SCGHF Secures Funds for Fluoroscopy Unit
Over $850,000 raised in support of Diagnostic Imaging
The Digital Fluoroscopy Unit is essential in diagnosing cancer in
gastrointestinal tumors and other abnormalities of internal organs
such the esophagus, stomach, and small and large intestines as well as
assessment of the kidneys and bladder. This vital piece of equipment is
used to obtain quick, accurate images and immediate diagnosis of
strokes, cancers, croons, colitis and the evaluation of veins joints and
clots.
The Fluoroscopy is a painless, non-invasive X-ray exam that allows
radiologists to use "real-time" imaging techniques. Unlike traditional X-
rays, which produce still pictures, the Fluoroscopy can capture full
motion. This technique is often used to examine the entire
gastrointestinal tract, specifically to diagnose tumors and other
abnormalities. Contrast media, such as barium, iodine, and air are used
to visualize internal organs as they work.
One of the most important benefits of this procedure is that it allows the
doctor to view the body's inner systems while they are actually
functioning. A doctor can watch a patient's stomach as it digests food or
the esophagus can be visualized while a patient is swallowing. This
procedure allows the doctor to obtain valuable diagnostic information
that may not be available without the use of this sophisticated
equipment.
Today, radiation exposure is an
important safety consideration.
The way this machine was
designed enables the
equipment to produce high
quality images with very little
radiation. These extremely low
radiation levels are much safer
for our physicians and patients
then traditional X-rays.

* Provide expansive diagnosis and intervention
services for gastrointestinal, cular, orthopaedic,
urologic, respirology, skeletal and thoracic
procedures.
* Help us recruit and retain additional Diagnostic
specialists and allied health professionals.

Tree of Lights Exceeds Goal
Our largest crowd ever joined us to celebrate our 16th Annual "Tree of
Lights" in Thorold and the 22nd Annual in St. Catharines in
November. The beautiful trees were dedicated to the memory Bob Allan,
Bluma & Bram Appel, Alfie LaVigna and Mel Swart.
Guests enjoyed hot chocolate, coffee, delicious food and cookies, while
Olympic Bronze Medalist, Claire Carver-Dias and representatives from the
Niagara Ice Dogs signed autographs for their fans. Young children and
guests were kept busy at the craft tables, posing for photographs with
Father Christmas and listening to the amazing entertainment.
We are thrilled to announce that we have exceeded our goal for the 2007
"Tree of Lights" campaign and Christmas Appeal by raising a grand total
of $150,000. Funds will be directed toward the purchase the Paediatric
Pigg-O-Stat Immobilizer for the Diagnostic Imaging Unit and the ECG
Management System for the Cardiac Investigative Unit at the St.
Catharines General Hospital. Thank you to the hundreds of people who
supported this campaign!

Smooth Jazz Concert Series
Hits A High Note in Niagara
Aspecial thank you to all those who joined us for the 2nd Annual Smooth
Jazz Concert Series this summer at Château des Charmes. The Smooth Jazz
Artists of Amy Sky, Marc Jordan, Stephan Moccio, Johannes Linstead and
Four80East performed amazing concerts in the intimate setting of the Vineyard
Courtyard of Château des Charmes. Guests also enjoyed delicious cuisine
from local chefs Stephen Treadwell, Erik Peacock and James Olberg.
Thank you to our presenting sponsor, Wave 94.7FM, for their continued
support of the concert series and to our hosts at Château des Charmes for
their extraordinary hospitality. We also would like to thank our sponsors for
helping us make this series a huge success.
All proceeds from the concert series will be directed toward the purchase of
new patient equipment for the St. Catharines General Site.

