C O S M E T I C S Rochas HIGH DEFINITION SKIN TVs around the country are going high def – and a knock-on trend has swiftly trickled into the beauty aisles. Introducing: ‘hyper real, high def skin’. That’s baby fresh, photo-ready, flawlessly smooth skin to you and me. Sounds impossible? Not with what you guys have on your shelves. On the catwalk It’s not about caking on the make-up – skin should look underdone but dewy, natural and perfect. A sheer, healthy glow was seen at Stella McCartney, with just a touch of blush. At Calvin Klein and Gucci, skin was glossed to perfection with an almost futuristic sheen. It was bare faced but seriously beautified, so those high def cameras couldn’t pick out a foundation tidemark if they tried. In-store Foundation is essential for high def skin at home. The key to getting it right is to choose a shade that matches the natural skin tone – which is made easier by a host of new products featuring clever colour ‘adapting’ technology. Revlon PhotoReady Makeup – With a broad range of shades, this is truly a next generation foundation. The formula actually adapts on the skin to changing light, so it gives a sort of airbrushed, soft focus effect from inside to outdoors or day to night. Absolute genius! e.l.f. Studio HighDefinition Powder – A loose powder that creates a soft focus effect on the skin. Little imperfections and uneven skin tone are blurred to obscurity – plus the powder is pretty much invisible, so great over any foundation. It’s a massive hit in the US, and I predict a riot in your aisles! Rimmel London Match Perfect Foundation – This adapts and mimics skin texture and tone for a super natural flawless look. NEW TEXTURES: THE ANTI-SHINE Spring/summer 2010 sees the unexpected arrival of texture flexibility. Matte or glossy are not the only options this season… On the catwalk Powder lips at Bottega Veneta and Dolce&Gabbana versus über gloss at Prada. There was even a top lip matte, bottom lip gloss version at Rochas – although this one is probably not practical for day to day wear! And it’s not just lips – nails got in on the action at Chanel. Plain, old school gloss just doesn’t cut it this season; it’s texture war! In-store From texture-changing finishing products to beyond matte nails, this season your shelves will be offering up enough to keep your customers occupied till next Christmas! OPI Suede Collection – Six classic OPI shades ‘suedified’. It’s SO much more than simple matte – they look and feel like suede. These really must be seen to be believed. Barry M Lip Paint in Palest Lavender – The perfect über matte shade, Barry M always delivers on-trend catwalk colours, and this season is no different. Powdery pastel lavender lips are where it’s at. MAC Lipgelée in Preppy – When it comes to lips, we’ve seen wet-look, shimmer, pearlescent, vinyl and glitter. But this is a whole new level – like shaking glitter onto glue in a pre-school picture! Smooth and non-sticky, yet giving a dramatic texture effect, this will fly off the shelves. At home – tips & tricks 1. Encourage wary customers to embrace the new wave of technological textures one step at a time. A dab of glitter gloss in the middle of the lips only will give a modern, wearable geisha look. 2. If customers are reluctant to swap their favourite nail shade for a new matte texture, get them to try the new Leighton Denny Double Up Duo in Make it Matter and Crystal Finish. They can choose either the matte effect or crystal shine topcoat to update their old polish. 3. Powdery lips must be a chap-free zone. There’s a fine line between flaky and matte. Suggest customers carry Carmex at all times! It also contains blue sapphire pigments for extra special luminosity! If that’s not high def profile picture worthy, I don’t know what is! Vichy Dermablend Foundation Cream Stick – Even women with blemishes or severe skin flaws can get a perfect complexion thanks to this new stick. Containing double the pigment level of a traditional foundation, it works as a concealer or allover foundation and promises long-lasting full coverage without the mask-like effect. At home – tips & tricks 1. A little tan goes a long way on camera. Recommend St Tropez Skin Illuminator Cream, which was developed for Marios Schwab’s S/S10 show. This cream gives skin an iridescent blue tone (trust me, that’s a good thing!) which makes skin look pearly and perfect. Subtle and effective! 2. Recommend a light base to get this look – even the most unblemished skin needs evening out and perfecting. Remember colour matching is vital, so send customers outside with a compact mirror to check their shade in the most natural light. 3. Don’t be afraid of layering make-up – just make sure customers aren’t piling it on in thick layers! Modern make-up is designed to work as part of a team, so recommend a base, plus a concealer, plus a powder to perfect skin tone. Tell shoppers to build up gradual, light layers and buff products into the skin with a brush, rather than letting them sit on top. It’ll last longer that way too.
