METHODIST CHURCH (www.brentknollmethodistchurch.com)
Minister Revd. Andrew Biggs
I’m writing this on a hot sunny day in June, a stark contrast to the downpours and the
spectacular thunderstorms we had earlier in the month (which I’ve got to say I thoroughly
enjoyed).
As Summer seems to have finally arrived, we will be holding our Summer coffee mornings
here at Brent Knoll Methodist Church on the first four Saturdays in August from 10.30am. A
warm welcome is guaranteed to all.
Sadly we will be saying goodbye to our own Rev Andrew Biggs in August. We would like to
say a big thank you to him for looking after us at Brent Knoll over the last five years and wish
both him and Julie a very happy time in their new post in Gloucestershire - they will both be
very much missed. Rev Margaret Trapp will be taking pastoral care of us for a year
following Andrew’s departure and we are very grateful to her for agreeing to take us on.
We wish you all a happy, relaxing Summer whether you are going away or enjoying a break
at home. God bless.
Rosemary Krull
Toddlers
We are all looking forward to our Summer Outing on Tuesday 15 th July to Animal
Farm in Berrow, which will also be the last day of term. We plan to meet in the farm
car park at 10.30am onwards – don’t forget to bring a picnic! The outing also marks
the retirement of Ruth Knott, who had the inspiration some twenty-six years ago to
set up our Toddler Group. Recently Ruth has been serving the teas and coffees for
us, which is a vital part of our mornings. Thank you Ruth for your dedication, love
and kindness - we will miss you SO much but you will always be welcome to pop in and see
us any Tuesday. Enjoy your retirement.
Toddlers now has a lovely bright, colourful picture of ‘Winnie-the-Pooh and friends’ which
has been kindly painted for us by Harriet Dickinson, who was once herself a member of the
toddler group. A huge thank you to Harriet - your painting is amazing.
We would like to wish all our toddlers, their families and carers a fabulous Summer - have
fun! Note for your diary: Autumn Term starts on 9 th September.
WHERE IN OUR VILLAGE
Each month the BKN will
have a small picture quiz –
no prizes, but I hope you
may enjoy guessing where
the object shown is located
within the Parish boundary.
Last month’s object, with a couple of birds
sitting on it (one in the centre and the other
beneath it), is the top of the bell tower at the
school.
This month’s object is looking a little the
worse for wear, but is something that many
people would have seen even if they were not from this village.
So where is it? The answer and another object will be shown next month.
At our May meeting Tim Lewis gave us a potted biography of the singers Flanders and
Swann. We all remembered the musical duo from their television appearances during
the 1960’s and 70’s. The talk was illustrated with amusing cartoons and was
interspersed with a number of their well-known humorous songs.
In July we will be holding our annual garden party. Once again Frances James has
invited us to use the lovely garden of Ivyclad Hall for this event. We hope the weather
will be as good as it was last year. As usual it should be a pleasant afternoon, so why
not bring family and friends along to enjoy it with us.
At our August meeting, we will be back at the Parish Hall and Angie Jones will give a
demonstration of drumming. She came to us a few years ago and it was a fun afternoon,
so we will look forward to seeing her again.
Next meetings – 16 th July – Ivyclad Hall – Garden Party
20 th August – Angie Jones - Drumming
We are a very friendly group and we welcome new members of all ages. We meet on
Brent Knoll House Histories
Andrews’s Tenement – 4
When the Settlement of 1811 was discussed two months ago, there was a reference to a
debt of £1,000 on which John Gould had defaulted. He sold land to repay £700, remortgaged
some land for £300 and gave his son Thomas a further piece of land which
James Poole, who gave the loan, agreed was not necessary to secure the £300. That was
on the 27 th March 1811. A few days later Thomas acquired a mortgage from James Poole
on the land he had been given. It was for £100 and the land was stated to be owned by
Thomas Gould and Gabriel Stone or Gabriel Stone in Trust for Thomas Gould. The property
specified (discussed in the May edition) was subject to a charge, noted as an annuity or
yearly rent, for £21 payable to John Gould of South Brent, father of Thomas Gould for and
during the term of his natural life. However, this was not an undue burden, for the will of
John Gould was dated the 4 th day of May 1811 and he died shortly after, on the 4 th June that
year.
