Biking for BIG Bucks
$278,800 raised for the new Walker Family Cancer Centre
Why did you
participate?
“Everyone is affected by cancer so we
believe in the cause. It was a great race -
well organized, and it was nice having
people cheer you on along the way.”
~ Shari Reay
“My wife just passed away - she was
diagnosed with lung cancer last year and
it spread to her brain. That’s why I
participated this year. Before she died we
had planned to fundraise for the new
cancer building, so I am carrying on with
this plan.” ~ Gino Marchionda
(The Niagara Clean Team)
“I work at the casino and saw it
advertised and thought it was for a great
cause. My husband was diagnosed with
liver cancer in June 2007, and received a
new liver in August 2008. I am here in
celebration of his life.”
~ Mary Jane Jarvis (Team Hot Wheels)
History was made on Sunday, September, 20th,
2009 as 235 cyclists took to the scenic roads of
the Niagara Region to raise money for the
Walker Family Cancer Centre.
Cyclists arrived with many goals - some to honour
the memory of a loved one who fought the battle of
cancer, some to enjoy a day of cycling and some to
face a personal challenge to cross the finish line.
With the support and generosity of local businesses,
community organizations, volunteers, family, friends
and co-workers our goal was surpassed for our
inaugural event. The Big Move Cancer Ride
Committee is thrilled to announce that an
overwhelming $278,800 and counting was raised
after expenses for the Walker Family Cancer Centre.
A sincere thank you to: cyclists; 100+ volunteers;
sponsors; friends and our dedicated committee
members who supported The Big Move Cancer Ride.
We look forward to seeing you next year on Sunday,
September 12th, 2010.
"I chose to ride and lead a team, because
we have waited so long for a new state of
the art Hospital. This resource is so
important for the physical, social and
economic health of our region. I have a
close friend who just lost his battle with
cancer, he was an inspiration and his
memory makes all of us realize that
cancer treatment facilities are needed,
close to home." ~ John Suk
Walker Industries team who raised $36,415. John Suk was our top
fundraising male at $12,530 and Mary Basciano was our top
fundraising female at $9,603.
at 14th Annual Golf Classic!
Even the few drops of rain couldn't dampen the spirits of the 168 participants of
the 14th Annual Golf Classic that took place on Monday, July 6th at the St.
Catharines Golf & Country Club. An outstanding $60,000 was raised after
expenses and will be directed toward the purchase of the state-of-the-art Digital
Fluoroscopy Unit that was installed in January and has screened approximately
1,000 patients.
Guests enjoyed a great day of golf, exciting prizes and delicious food with a new menu promoting foods
from around the world while supporting our hospital. Cast members from Mirvish Productions' smash hit
"The Sound of Music" and the Niagara Ice Dogs also enjoyed the day.
We would like to extend a special thank you to
Stan Parzygnat, Matt Harris and the team at
Sundawn Integrated Services for their continued
support and generosity. Sundawn Integrated
Services, a national leader in heating and air
conditioning for over 50 years, showed
enormous support for the St. Catharines General
Hospital Foundation when it accepted the role of
Presenting Sponsor of the Foundation's Annual
Golf Classic for the sixth consecutive year. To date
we have raised $ 562,174. of the 1.2 million
needed for the Digital Fluoroscopy Unit.
Thank you to our generous sponsors and
volunteers; your support is integral in making the
It’s Our Time - Please Help Us Help You
Every year 67,000 people from Niagara are forced to
travel outside the region for medical care. That's one in
six people - and that's not acceptable. Our patients and
their families shouldn't be burdened with the additional
stress of commuting out of the region for treatment.
The It's Our Time Campaign has raised $26.5 million
toward our $40 million goal. Help us reach the finish
line. We can't make this happen without you.
Once again, the young philanthropists from our local school system
never let us down. Participating schools this past year: Ferndale, Glen
The BIG Move Cancer Ride committee would like to extend special
congratulations to Lynne Corfield and Nick Pelych. Lynne, a dedicated
member of "Team Sandra - Heroes Unit for Jacob" eagerly attended the first
training session. During the training session, Lynne had an accident which
resulted in a broken collar bone. She did not give up! Lynne showed her
support by walking the 50k route. We wish her the best of luck with her
recovery. Nick Pelych also chose a different mode of transportation by inline
skating the 50k route. Congratulations to both of you.