The Pink Event
Fashion Show & Dinner
In October, the second annual Pink Event Fashion Show and Dinner took
place at the Zooma Zooma Café in Jordan. This year's event featured
"Fabulous at 50" models wearing designer fashions, a wonderful dinner
and a Chinese Raffle. Proceeds totaling $3,000 will be directed toward
the Evangelista-Adams Centre for Breast Screening.
Four80East designated the September concert as the official Canadian
CD Release Party for their latest CD, EN ROUTE. Excitement was in the
air as they kicked off their North American tour in Niagara.
It is with great sadness that we announce the tragic
death of physician Dr. Ken Park, age 41, on
November 20. A Family Practitioner and resident of
St. Catharines, Dr. Park joined the Medical Staff at St.
Catharines General Site in 1992 in the Departments
of Family Medicine and Emergency Medicine.
“Dr. Park was an exceptional physician with a unique
ability to care for critically-ill people, and his passing
is a great loss to the Emergency Department and the
patients he cared for with great skill and
compassion,” said Dr. John McAuley, NHS Chief,
Department of Emergency Medicine.
In Memory of Dr. Ken Park
“He was a compassionate and highly-skilled physician,
who was very well liked and highly regarded. Staff in
the ED are taking his loss very hard.”
Thank you to Dr. Perossa for organizing a Memorial
Service in January for friends, family, colleagues and
patients to reflect and celebrate Dr. Park’s life.
To date, over $9,200 has been donated toward the
Emergency Department in memory of Dr. Park.

SCG Lounge Re-Opens
Staff vote for their preference
In January an official ceremony took place to welcome SCG staff to the
new & improved lounge. The lounge has been transformed into a
modern, clean, bright and restful environment for staff to enjoy.

Paediatrics
Thank you to Mike Cvetanovic for his continued effort with Poinsettia
Sales to help fund this project. Also, thank you to McNamara & Reynolds
for securing the donation of blinds from Hunter Douglas. Over the next
few weeks, The Foundation will continue efforts to secure new furniture
for the Staff Lounge.
The Foundation was thrilled to be involved in a project that provides our
hard working staff with a place to relax and reflect.
During a recent award ceremony, several grade 4 and 5 students at Glen
Ridge Public School presented the proceeds from their 4th Annual
Book and Toy Sale totaling $550 toward the Paediatric Department.

On Saturday, September 20th residents of Niagara were invited to the
3rd Annual Pancake Breakfast in the St. Catharines Farmers’ Market.
Once again, this generous group donated proceeds totaling $1,700 to
The Foundation to purchase state-of-the-art equipment for the SCG.

building a healthier, happier workplace.

Diamonds Are Forever
Most successful Gala in Foundation history!
Saturday, October 27, 2007 an evening unlike any other - an evening with
James Bond. A record 480 guests gathered at the White Oaks Conference
Resort & Spa in support of the St. Catharines General Hospital Foundation's
Eleventh Annual Gala Fundraiser. With 007 as the theme guests and the
venue were correspondingly attired and decorated to project "the Bond"
flavour.
Welcomed by the events Presenting Sponsor, Bruno Dammizio, the guests
enjoyed music by Jonesy, Deanna Hunt & Cara Nunnenmacher; artistic
design by Jonquille Design and gourmet fare prepared by Fetzer Challenge
winner Chef Michael Price. Hosted by long time hospital supporter White
Oaks Conference Resort & Spa guests joined together to raise a record
$200,000 to aid in the purchase of urgently needed capital equipment for
our hospital. The silent auction tables were crowded with anxious bidders
while live auctioneer Archie Katzman in his inimitable style encouraged the
audience to go for many "one of a kind packages."
Thanks to the generosity of our guests, sponsors, donors, committee
members, volunteers and supporters all, we can continue to serve our
community by offering the best in quality health care. To quote Mr.
Dammizio "life is not measured by the number of breaths we take…but by
the moments that take our breath away." The community's response to our
health care needs was one of those breath taking moments. Thank you!

on Par with Healthcare
Once again, our friends Amiel Chios & Gus Vogiatzis organized a
highly successful golf tournament with this year's proceeds
totaling $15,000 toward the new Regional Healthcare complex.
Guests in the Lina Linguini's/Fresco's Golf Tournament enjoyed a
winning combination of golf, a fabulous dinner at Fresco's, one-of-akind
prizes while supporting the new hospital. To date, Lina Linguini's
& Fresco's Euro Grill have raised over $41,000 for our local hospital.

The Tri-Affiliate Golf Tournament held at the Whirlpool Golf Club
this summer enjoyed tremendous success benefiting three
hospitals in Niagara. The Tri-Affiliates, which includes the Insurance
Brokers Association of Niagara Falls, the St. Catharines
and District Insurance Brokers Association and the
Niagara South Insurance Brokers Association, donated
$3,500 toward The SCGH Foundation as well as the
