LIONS’ CLUBS SET SIGHTS ON EYE CARE EQUIPMENT
When Lion Glenn Connell (President, Lions’ Eye Care Niagara) and Lion
Allen Snider (First Vice District Governor, St. Davids & District Lions)
became aware of the great need for a specialized microscope that performs
cataract surgeries, they jumped into action.
Local Lions Clubs worked tirelessly and raised over $80,000! This hard work and
dedication was recognized by the Lions Club International Foundation (LCIF) who
believed in the cause and awarded a grant bringing the fundraising total to $148,000.
Thanks to the generosity of LCIF, Lions’ Eye Care Niagara and the St. Davids & District Lions Club, the
Ophthalmic Operating Microscope has arrived and is currently being used at the Ontario Street site of the
Niagara Health System.
This new microscope means exciting changes for Ophthalmology Services! It enables our eye surgeons to
perform high quality cataract surgery comfortably, safely and precisely with brilliant resolution and increased
depth of field. The clearer image means a decrease in surgical time allowing for a greater number of cataract
surgeries. Additionally, this new microscope will be less likely to malfunction and will therefore decrease
surgical delays or cancellations.
Lions around the world are united by a great spirit of giving and dedication to helping others. Lion
and Lioness Clubs from across Niagara have been generous supporters to our Hospital for many years. The
St. Catharines General Hospital Foundation is truly thankful for their continued support in ensuring we equip
our hospital with the most technologically advanced equipment possible.

the microscope which read “Generously Donated By: Lions Club International
Foundation; Lions Eye Care Niagara; St. Davids & District Lions Club”.

Currently there are two sites in the Niagara Health System (NHS) that perform cataract surgeries; the Ontario Street Site in
St. Catharines and the Welland Hospital. Last year the NHS performed 5,501 cataract surgeries. Cataract surgery is the removal of the lens of the eye
that has developed an opacification (referred to as a cataract). Metabolic changes of the lens fibers over time lead to the development of the cataract
and loss of transparency, causing impairment or loss of vision. During cataract surgery, a patient’s aging and cloudy natural lens is removed and
replaced with a synthetic lens to restore the transparency of the lens.
Dr. George Beiko demonstrated how the microscope provides clear
images to health care providers.

The Tree of Lights Sparkled with Hope this Holiday Season
Hundreds of community members filled the air with
Christmas spirit at the 20th Annual “Tree of Lights”
in Thorold and the 26th Annual in St. Catharines this
past November.
Donations from generous community members
throughout the holiday season kept our “Tree of
Lights” shining brightly at St. Catharines City Hall
and on Towpath Street in Thorold all season long!
We are delighted to announce that, together, we
raised $77,500 after expenses! These funds have
allowed us to purchase nine Crib Stretchers
for the Maternal Child Care Unit at the
General.

The Gift of Communication
The Speech Language Pathology Department has two full-time and one parttime
staff that see approximately 900 in-patients and out-patients per year.
They are a small department with large hearts and they work extremely hard (on
a small budget) to provide the gift of communication to all patients who visit the
General. When the St. Catharines Singing Saints became aware of their need for
new equipment, they came to the rescue with a generous donation of $2,125.
These funds were used to
purchase two Pocketalkers and
a Biofeedback Set. Pocketalkers
are personal assistive
listening devices that enable
hearing impaired people
to communicate effectively
one-to-one as well as in large
groups. They offer patients
greater comfort, security and
independence while at the
General. The Biofeedback Set
is a state-of-the-art piece of
equipment used to treat facial
and swallowing paralysis and
disorders.
Kaylee Baron demonstrated one of the many functions of the new
state-of-the-art Biofeedback <strong>set</strong>. In this exercise, she is using the
icon on the computer to retrain her muscles to smile.
The Singing Saints have stayed true to their motto “We sing that they shall speak”
and we are truly grateful for their continued support over the past 16 years.
A Magical Gift for our Youngest Patients
Our Fire Figher friends have done it
again! The 23rd Annual Magic n’
Miracles show, held December 2010, was
a great success and raised $20,000 for the
Maternal Child & Paediatric Department.
These funds allowed us to purchase two vitally
important pieces of equipment for our youngest
patients: a Cardio Respiratory Monitor (Labour &
Delivery) and a Crib Stretcher (Paediatrics).
The St. Catharines Professional Fire Fighters’
Association has informed us that they raised another
$20,000 at the Magic Show this past December, 2011.
This is exciting news for the Department…stay tuned
to discover what patient care equipment we were able
to purchase!
We are ecstatic to announce that over the past 24 years… $550,000 has been raised
from the Magic n’ Miracles show!

