BUILDING COMMUNITY
In the last issue of Family Networker, we began our 25th
Anniversary celebration with memories from several of our original
founders. This spring, we focus on the beginnings of Family Network
from the perspectives of one of our first teachers and others involved
in the early years of the drop-in center.
One Teacher’s Reflections
Picture a basement room with a dark brown linoleum floor,
covered by a 10 x 12 foot rug, with a row of windows near the
ceiling. The room is divided in half by a bookcase stocked with
simple toys, stuffed animals, and blocks. On one side, a two year
old is building a tower of blocks. Next to him, a three year old
is feeding her toy bunny. On the other side of the bookcase are
two couches and a rocking chair. A young mother is rocking her
baby to sleep. Two other mothers are chatting with a white haired
woman in her 70s whose warm smile and welcoming manner feel
like comfortable family. As she listens and responds she is knitting
a cozy afghan.
This is a snapshot of Family Network’s beginnings. Martha Struve
Freeman always reminded friends that Family Network was born on
her birthday, opening its doors on January 3, 1983. Martha had
recently retired as the director of Highland Park Community Nursery
School, and she knew that moms with children too young for
preschool needed a place to go. Martha and the original teachers
- I among them - volunteered their time as the drop-in was offered
two mornings a week.
Before long, the one room program expanded to accommodate
a growing number of families. Toddlers and preschoolers were
separated into two rooms to suit their different needs, and a room
was set up where parents could be together when their children
were ready to play on their own with a teacher nearby. Several years
later, the Baby & Me Room was created so that mothers with babies
could spend time in their own room with an infant specialist. Board
members and parents worked together to renovate the basement
rooms which were generously provided by the Highland Park
Presbyterian Church.
Although Family Network has grown over the years to incorporate
Right From The Start and the After School Activity Program, we
continue to be responsive to the needs of our children and families
and our community. Today, the Family Network Parent/Child Center
is still a warm, welcoming place that feels like comfortable family,
just as it did when Martha Freeman sat with mothers and their
children in that first room in 1983!
Parents Remember
As soon as I moved to Highland Park, in April of 1983, I started
going to Family Network. I had been taking my three-year-old to
Family Focus in Evanston and was pregnant with our second child. I
was thrilled because this was a way to meet other mothers of small
children in Highland Park. Martha was a welcoming soul and the
program provided answers about child rearing.
A number of us had been so busy with our careers that we hadn’t
given much thought to what to do about being a mother. There
were deep discussions in the Mothers’ Room about careers. We felt
conflicted because we didn’t want to let those down who had made
it possible to get the education we needed for our careers. When
I was Board president in 1989, I wrote a column, “We all have to
make decisions.” I still see several friends I met at Family Network.
- Jean Meier, 1983-90
Janet Freund met me at Highland Park Hospital, where she had
started an infant-toddler program to help new mothers. Since I had
no family here, Janet suggested that I come to Family Network.
Martha was an angel and I got so much out of the program. I also
served as board president for three years starting in 1990.
- Chana Anderson, 1985-93
As a first socialization experience in a classroom setting Family
Network set the stage for successful, caring, confident future
students. My 20 and 22-year-old children are now independent,
responsible adults—thanks, in part, to this invaluable experience.
President’s Column
Family Network is now half way through its 25th year. Throughout
the past twenty-five years countless volunteers, employees and
donors have honored our founders and their original vision by
helping to strengthen and expand the invaluable services that Family
Network continues to provide to so many families in the community.
This past November, Family Network directly honored its founders
at our annual book review luncheon. I was especially honored to
meet the seven founders who were able to attend. We who have
benefited from the services of Family Network should thank them for
their vision, commitment, and dedication to making that seed of an
idea a reality that continues to grow and serve increasing numbers
of families twenty-five years later.
In further celebration of Family Network’s twenty-five years, the
2008 Spring Gala will be held on June 7th. Because of its previous
successes, we will again be doing a food and wine pairing. We will
honor Mayor Michael Belsky for his support of Family Network, both
as a member of Family Network’s Advisory Committee for over five
years and as Mayor of Highland Park. This year’s event will feature
expertly paired food and wine, as always, and will include a dessert
bar, live music, an ad book, and silent auction.