Exactly why Thomas Gould required the mortgage is not stated, only that he had an
occasion to borrow and take up at interest the sum of £100. The property was demised to
James Poole for 500 years at a peppercorn rent at the Feast of St Michael the Archangel if
lawfully demanded, which would very unlikely. Of course, if the money was repaid the lease
would end.
On the 11 th October 1825, Thomas Gould wished to augment this sum with another £50.
James Poole could not conveniently lend the money, so a new lender had to be found. This
was Miss Patience Blackburrow of Towerhead House, Banwell. Patience was about 55
years of age at this time and the house she lived in is on East Street, the road to Sandford,
and on the edge of the village. It was originally built
around 1584 and there is a nice picture of it on the
Banwell History web
site (left). It was rebuilt
about 1820 (English
Heritage web site) or
1840 (Banwell History
web site) and looks like
this now (right). An
interesting feature is the
motto, originally over the
door, but now at the rear, which states, Wyn God Wyn All.
This was put on the original house by the then Bishop of Bath and Wells, Bishop Godwyn,
and can be seen as a play on his own name.
As Patience made her will in 1835 and died in 1842, it may
seem likely that the rebuilding was done by the person who
bought the site immediately after her death. The new
building, like our own St Michael’s House, still retained a
number of features which had been retained from the earlier
house. Amongst these is a curious door in the basement
which has 16 th and 17 th century door lintels above, but not
part of, the doors.
It is said that the name, Towerhead, has nothing to do with
towers, but derives from local words, Ture Broc, a nearby stream. Ture means Head and
Broc means Stream. This is translated as stream head house, although it would appear to
be Head (Stream) Head House!
Brent Knoll House Histories – Continued
Only seven years later, another mortgage transfer is completed. This time it is William Pople
of Cocklake who is lending the money. £150 goes to repay Patience Blackburrow, leaving
£80 extra for Thomas Gould. It is noted that Patience called in the principal and Thomas
Gould being unprovided applied to William Pople. Obviously William Pople was a
methodical man, so, on the reverse of the deed he notes the payments he gets from
Thomas Gould:
January 16 th 1833 Received of Thomas Gould the sum of £11..10s for one year’s Interest
due the 6 th March 1833. This is signed Wm Pople. So, in that year the Interest was paid
rather early. The following year it appears that £12..10s was paid on the 10 th March, but in
1835 it is back to £11..10s and is paid on January 8 th , though John Pople, as well as William
Pople signs that year and from then on. In fact, Wm Pople, was the father, who made his
will on the 17 th May 1832, presumably as he was suffering from ill health, and died on the 5 th
March 1836, suggesting that the two sons, William and John, acted on his behalf in receiving
the interest in 1835, but then acted as his beneficiaries from 1836 onwards. It was only five
days after his death in 1836 when it is paid, on the 10 th March, a little late; but that may be
due to the circumstances of his death. In 1837 the date of payment is 14 th February. Things
seem to be getting worse under the brothers, however, as in 1838 it is 30 th March, in 1839
the 10 th March and in 1840 as late as the 15 th September. A rally in 1841 achieves the
correct date, that is, the 6 th March, but back to slippage in 1842, the 23 rd July, and worse still
in 1843, when it is not paid until the 10 th January 1844.
A loose sheet which accompanies the deeds states: Mr Thomas Gould, I hereby Give you
Notice that I shall Quit and Deliver up to you all that Half an Acre of Land be the same more
or less lying and being in the Parish of South Brent in the County of Somerset on the 25 th
Day of March next when my year will end. Dated 29 th Day of September 1838. Wm Cox.
William Cox farmed around 80 acres, according to the 1851 census, so half an acre would
make little difference to him, unless it was land of a special nature; but the only half-acre
which Thomas Gould owned at the time of the 1842 Tithe Award was an orchard close by
his house. Was this the only part of his estate that Thomas Gould rented out? If not, why
this land particularly? Did the loss of income have any effect on the delay in paying interest?
Unfortunately these are questions that may no longer have an answer. John Page
The Enigma of Sir Edward Elgar.
On October 4 th at 7.30pm in the Parish Hall, Brent Knoll, Brian Freestone will be giving an
illustrated talk on the music of Sir Edward Elgar and on the extraordinary life of our nation’s
favourite composer. Elgar was a complicated, sensitive and enigmatic personality who
experienced many highs and lows in his life. Yet he was loved by his friends and
acquaintances and his music is still as popular today. We will hear of Elgar’s struggle for
recognition as a composer for the first forty years of his life and then of his marvellous
successes in the first decade of the twentieth century, which were to bring him a knighthood.