Niagara’s First MRI Breast Coil Arrives at the General
A Family’s Dream Comes True
Sarah Walters, loving wife and devoted mother and
grandmother, quietly passed away on Sunday, March 4th, 2007
while anxiously awaiting an appointment for a specific breast
screening MRI procedure in Hamilton. While the St. Catharines
General Hospital has an MRI, it did not have the coil required to
do the specific breast screening that Sarah needed at that time. To
honour her memory and reduce wait times, the Walters family
established a memorial fund in Sarah's name to raise the required
funds to purchase Niagara's first MRI Breast Coil.
Due to the Walters family's dedication to this cause and the
support of our community, $ 132,000 has been raised. The Breast
Coil has been screening patients since July, 2009. Dr. Amit Mehta,
Chief of Diagnostic Imaging was quoted: "It's going to make a
dramatic impact on the health care of all Niagarans."
It is with sincere gratitude that we thank the Walters family. Sarah's
memory will live on and lives will be saved because of your
dedication.
Morgan’s 2nd Machine
Our office was notified that the special care nursery was in
urgent need of a special piece of equipment to transfer our
babies with special needs. Thanks to the Mattern Family, in
honour of Morgan who was born at the SCGH 12 years ago, the
equipment is now a reality. Morgan stated “this is the best
birthday present ever!”
Murray Walters and Foundation Staff enjoyed
working together to secure this vital piece of
equipment. Family members were proud to
celebrate this fantastic accomplishment.
When Life Gives You Lemons...
Young philanthropists Hanna
Hollingworth, Abigail & Aiden
Schonewille decided on a hot day in
July they would ask their friends and
neighbours to support our Paediatric
Department.
Thanks to their efforts, $102 was
raised for our young patients.
The Clifton David Band rocked the stage on Saturday night
An outstanding $14,000 was raised at the 2nd Annual Portstock
Festival for the future Walker Family Cancer Centre. Event
organizers Dianne Warkentin and Mike Howe were delighted that
700 rock fans gathered together on Henley Island in memory of her
brother and his friend Mike Wilson.
This year’s feature was an amalgamation of blues, rock, funk, soul and
world music, performed by Australian singer/songwriter “Harper”. A
local Port Dalhousie born and raised Rhys Jenkins was invited to join
Toronto’s Clifton David Band for a few songs as they rocked the joint
with songs from Jimmy Hendricks
and Led Zeppelin. Thank you to
sponsors, committee members &
volunteers for all your hard work.
Steve Dumont, pictured on the
left, agreed to cut off his 12” long
hair for donations towards the
Walker Family Cancer Centre.
Individuals who donated were
then invited on stage to cut off a
loch of hair. Congratulations
Steve for raising $2,500.
Aiden & Abigail Schonewille are all smiles
after making their generous donation
An Evening of Magic
In Memory of Glenn Steele
Mónica Gomis-Steele understands first hand the fear, confusion and heartache of
having cancer touch your life.
Her best friend, soul mate and husband Glenn Steele passed away after courageously
battling Multiple Myeloma - a type of blood cancer. Glenn required treatment from a
Plasmapheresis machine that was only available in Hamilton; and travelling outside the
city for treatment added additional burden to Glenn's suffering. Realizing the need for
a Plasmapheresis machine in Niagara, it has become Monica's quest to ensure that
Niagara residents will not have to travel for treatment. This was "Glenn's Wish".
With help from Kathy Iftody, Mónica organized a magical fundraiser that took place on
August 28th and 29th. Danny Zzzz, Magician & Illusionist, donated proceeds from two
of his Magic Hypnosis Shows in Niagara Falls to support the cause.
Nearly $31,000 has been raised to cover the cost of the Plasmapheresis machine since
July 9th! Thank you for your dedication toward improving health care in Niagara. Extra
funds are still needed to achieve this goal, which will make an immense difference in
the lives of many people in our Niagara Peninsula! A Community Bank Account has been
established at the Bank of Montreal called "Glenn's Wish" (0033-8098-180) which will
channel the funds to the Foundation toward the purchase of a Plasmapheresis Machine.
TURNING OVER A NEW LEAF (OR FOUR) One of only twelve properties in Canada (AND THE
ONLY IN NIAGARA) to receive this designation, White Oaks has earned the prestigious Four Leaf rating from the
Audubon Green Leaf TM Program. To receive a Four Leaf ranking on the first attempt is unprecedented, but... not
content to rest on our laurels, we are set on getting that fifth leaf.
REDUCING OUR CARBON FOOTPRINT With critical buy-in from senior management and team