A Tribute to Papa Tuck
In honour of Ronald (Orv) Tuck, a beloved husband, father, brother,
friend and cherished Papa, his family and friends gave generously
to the Paediatric Department at the General. Orv’s family chose to
support the Paediatric Department in honour of his eternal love for his
grandchildren and were thrilled to fund the purchase of a state-of-theart
Vital Signs Monitor.
On behalf of the SCGH Foundation and Paediatric Department staff,
we would like to sincerely thank the Tuck family and their friends. Orv’s
memory will live on through this generous donation.

Chef Stephen Treadwell and his talented Team have done it again! Our wish, for funds to purchase patient care equipment, came true at the 4th Annual
Wish Dinner held March 30, 2012 at Treadwell Farm-to-Table Cuisine. The soulful sounds of jazz (compliments of TiannaH and her ensemble) filled the
room as a sold out crowd enjoyed an elegant evening of delectable food and delicious wines. The evening concluded with a rowdy live auction that had guests
competing to get their favourite packages including: a Fallsview Casino overnight stay for two with a rare 3L bottle of 2005 Cabernet Franc from Reif Estates
Winery; a Great Wolf Lodge package of
goodies for the family; and a wine dinner
tasting menu for six guests at Treadwell
Farm-to-Table Cuisine.

Lifesaving Equipment Arrives at the
General… Because of YOU!
When Niagara residents learned of the great need for two state-ofthe-art
Vigileo Monitors, they generously opened their hearts
and their wallets.
Sepsis is a deadly illness that affects 18 million people worldwide.
Commonly known as a blood infection, sepsis is a severe illness in which
the bloodstream is overwhelmed by bacteria. When people are septic,
this equipment monitors their various organs (heart/lung) enabling the
Doctor to diagnose and treat promptly and aggressively.
“We have made great progress in our fight against sepsis” says Kathy
Willis, Regional Sepsis Coordinator. “In the past year, we have decreased
mortality rates by almost 25%, thanks in part to new protocols, increased
awareness and education, and also, the use of the Vigileo monitors
donated by the Foundation.”

Big Move Cancer Ride has BIG NEWS
$1.18 million raised since 2009
Sunshine, blue skies and bright
smiles greeted our riders as they
began their journey at the 3rd Annual
Big Move Cancer Ride on Sunday,
September 11, 2011. Cyclists stood
proudly at the start line as they joined
along in the singing of our National
Anthem by Andrew Mammarella.
After a few inspirational speeches by
local heroes, the riders <strong>set</strong> off on their
journey of a 50k, 100k or 100 mile ride.
Along the route, cyclists were treated to drinks and healthy snacks at rest stops
and were kept safe by our dozens of volunteers and members of the Niagara
Regional Police. As cyclists crossed the finish line they were cheered on by local
cheerleaders from the Niagara Ice Dogs; Brock University and St. Paul Catholic
High School.
These cyclists showed incredible commitment to the Ride through their training
and fundraising efforts and were treated to a much deserved celebration back
at Club Roma. With live entertainment from Broken Cadence, a delicious hot
meal prepared by Club Roma and plenty of refreshments, our riders celebrated
with family & friends.
To close this momentous day, the Niagara Regional Police Pipe Band led by a
Colour Guard from local Branch 4 of the Royal Canadian Legion kicked off the
closing ceremonies. The St. Catharines General Hospital Foundation is truly
grateful to the over 500 riders, 200 volunteers and hundreds of supporters who
came together for one common goal – to raise funds for the regional Walker
Family Cancer Centre. We are thrilled to announce that after expenses, an
incredible $478,000 was raised! Since the inaugural event in 2009, $1.18 million
has been raised for the purchase of equipment essentials in radiation therapy
for the regional cancer centre.
Thank you to the 200+ volunteers whose assistance during the Big Move made it possible for this event to
be such a huge success! An event of this magnitude requires a great deal of work and commitment before,
during and after the ride. We would like to thank our dedicated Big Move Cancer Ride Committee who
volunteer their time and talents throughout the year.