We will hear excerpts from several of his masterpieces including a short discussion of his
famous ‘Enigma’ Variations’, which describe some of his friends in musical terms
Without the support of his selfless wife, Alice who dedicated her whole life to him, he may
not have become the composer of the various inspired masterpieces that we love today.
When Alice died in 1919 Elgar was bereft and for the last fifteen years of his life he
composed little of note. We have so much to thank Alice for. To hear the particular Enigma
Variation describing Alice, shows how much the composer appreciated her quality and
selfless dedication.
Brian will be assisted by the computing expertise of John Page and the evening will be in a
similar vein to last year’s ‘An Evening with Herr Mozart’, but enigmatically different!
Tickets £5 from the Post Office or Ged Keele (gerard.keele@btinternet.com or 01278
cash bar, at the interval.
BRENT KNOLL VILLAGE
SCARECROW WEEKEND
27 th & 28 th September 2014
Brent Knoll Village Scarecrow Weekend – with your help let’s make this event a huge success!!!
Lastyearwehadanabsolutelyfantasticresponsefromthevillagewith61scarecrows.
Wewouldverymuchappreciateyoursupportandenthusiasmfortheeventagainthisyear.
A Scarecrow Trail is a fun, value for money family event which celebrates local creativity and
where the community can come together to enjoy the village and community spirit. You can get
involved either as a Scarecrow maker or come along and follow the trail. In a Scarecrow Trail,
members of the public and local businesses and groups make scarecrows and display them during
the weekend of the trail. The organisers provide a notice showing your scarecrow’s name and a
clue, which you display next to your scarecrow.
During the weekend of the Trail, the organisers will be selling “trail sheets” with details of a trail,
which can only be solved using the numbers on the labels displayed next to or on the scarecrows.
The trail sheets will be available from the Parish Hall from 10am – 4pm on both days of the event
where hot and cold refreshments will also be served. These trail sheets are returned with the
answer to the organisers at the Parish Hall. The organisers then put the trails sheet into a draw
for a cash prize. A map, showing where all the scarecrows are, will be available from the Parish
Hall from 10am – 4pm on both days of the event. Trail sheets will also be available from all
members of Girlguiding Brent Knoll and Brent Knoll Post Office.
Our theme this year is
“MUSIC AND SONGS”
It does not matter if you take that to mean a singer, musician, band, composer or character in the lyrics of
a pop song, piece of classical music, theme tune, children’s song - all are possible choices! You may want
to choose a favourite musical artist or band, or favourite song or tune. It’s up to you!!
With the possibility of winning over £125 in prizes (thanks to our kind local sponsors) as well as supporting
our local rainbow, brownie & guide groups, it’s a struggle to find a good reason not to take part in this
Scarecrow Trail.
And it’s FREE to enter!! So go on, together with your family or group, put your thinking caps on; trawl
through your CD/record collection, browse the internet, choose your character and send in your entry
form. Note: Entries must be returned to Jane Sinnott no later than Friday 5 th September 2014.
BRENT KNOLL FÊTE
Another really bright sunny day got this year’s Fête off to a great
start. Major John Harper opened the event for us, around thirty
years after his mother had done the same thing - probably the first
time that two members of the same family have opened the Fête in
Brent Knoll. There was an excellent crowd of people already on site (many from outside
the village) and others arrived as the afternoon progressed. An excellent array of stalls
both inside the hall and around the field meant there was much to do, including an
Inflatable Slide and Test-your-strength machine, plus many of our regular stalls and the
Guides did an excellent job serving cream teas in the hall. One of the highlights of the
day was a retrospective exhibition of paintings, drawings and sketches by Bruce
Wingate, who sadly died earlier this year, showing the excellence and wide range of his
artistic achievement, as well as a hint of his earlier career as a spitfire and meteor pilot
during WWII. Our thanks to Sally and Vicky for lending the art work and to Alan, Roy and
Jean for helping put it up.