As we begin looking forward to our next twenty-five years, I want
to pause and say thank you, not only to our founders, who had an
incredible vision, but also to all of you who continue to strengthen
that vision through your many contributions. Lastly I wanted to
acknowledge the departures of Sonia Swanson and Phyllis Segal
from our Board. They both generously contributed many years of
valuable service to the Board by volunteering countless hours to
advancing the mission of Family Network. We wish them the best in
the future and thank them for all their assistance on behalf of the
Board and the children and families of Family Network.
— Kirsten Laurie, Co-President
Family Network Board of Directors
If you are excited about Family Network and our mission of
supporting and strengthening young children and families in our
community, consider joining our Board where many opportunities
The Family Network Board will be hosting an open house
for prospective Board members on Tuesday May 13th from
7-8:30 p.m. at the Lincolnshire Gourmet in Highland Park.
Complementary soft drinks and appetizers will be served. Please
LITTLE MISS SUNSHINE
Sabrina and Jack at FN’s annual parent-led fund-raiser at the Kohl
Children’s Museum. With a record-breaking attendance of 271
people, this year’s Box Office Bash raised almost $15,000 for the
Drop-In program - the most successful fund-raiser in the history of
Family Network’s Kohl event.
LINKING FAMILIES...
Family Network was a place to connect with other moms in the
trenches. I remember the passionate talks in the Parent Room about
topics like sleeping and breast feeding. It was also where I connected
with Jennifer Peters. She played the violin and piano and I played the
flute. When our children were ready to play without us, we would go
up to the church choir room to practice for concerts. We could be
very focused because our children were right downstairs.
- Cheryl Zavagno, 1989-95
Last week I had coffee with a dear friend. As we swapped stories
about shepherding our daughters through the murky waters of
college applications, we realized that, over the years, we'd gone
from commiserating over sleeping and toilet training to college
applications and financial aid. The core of our friendship was
formed at Family Network.
I donated the curtains that still adorn the rainbow room. I made
those curtains for my first baby, Rachel, in 1990, and every time I
come by Family Network, you can be sure I touch those curtains for
a moment.
I moved away in 1996, and when our son joined our family,
his big sister Malia said that she wished we could live back in
Chicago, because otherwise, David would never get to go to Family
"Neckwork". She was right, he never got to go. But I did, and every
day I plopped on that couch was valuable and dear.
- Anita Silvert,1992-95
Director’s Column
It’s been a wonderful year so far at Family Network. We started
things off with a record turn out for our Book Review luncheon
paying tribute to our founders. In January, we held our family
friendly Box Office Bash fund-raiser at the Kohl Children’s Museum
with another record turnout of 271 attendees. We are excited about
our upcoming annual spring fund-raiser celebrating our 25th
anniversary to be held on the evening of Saturday June 7th at the
Highland Park Community House. Highland Park Mayor Michael
Belsky will be honored as the recipient of the 2008 Martha Freeman
Friend of The Family Award. Please hold the date for this special
event to support our agency.
This year we have been celebrating our past and embracing our
future. We are excited about our updated logo that represents the
diversity of our agency and the expansion of our services to families
with older children. Family Network has always been a pioneering
agency by being responsive to the needs of our participants and
community. We continue to develop innovative programs to meet
their needs.
We couldn’t do it without you
We are extremely grateful to have the support of our advisory
Board members who commit so much of their time and energy
to make Family Network what it is today. We are also indebted
to our Advisory Committee and our volunteers for their numerous
contributions to our programs. We also thank the Highland Park
Presbyterian Church for providing our home in their beautiful facility
for 25 years. Lastly we would like to thank all of the wonderful
children and families that walk through our doors everyday. It’s a
privilege to serve you and learn from you.
5% Match Day
Does your family enjoy Whole Foods? If so
mark your calendars and make sure that
you and your friends shop at the Deerfield
Whole Foods on June 11th when they will generously be donating
5% of their sales to Family Network. Thank you Whole Foods for
supporting our agency!
Although we have received substantial media
coverage this year in the Chicago Tribune
and Highland Park News, Family Network
has always been a hidden jewel in the North
Shore. Once discovered, families regularly
tell us how they wish they had known about us sooner and how
grateful they are that we’re here. We know that word of mouth is
one of the more effective methods to let people know about our
agency. If you feel that Family Network holds a special place for
you and your family, please pass out our new referral cards, make a
phone call, write a letter to the editor, help spread the word.
RFTS Notes
Right From The Start (RFTS) proudly joins the celebration of the
25th year anniversary of our agency as we continue to present more
options to serve Latino families in the community.
