Bumble and Bumble Style H A I R C A R E This season’s catwalk hairstyles are hitting the high street. JOCELYN BAILEY checks out what’s going to be hot – files and what products you can recommend to get the look BRAIDS Plaits and braids – sometimes high on the head, sometimes low and to the side – appeared at loads of spring/summer fashion shows, including Emanuel Ungaro, Roberto Cavalli, Lacoste, Peter Som and Nathan Jenden. WHAT THE EXPERTS SAY: Aaron Blondell of John Carne Hairdressing says: “Distressed bohemian braids worn loosely over one shoulder are key”. What’s more: braids suit all hair types, Toni&Guy Straight & Shine Smoothing Balm is lightweight and can be used on either damp or dry hair to create a sleek finish. Perfect for keeping plaits in place, it also boasts an antihumidity agent to combat frizz, while smoothing and sealing cuticles. from poker-straight to curly and frizzprone, so long as the hair is long enough. GETTING THE LOOK: Tell customers to start with a lightweight styling cream to add control, then follow by rough-drying with the fingers and sprinkling mattifying powder through the lengths. They should start braiding from the mid-lengths, advises Richard Thompson, international creative director of Mahogany Hairdressing. “Plait loosely, getting tighter towards the ends.” PRODUCT HELP: Andrew Barton Gloss Boss Defrizz Shine Serum and Toni&Guy Straight & Shine Smoothing Balm both help de-frizz and prepare hair for plaiting, while Lee Stafford Matt Stylee Matt Fat Powder provides a fashionably matt texture. For heat styling, Andrew Collinge Super Slim Digital Straighteners feature tourmaline-ceramic plates for ultra-sleek plaits, or the Remington Genius has longer-length plates for speedier straightening. UPDOS 2010’s updos are looser than last year’s sleeker, polished styles. These more relaxed versions of twists, wraps, buns and rolls featured at Zac Posen, Vera Wang, Erdem, Malandrino and Felipe Oliveira Baptista. WHAT THE EXPERTS SAY: Charles Worthington favours the east-meets-west kami knot (kami is Japanese for hair), which is created from a low ponytail that is twisted and tied into a knot. His technique is to apply liberal amounts of salt spray to add guts and texture to over-soft clean hair, before blasting dry, creating a low ponytail and splitting it in two in order to twist and tie each half into a knotted bun-shape. GETTING THE LOOK: Denise McAdam says buns work best with unwashed hair, but it’s possible to ‘fake’ it with plenty of product – especially salt sprays. Sabrina Michals of Bumble and Bumble says: “To create a natural texture and enhance natural wave before building an updo, apply thickening hairspray to damp hair and rough blowdry with your fingers.” PRODUCT HELP: Charles Worthington Front Row Rough & Tousled Salt Spray adds guts and grip to over-soft hair, or Tresemmé 24 Hour Body Sculpting Spray Gel is a superb multipurpose volumising and styling spray that even resists humidity. H A I R C A R E PONYTAILS Bumble and Bumble From high with lots of backcombing over the head, to down low and sleek, ponytails were all over the catwalks again this year, including at YSL, Loewe, Bruno Pieters and Monique Lhuillier. WHAT THE EXPERTS SAY: The newest way to wear ponytails is with volume on top, so it’s time for customers to brush up on their backcombing skills. Laurent Philippon, Bumble and Bumble editorial stylist, commented: “Height at the top of the head is a flattering way to boost a style. People often make the mistake of not backcombing a large enough cross section of hair. For extra volume at the top of the pony, I backcombed all the way from the front to the pony itself.” GETTING THE LOOK: Neil Moodie, who has also worked with Bumble and Bumble, suggests: “To avoid any lumps in the back of a ponytail, lean your head as far back as you can when starting the style. Place the palm of your free hand on the back of your head to hold hairs in place, then sweep the rest into the pony.” PRODUCT HELP: Tommyguns Miraculous Volumising Thickening Styling Mousse and Toni&Guy Boost-It Mousse both add body and heat defence during drying. Afterwards, the Tangle Teezer may be an odd shape, but it’s brilliant for backcombing; Mark Hill De-Frizz Texturising Polish controls strays and adds a slept-in texture to the tail itself; while Lee Stafford Shine Head Spray Shine adds lots of gloss instead for a perfect pony finish. Toni&Guy Boost-It Mousse is part of a line inspired by catwalk trends. Giving hair va va voom volume and lift at the roots, it’s ideal for adding height to the head, while also providing texture and definition through the lengths. Add to that its flexible hold to control flyaways and it’s a hair hero for this style. BEACH HAIR Toni&Guy This year’s laidback surfer chic is less about mess and more about side-swept, rough-dried volume and texture, so it suits shorter and mid-length hair as well as long locks. It was seen at D&G, Prada, Guy Laroche, Max Mara, Alexander Wang and Diane Von Furstenberg. WHAT THE EXPERTS SAY: Hair with lots of natural texture and movement merely needs surf spray and careful scrunchdrying. For added waves, use rollers first – or, as a nifty alternative, Laurent Philippon suggests braiding and flat-ironing to seal in the crinkles, before releasing and teasing them into wavy effects. The smaller and tighter each braid, the tighter the waves will be. Tresemmé Philips Salon Dry Hush features a diffuser to enhance volume for that effortless beach babe vibe. It also boasts ion breeze conditioning technology for frizzfree, shiny hair, as well as six flexible speed and temperature settings, plus a cool shot to set styles. Said to be the quietest dryer on the market, the other bonus is it’ll blast her hair, not ears! GETTING THE LOOK: For hair with natural movement, Angelo Seminara, international creative director at Trevor Sorbie, recommends: “Simply apply surf spray to sections of dry hair and massage in gently, then tip the head upside down and scrunch.” Schwarzkopf Professional ambassador Aaron Blondell, from John Carne Hairdressing, suggests preparing the roots to mid-lengths with mousse instead. “And for dead straight hair, I would suggest using a diffuser,” he adds. “Once dry, gently spray with a volumising hairspray for that sexy, bed-head finish.” PRODUCT HELP: Trevor Sorbie Professional Beautiful Curls Beach Hair and Tommyguns Clever Curls & Waves Texture Spray both create fabulous Giselestyle waves; Denman ThermoCeramic Rollers add curl and movement to poker-straight hair; and Tresemmé Philips Salon Dry Hush provides 2000W of fast drying, complete with hair-caring ionic technology.
