronts. The system maintains a
consistently comfortable room temperature
by responding quickly and constantly
to seasonal fluctuations. The entire
heating system also has some excellent
technical energy-saving features.
Last but not least – because installation
time also costs money – there’s
the speed and simplicity with which the
entire system can be installed. First, a
layer of special fibre-reinforced concrete
is poured over the PE-Xa pipes,
then it’s time for the top material layer.
Immediately after this last stage in the
process has been completed, both floor
and underfloor heating system are fully
functional.
A heating system that’s also a
pleasure to install
The new Porsche centre in Aschaffenburg
is currently being fitted with a SCHÜTZ
underfloor heating system. Once completed,
the installation of more than
10,500 metres of PE-Xa pipes will have
taken just one hundred hours to install.
This fantastic achievement is made
possible by the reliable combination
of punctual delivery, high-quality
material and efficient planning service
before and during the building phase –
a professional job that not only pays off
but also makes everyone happy. The
success of the project can be attributed
in no small measure to reliable partner
SCHÜTZ ENERGY SYSTEMS.
Honeycomb structures
in modern boat building
Since the early 80s sailing yachts named CONTAINER have been
constantly amongst the most successful boats in Grand Prix racing,
culminating in winning the Admiral’s Cup with the German team
in 1993 of the south coast of England.
After a 15-year break and campaigning
an STP65 Mini Maxi in 2009 and 2010,
SCHÜTZ will be back with a brand-new
CONTAINER (TP52 model) in 2011. The
boat is currently under construction at
Green Marine in Lymington, UK.
As a pioneer in the use of Nomex ®
honeycombs in high-tech boat building,
SCHÜTZ is constantly on the lookout for
new developments in terms of materials,
applications and tooling.
Pre-formed honeycomb parts in
boat building
Peter Krass, aircraft engineer and head
of SCHÜTZ’ R&D Composites, gives a
brief insight into the history and latest
developments of honeycomb applications
in yacht construction:
Since 1982, the first year of boat-building
activities at SCHÜTZ, racing boats
have changed drastically. In those days
the boats’ design was based upon the
RORC / I.O.R. racing rules which aimed
to optimise the boats’ handicap rating
not just in terms of speed and performance,
but also in terms of seaworthiness.
15
Typical here was the goblet-shaped hull
of those early displacement boats with
their theoretical hull speed of about
2,43/√waterline length in knots that
were the measure of all things. Hoist
any sail in the world, it wouldn’t make
the boat any faster, at most, the stern
and bow waves would get higher. Just
riding the waves could provide surfing
conditions.
Over-expanded
honeycombs
are used in the
bow end of the hull.
Preformed honeycomb section for the new CONTAINER.
Nowadays regatta boats are designed
for speed. Hulls are now flat-bottomed,
keels have knife-shape fins with a lead
bulb, and wetted surfaces are minimised,
allowing the boats to surf, no longer
limited by the theoretical hull speed. It’s
just about how much of the true wind
speed can be transformed into boat
speed at various angles.
As a result, the boats are two to three
times faster today than they were
30 years ago. This brings new challenges
for designers and boat-builders, the loads
caused by boat speed increase rapidly,
creating the need for new stronger materials
which unfortunately present problems
in adapting to hull shapes during
construction. This also applies to the
honeycomb parts used in many sports
applications in order to ensure competitiveness.
While honeycombs with a density
of 64 kg/m³ were originally built in
the hull, today parts with a density of
96 kg/m³ are used. Today’s hull forms
complicate the use of the heavier honeycomb
material. The radius of the transition
area between the flat hull structure
and the boat’s side is relatively small,
certainly no longer goblet-shaped. The
bow should ideally be sharp as a knife.
The use of female moulds means that it
is no longer possible to put and keep
any core material in place by means
of nets or wires. The pre-formed honeycomb
parts that we have been producing
for some time now provide the
solution to this problem. At the bow
end of the hull, there’s no alternative to
an over-expanded honeycomb structure,
which then runs into a full laminate section
at the bow. The sections are also
relatively small in this area and the loads
less critical.
The next section, which normally runs
from the safety bulkhead to the first
main rib, is where the highest loads
occur. The ribs are spaced approximately
2.5 metres apart.
Honeycomb parts with a cell width of
4.8 millimetres and over-expanded by
20 per cent are used here, since only
this assures the necessary compromise
between formability and structural
resistance. Most important for boatbuilding
applications is a constant curving
of any pre-formed core material.
SCHÜTZ has developed a special curing
oven for the thermoforming of honeycomb
panels. It is also important that
the forming tools should be air-permeable
to allow the heat to penetrate the
honeycomb quickly and evenly.
Honeycombs with partially hardened
phenolic resin are an advantage where
complicated parts are required. This
greatly facilitates the pre-forming process,
and the part is then cured at 220°
Celsius. These parts are not only found
in boat building, however; at AIRBUS,
the radome, the landing gear doors,
wing and tail-fin tips and many other
parts are all built using a similar technology.