Hope Becomes $100,000 Reality
The Niagara Tournament of Hope Golf Tournament has been a dedicated supporter of the
Evangelista/Adams Centre for Breast Screening since 2005. The 2011 event raised $18,500
bringing their total to an incredible $116,750! These funds have been directed toward the
purchase of the state-of-the-art Digital Mammography Unit that was installed at the Breast
Screening Centre in 2008.
The 10th annual event, in support of the Evangelista/Adams Centre for Breast Screening and
Wellspring Niagara, will take place Monday, June 11th at Twenty Valley Golf Course.
Portstock Surpasses their Fundraising Goal!
When Mike Wilson passed away in 2004, his
friends made a commitment to fundraise for
the new regional Walker Family Cancer Centre in his
memory. Mike Howe (friend) and Dianne Warkentin
(sister), along with a dedicated committee of friends,
<strong>set</strong> their goals high… $50,000.
The committee organized the inaugural Portstock
Music Festival in 2008. This Festival is a rockin’
good time! Guests enjoy great live entertainment,
refreshments, food vendors, silent auction, prizes
and more atop the picturesque Henley Island.
The 4th Annual Portstock Music Festival was a great
success raising $18,500 and was enough to elevate
them past their goal to an incredible total of $53,500!

Mowing for Money
In 2003, the St. Catharines General Hospital Foundation was thrilled to receive our largest single donation of $750,000 from the Robert E. Redmond family,
plus an additional donation of $250,000 in 2011, to purchase capital patient-care equipment for the Emergency Department. In recognition of this generous
donation, the Niagara Health System renamed the department “The Robert E. Redmond Emergency Department”.
Robert E. Redmond passed away in 2005, but his legacy continues to live on. We are pleased to report that his commitment to the betterment of health care in
Niagara will be forever remembered as the naming of the Emergency Department will carry on to the new Health Care Complex.
Mr. Redmond began his broadcasting career in 1946 as an announcer and went on to establish “Redmond Broadcasting” and owned numerous radio stations
throughout Canada. He led a very accomplished life; in fact, Redmond Broadcasting was the first company in Niagara to receive an FM license.

The “Sick Kidz” committee did it again! For the second year, this dedicated
group organized a three day fundraiser featuring: Comedy, Hip Hop and
Rock. Their efforts were met with great success! The committee raised $1,680
and they are not stopping there; they have plans to raise even more money this
summer for the Paediatric Department at the General.

BECOME A VOLUNTEER
The St. Catharines General Hospital (SCGH) Auxiliary,
formed in 1865, is the oldest hospital auxiliary in North
America! We are a dedicated group of men and women who
fundraise (hospital gift shoppe, bingo, lottery ticket sales,
raffles, bake sales, vendor program and more) to purchase
urgently needed hospital equipment.
The SCGH Auxiliary is looking
for new members!

There are many ways to be involved with the Auxiliary:
Greeting families in the ICU, Oncology, ER and Admitting;
Flower Ladies; and Sewing & Knitting groups just to name a few.

Honouring a Colleague & Friend
Members of the Niagara Peninsula Road Builders
Association presented the Foundation with a
generous gift in the amount of $4,484. These
funds were used to purchase three state-of-theart
Chemotherapy Chairs and three stools for the
Oncology Department in loving memory of Janet
Smith.
Janet worked for the Road Builders Association as
their Secretary and was a dedicated employee for
over 40 years. She was a much loved colleague and
friend and is greatly missed.
The Foundation would like to thank our new friends
at the Niagara Peninsula Road Builders Association
for making a difference in the lives of patients
undergoing treatment in the Oncology Department
at the General.
Family of the late Janet Smith were honoured
to be a part of the special presentation and
affix a plaque, bearing her name, on the
new Chemotherapy Chair. (seated) Nancy
Edenson (sister); Jentry Melinko (great
niece); Sandra Beauvais (longtime friend &
co-worker) and Kim Melinko (niece).