Our newest program is a fitness and nutrition after-school
enrichment activity in collaboration with Oak Terrace School and
our Fiesta Fitness instructors Pam Phillips and Cristina Persico. This
new adventure started when moms with children older than 4 years
began transitioning out of our program and were upset about having
to give up all RFTS activities and groups. They asked, “When are
you going to organize activities for older children?” We thought this
was a great idea! In this way we can keep in touch with our alumni
and also involve older siblings of our current participants. It is nice
to be able to reach out to the whole family.
While discussing our options and resources, Pam Phillips expressed
an interest in working with school-aged children. I also knew that one
of my staff has a special talent for communicating with children, and
that she is very creative. By putting our heads together, we decided
to implement this project. Research has shown that the incidence of
4
Gabriela with her 5 food groups craft project
The Sewing Group
Conceived as a vocational experience, creative
outlet, and an opportunity to relieve the social
isolation encountered by RFTS participant moms,
the sewing group has undoubtedly succeeded.
Led by Audrey Rosenheim (of the Art Center
of Highland Park), participants recently devoted
many hours to embroidering cartoon figures on
pillows. Elizabeth Gonzalez, right, works on her
latest project.
Expanding Services To School- Aged Children
Volunteer aerobics instructor Cristina Persico (center) leads eager
Oak Terrace children in exercise.
obesity in Latino youth is a significant public health concern that
if left untreated can lead to diabetes or high blood pressure. This
preventive program addresses these issues by teaching children
about proper nutrition and diet while also providing students with
a fun-filled aerobic workout in the school gym. We started with a
pilot group for four weeks to see if it was successful….and it really
was! Both students and their parents have been very receptive to this
new after school program. We were expecting 24 children and 28
signed up. We had a lot of fun and the children did too.
We scheduled time for a healthy snack, 30 minutes of fitness, and
30 minutes to review a nutrition topic and make a craft related to
the topic to reinforce the idea. The fitness part was a combination of
work-out routines, games, Latin dancing and yoga. The energy and
happiness that these kids released was exhilarating. After the four
sessions we have decided to offer a spring session in April.
Special thanks to Mrs. Anderson, principal of Oak Terrace, for
being open and supportive to our idea, and to Cristina Persico and
Pam Phillips for their enthusiasm in working on this joint project. We
are also very grateful to Pam, who has generously supported this
project. We look forward to future collaborations with the district to
expand offerings to Latino children.
Notes From the
Parent/Child Center
Despite this incredibly long, cold winter, the drop-in center has
been warm and busy. A new mother (with a 7 week old infant) who
recently began coming to morning Drop-In told me, “I’m willing
to cope with the cold and snow, knowing that I will find a warm
welcome and a wonderful group of women at Family Network. I’m
so glad I found you!”
As Family Network celebrates its silver anniversary this year, I am
more than ever aware of the strong network of relationships which
have made it possible for our center to survive, grow and develop
over the past 25 years. In my ten years as Program Coordinator, I
have had the privilege of knowing many of our founders, and of
working closely with many dedicated Board members, teachers and
volunteers.
Sandy Incorvia, the very first drop-in teacher (whose reflections
grace the front page of this newsletter), is still very much involved as
a volunteer in our programs. Gerry Kriser, a former Board member,
has volunteered on Thursdays since the Dual Language Program
began. Another former Board member, Lois Kupritz, contributes her
empathy and expertise regularly as a speaker in the Parent Room.
Carol Brusslan has been a teacher in the Sunshine Room for 16
years, and often contributes her journalistic talents to the Family
Networker.
After her retirement as a preschool teacher, Helga Schrimmer
began volunteering in the drop-in, and now has been a Rainbow
Room teacher for over 10 years. Jane Glickman and Cathleen
Hamili, who first came to Family Network with their own small
children, are now drop-in staff members who bring a special
understanding to their work with families.
Several parents who first came to the Baby & Me Room with small
infants are now Board members, contributing their time and energy
to make it possible for another generation of families to benefit
from the Parent/Child Center. Others spread the word about our
programs and advocate for us in the community. Many thanks to all
of you for all you do to support Family Network, so we can continue
to support families for 25 more years!
I would like to particularly acknowledge and welcome three
wonderful new volunteers who have become an important part of
the morning drop-in program during the past year. Every Tuesday,
Lois Levy’s warm smile greets children and parents at the front desk.
On Dual Language Thursdays, Sallyan Windt and Holly Reinsdorf
bring their unique energy and talents to the Sunshine and Rainbow
Room children. Muchas gracias!