During the afternoon, the Brent Knoll Primary School pupils danced round the maypole and
did a number of other excellent dances. They looked lovely in their outfits, with gorgeous
head-dresses for the girls, and they performed magnificently – this year attempting some
intricate maypole moves for the first time, which they achieved with great skill. As the
Chalice Morris Men were unable to be with us, we then had some children’s sports,
organised by Mark Bailey and what a grand job he did. It was also lovely seeing some of the
older children helping younger children to take part. As part of this event we had a Mons
Renarum trophy in three sections, for under 11 year olds, 11 to 18 inclusive and over 18s.
Prizes were given for the longest jump from a standing start. Amazingly the overall winning
jump came from a 10 year old (though it was also noticed that an octogenarian did pretty
well)! Each group winner was presented with a frog as their prize, of course.
Of course, Village Fêtes don’t just happen, so, on behalf of our committee, let me thank
those who organised and participated in the events mentioned above, those who ran
stalls, displays and games, those who helped out in the morning preparations and
evening clean up, those from around the village who contributed to the bottle stall and
the book stall, who bought raffle tickets and also gave us some useful bric-a-brac and to
all those who came along and helped to make it such a friendly afternoon. Financial
results were not complete at time of going to press, but the Parish Hall, though not doing
quite as well as last year, is still likely to have made a sum exceeding £2,500. That
money will be used to help pay off the mortgage on the new (Jubilee) meeting room at
the rear of the hall, which is now being well used and replete with an overhead digital
projector, screen and sound system. I also understand other stalls were reasonably
happy with their takings, which is excellent. Finally may I say a big thank-you to the
members of the Fête Committee, who have worked hard over many months to ensure
that everything went well on the day. John Page, Chairman Village Fête Committee
We had an extra visitor at our June meeting- a Peregrine Falcon!
He was brought by his owner, Tony Buller, who gave a fascinating, amusing
and informative talk about some Birds of Prey.
Tony keeps 3 birds, the Peregrine Falcon, a Harris Hawk aged 15 years called Hope, and a
female Goshawk who lives in his dining room!
Hawks only eat meat with fur, feathers and bones being regurgitated. Goshawks can fly rapidly
through trees in wooded areas and use their talons to catch their prey of birds and small
mammals which they crush with their feet to kill them.
Peregrines are swift and agile and fly high in open areas selecting their prey of pigeons and
small birds from above. They dive down to hit the prey in mid air then make a rapid turn and
catch the bird while still in the air using a notch in their beak to kill the prey by severing their
spinal column. This dive is called a’ stoop’ reaching speeds of up to 200mph. Peregrines are
feared by other birds and can be used to scare them away at airports to prevent these birds
flying into aircraft and damaging them.
They build their nests on cliff edges, church towers or even blocks of flats and lay 3-4 eggs.
Falconers (people who keep hawks), need certain equipment in order to take their birds out of
the aviary. The birds have identifying tags on all the time. Anklets go on each leg to which a
thin strap called a Jess is attached. A small swivel then joins the jesses to a single leash so that
the falconer can keep control of their bird while it is on a gloved hand or on a perch. A hood is
used so that the bird cannot see and get upset when out and about and not flying. Tony also
has a pair of joined tail feathers, which he adds to his bird’s tail. Attached is a small transmitter
so that he can find out the direction in which his bird is flying. Hawks are only flown to hunt for
food. Sometimes dogs are used to flush out smaller birds like ducks, grouse, mallards,
pheasant or partridge.
The Peregrine was calmly perched on Tony’s hand during the whole of his talk. Some of our
members took advantage of the offer to hold this beautiful bird. Then Tony warned that when
he took the bird’s hood off, it would stretch and flap his wings and even possibly relieve himself.
Tony then removed the hood and the Peregrine did exactly what Tony had said .... and that
explained the plastic sheet on the floor!!!.
Another easier grade 3 Sudoku this month! It’s the same level as last month’s. Pauline
Chadwick sent in a time of 3 minutes to solve it. Can anyone beat that over the Summer
months?
