S K I N C A R E SKINCARE made simple Skincare has never been more complicated, with separate products for day, night, eyes and lips, not to mention serums and wrinkle-fillers. But according to many experts, we simply don’t need them all, says JOCELYN BAILEY. So the next time a confused, budget-restricted customer asks what’s really necessary, here’s how to streamline her regime… NOW SELLING Trilogy Ultra Hydrating Cream Perfect for fans of natural skincare, this New Zealand-born cream blends nutrient-rich active manuka honey with soothing lavender to help nourish, heal and protect skin. Certified organic rosehip oil and evening primrose oil, which are rich in omegas 3 and 6, are also harnessed to help restore elasticity, lock in moisture and promote healthy skin rejuvenation, making the cream ideal for dry, dehydrated and mature complexions. CLEANSING Effective cleansing is fundamental to a good skincare regime, though not all cleansers were created equal. Some work better than others – but a bigger problem is that not everyone massages them in properly, and this makes them less effective, leading to clogged pores, blackheads and spots. ■ CLEANSING MILKS, CREAMS AND OILS – When massaged in thoroughly, their oil/fat content ‘sticks’ to make-up and grime particles, making them easy to wipe or wash away. However, they may need repeated application and not everyone has enough patience or energy, especially at night. Worth recommending: Origins Clean Energy Gentle Cleansing Oil; Pond’s Cold Cream; Simple Kind To Skin Purifying Cleansing Lotion; Tesco Skin Wisdom Daily Care Gentle Cleansing Milk. ■ WASH-OFF CLEANSERS – There’s nothing more satisfying than a good sudsing that leaves the skin feeling refreshed as well as clean. Worth recommending: Bourjois Foaming Cleansing Cream; Dead Sea Spa Magik Black Mud Soap; Olay Regenerist Precision Cleansing Cloths; Freederm Sensitive Facial Wash. ■ GADGETS: If your customer is too rushed to massage in her cleanser properly, there are now some products that do the work for her. Worth recommending: The Neutrogena Wave features a foam-infused, velcro-attached sponge on a battery-powered unit that vibrates gently against the skin, effectively massaging grime out of pores in double-quick time. THE FUTURE: Gadgetry could well be the way forward for time-poor, technique-poor customers, especially after the introduction of the Clarisonic, the skincare equivalent of the Sonicare sonic toothbrush. But as most customers won’t want to spend nearly £150 on cleansing, vibro-massage products like the Wave are a more likely new trend. MOISTURISING Keeping skin supple and protected with moisturiser is the other crucial skincare step. But it doesn’t need to be complicated or pricey. In fact, the difference in results between a premium product and the thriftiest can be surprisingly subtle. Customers should simply choose their moisturiser according to their skin type, budget and personal preference in fragrance and texture. S K I N C A R E THE FUTURE: Futuristic gadgets may develop here too, particularly home-use laser therapy machines – but as they currently cost around £200 to £300, it’s more likely that simple mechanical products such as skin-massaging rollerballs, or pressure point massagers (like L’Oréal Paris Revitalift Pro Contouring System) will become more common. Anti-ageing supplements too could be thrown back into focus following the launch of Innéov Fermeté from L’Oréal and Nestlé, which is said to boast impressive results. ■ MOISTURISERS: A basic oil-water combination is all the skin needs to remain lubricated, supple and protected, although many complexions need richer products in winter, and lighter ones in summer (when they’ll also need sun protection in the form of SPF15 or higher). Worth recommending: Johnson’s 24hour Moisture Facial Moisturiser; SteamCream Multipurpose Cream; Origins Make A Difference Ultra-Rich Rejuvenating Cream; Trilogy Ultra Hydrating Cream. ■ ANTI-AGEING PROTECTION: The sun is the single biggest contributor to premature ageing, so the most crucial ingredient for daytime use is SPF15 – especially in summer, since it helps prevent future wrinkles. Worth recommending: Garnier Vital Restore Day SPF15; Tesco Derma Intensive+ SPF15 Day Cream; Avène Hydrance Optimale SPF20; Nivea Visage Q10 Plus Day Cream SPF15. ■ ANTI-WRINKLE: When it comes to fighting existing wrinkles and crepiness, the best ingredients to recommend include retinol or its cousin, retinyl palmitate, which features in the much-hyped Boots Protect & Perfect range. Other retinol derivatives feature in many products, while antioxidants (such as vitamins A, C and E, and green tea) also promise wrinkle-reversing results. Worth recommending: RoC Retin-Ox Wrinkle Correxion Daily Moisturiser; Simple Regeneration Age Resisting Day Cream SPF15; Vichy Aqualia Antioxidants Hydrating Fluid SPF15. Sudocrem Skin Care Cream It made its name as a nappy cream, but following its staggering popularity as a secret skincare saviour for grown-ups, Sudocrem Skin Care Cream has been launched for adults. It boasts the same water-repellent base as the nappy cream, which protects the skin from irritants. Designed to treat common skin problems, from sunburn to blemishes, Amanda Holden dubbed it her “beauty bargain for killing spots”. Mudd Facial Masks At 99p, it’s the definition of credit crunch luxury. Mudd Masks are designed to give the skin a deep clean, helping to draw out impurities and leave skin refreshed. The Original Mask is made from clay, which is rich in minerals that help to extract deeply embedded dirt and excess oils.