Finally, I want to thank FN alum and Board member Michelle
Holleman and graphic designer Mary Cary for their excellent work
on our new brochure. This long-awaited project was made possible
by the generous donations to Family Network in memory of Marisa
Ness, and we are very proud to be able to distribute the brochures
in the community. If you would like a copy of the new brochure,
they are available at the center or by contacting me anytime.
In the Fall 2007 issue of the Family Networker, we reported on
the development of the Community Family Center (CFC). Currently
a site for this facility in Southwest Highland Park is being considered
for lease by North Shore School District #112 (not donated as
was previously reported) and could possibly be voted on at their
meeting in April. To date, there have been two public open meetings
offered by the CFC regarding this particular location. It should be
ASAP Notes
Family Network’s 25th year, and the After School Activity Program’s
fourth, has been a busy one. Before winter break, both sites held
canned food drives. Each classroom made posters, and flyers were
sent out to ASAP families. Everyone did a great job! We were able
to deliver a mini-van full of canned goods and other non-perishable
food items to the Moraine Township Food Pantry.
The addition of a second classroom and extra staff at Wayne
Thomas has allowed for new, creative programming. On Fridays, the
classes are combined and divided into thirds. Each group attends
one of three workshops planned and presented by our staff. Groups
rotate so each group eventually attends each workshop. The children
have participated in Play-doh making, learning Chinese calligraphy,
a presentation on American Indians, yoga, group games, and team
building activities.
Our Indian Trail classroom has been busy as well. Our creative
staff has engaged the children in many projects, including making
butterfly and owl Mardi Gras masks from egg cartons and colorful
scratch art. unique “pinch pot” animals were crafted from clay,
painted and fired in a kiln, and children tried their hand at hand
print paintings. Active time in the gym has included lots of kick ball,
and, most recently, some spirited balloon relay races. There have
even been a few foam and yarn snowball fights in the classroom.
The eight full days we’ve had thus far have included celebrations
of National Popcorn Day, the anniversary of basketball, and Mardi
Gras. Thanks to the Trillium Foundation, the children have been
exposed to a variety of workshops presented by local artists from
urban Gateways. Most recently, Amy Lowe, a singer-songwriter,
worked with the kids to write their own song and make of collage
representing the main character in the song. John Knecht, a
percussionist, took the ASAP kids on a singing, drumming and
dancing “trip” to West Africa, Japan, the Middle East, Indian, Brazil
Educators of Tomorrow
Ricky & EOT member Jessica Faus work on reading skills.
Dress-up fun at Wayne Thomas.
and the u.S.
Staff and kids alike are looking forward to spring and getting
outside again. In the meantime, we continue to enjoy the imaginative
activities presented by the staff, with some free time and a little
homework on the side!
Family Network warmly welcomes the military families moving
to Fort Sheridan. Once the School Board accepted the proposed
plan, we began to investigate the most feasible location for the
Wayne Thomas ASAP classes for the 2008-2009 school year. We
appreciate the efforts of Dr. Hager, Maureen Deely, principal of
Wayne Thomas, and Sandy Anderson, principal of Oak Terrace.
unforeseen changes for District 112 could result in a move for either
ASAP site at any time, but we’re thrilled that we will continue to
have two ASAP classrooms in north Highland Park, either at Wayne
Thomas or at Oak Terrace.
We’re grateful to Superintendent Maureen Hager and District
112 for their steadfast support of our program by providing it with
a home in their schools.
— Bobbie Hinden, MEd, Program Director
The Educators of Tomorrow (EOT) is a Highland Park High School
club for students interested in working with children. For the third
consecutive year, this club has provided volunteers to help out in
our ASAP classrooms.
EOT members volunteer at both our Wayne Thomas and Indian
Trail sites. For as many as three days per week, most of them function
as aides, helping wherever they’re needed. The ASAP students look
forward to having them in the classrooms; homework is much more
fun with a high school student than it is with a teacher!!
Once a week, club presidents Lillian Prueher and Isabelle
Dienstag present a lesson on a foreign country. using maps and
pictures, Lillian and Isabelle talk about what makes each country
special: its culture, beliefs and landmarks. They encourage other
EOT members to introduce topics of their own choice to the ASAP
kids.
ASAP is eternally grateful to the volunteers for making time in
their busy schedules to spend an hour each week with us. We look
forward to a long-lasting relationship. Thank you to all of you!