May’s record entry was actually 21 persons as I omitted Klaus Brenner who sent his in
early. Sorry Klaus! 18 persons solved last month’s Hard Sudoku! They were Ivor
Ainsworth, Klaus Brenner, Pauline Chadwick, Tim Cromwell, Mac Hares, Arndt
Hartmann, Holywell Nursing Home, Liz Ibrahim, Vicky Jones, Stephen Lawrence, Frankie
New, Chris Marsh, Peter Osborn, Margaret Rogers, John Spiers, Caroline Sturgess, Ted
Toon and Gordon Watson. Tim Cromwell won the ballot. Some said it was easier last
month but the level of difficulty was the same. I conclude that, with practice, you are all
getting better at it! It depends on getting the first number quickly. As a hint this month,
look at cell H4 first. Send answers to 48, Brent Street or david@flockman.com. Now
back in the UK after a successful business trip to Australia and America! David Filmer
Brent Knoll Weather Report – May 2014
Despite a promising start and a sunny spell in the middle, May’s weather
was dominated by overcast skies and rain - some of it heavy, and with
hail and thunder thrown in. The rainfall total was 96.4mm, about double
the May average, making this by far the wettest May recorded here.
Overcast skies provided a blanket at night, so there were no late frosts to
catch gardeners out, and the lowest temperature was 4.7°C. There were
no exceptional highs either, with a maximum of 23.3°C, so despite much
dismal weather the average temperature was 12.7°C – about what we
would expect for May. There were blustery winds on the 10 th , but during
the second half of May, there was very little wind to move the rain along – this
contributed to the high rainfall total.
May Day brought showers, but high pressure was building from the east and covered
the country by the 3 rd bringing warm if rather hazy sunshine during the day and a
couple of chilly nights - including that low of 4.7°C early on the 4 th . A queue of low
pressure systems had formed out in the Atlantic, though, and as the anticyclone
moved off to the continent on the 5 th , we saw a covering of cloud followed by rain.
During the following week it rained every day, and a lively depression on the 10 th
produced 10mm of rain and average wind speeds of 22kts gusting to 32.2kts - both
records for May.
High pressure began to build again, this time from the west, and by 15 th May the
country was once again covered by a high pressure system. The skies cleared and
the thermometer rose to 23.3°C on the 19 th , but it wasn’t to last and that evening a
thunderstorm marked the return of Atlantic lows once again.
These lows took a more southerly track than usual for this time of year, so we were
often near the centre of the systems, and their progress was slowed by persistent
high pressure over Russia. This meant there was plenty of time for the lows to unload
their rain on us, and little wind to move heavy showers along: from the 22 nd to the 24 th
we recorded 44mm of rain, which is about the average for the whole of May. Rainfall
was often heavy and localised – one night we recorded just 6.8mm, while Westonsuper-Mare
clocked up more than 20mm in a couple of hours. The rain continued
until the 29 th , and May ended with a couple of overcast but dry days.
The end of May is also the end of Spring, and this was the warmest Spring on record
here with an average temperature of 10.3°C – a contrast to last Spring’s record cold
(average of 7.5°C). Total Spring rainfall was 202.2mm which is well above average
but not quite a record – 2008 was wetter with 204.8mm. Because January, February
and now May have been so wet, our year-to-date rainfall total stands at 472.8mm –
about twice what we would expect for this time of year. The grass is growing well,
let’s hope we get a chance to cut it. Stephen Baggs; www.knollweather.co.uk
More Ramblings of a Rambler
Mother Nature has certainly got off to a gallop after a Spring
where she could hardly walk. The countryside is vibrant, every
shade of green and yet more, that have not been catalogued,
can be seen.
The footpaths are impassable unless a lesson from a survival
expert has been attended. In fact, anyone venturing out without
a jungle knife, a water bottle and a knowledge of where the North
Star is, should tie themselves to a ball of string and the other end to the property they
are leaving. I assure you this will not last; before we know it the Sun will be on its way
back to the Tropic of Capricorn accompanied by the migrating fauna. Along with the
abundance of grass, the fruit trees are covered in fruits. This in turn leads to an
active squirrel population that is feeding young and filling their larders. The
rambleress has an almond tree she has grown from an almond kernel and this is the
first year it has borne fruit, only to have it attract the squirrels from next door. The
squirrels are very brave as they have to negotiate a lawn where three sleeping dogs
lie in wait. Among the fruits yet to mature is the elder, the flower makes an excellent
presse, so get picking.
For those of you who regularly read my report, thank you both, I can tell you the
swallow chicks are out of the nest and flying, and I believe there is still time enough
for another brood to be reared.
Recently I witnessed a buzzard being mobbed by rooks as it was after a young rook
that could not fly. The buzzard flew off when it saw me but I expect it returned after I
had disappeared. Several sightings of roe deer have made me rub my eyes as their
colour at this time of year is that of a red deer.
