A prescription for fine dining, friends, and fundraising!
An evening of special friends, fantastic
music and one-of-a-kind cuisine created a
night to remember at the 12th Annual "Say
Awe" Gala on February 12, 2011.
The SCGH Foundation was thrilled to have
Alan Frew, lead singer of Glass Tiger, as our
Master of Ceremonies. The 5-time Juno Award
winner kept the evening on schedule and
treated guests to a wonderful performance
including hit songs 'Don't Forget Me' (When
I'm Gone) and 'I Believe' (world-renowned hit
anthem of the 2010 Olympics).
Over 400 health care professionals,
community leaders, and friends of the
Foundation showed continued support of their
local community hospital during the live
auction. Guests battled with their bidding
paddles over one-of-a-kind auction items
including a $10,000 diamond ring from Kavar
Jewellers and a Trip to the Montreal Grand
Prix from Performance Mercedes-Benz.
After enjoying a delicious six course meal
complete with a divine vanilla gelato dessert,
guests danced the night away to the sounds of
Sandy Vine & the Midnights.
Guests who followed their Doctor's Orders
to attend the "Say Awe" Gala experienced
side effects including: excessive smiling;
feelings of extreme happiness; and the
sudden urge to show support for a worthy
cause.

enabled us to raise an incredible $140,000 net revenue.
The following state-of-the-art equipment has been
purchased for our community hospital:
Clint Eastwood; Gordon Ramsey; and Bryan Adams
were among the many celebrities who personalized
scrubs for our exciting silent auction. The scrubs in most
demand were no surprise, Justin Bieber! The SCGH
Foundation is thankful to all our friends who provided
one-of-a-kind items for our silent auction.

The SCGH Foundation Gets Niagara Moving!
Niagarans came together this spring to get "Heart Healthy" for a great cause. Proceeds from the Annual Run/Walk and Spin for the General
events were used to purchase a much needed Biphasic Defibrillator for Cardiac Care at the St. Catharines General. Defibrillators are used as a
treatment for life-threatening cardiac events when the heart needs to be restarted by delivering a therapeutic dose of electrical energy to the heart.
On Your Mark... Get Set... Go!
Mike Cvetanovic jogs the last few feet with Julie McPherson;

complete the 5k walk in loving memory of Orv Tuck.
Over 255 participants hit the pavement for the
Annual 5k Run/Walk for the General.
Mother Nature blessed our over 225 participants with a dry day as they laced up for the 12th Annual Run/Walk for the General held
on May 1st at Club Roma. Runners, walkers and their families were treated to a much deserved delicious barbeque lunch as the
prizes for racers and fundraisers were announced.
The 12th Annual event was a great success raising over $10,000 net revenue for Cardiac Care at the General! A special thank you to
our top individual fundraiser Dr. Hyung Kim ($1,200) and our top fundraising team Papa Tuck's Team ($1,095) for their generosity. Don't
miss out on the 13th Annual event taking place Sunday, May 6th, 2012.
Spinning Their Way to a Healthy Heart
Following the 1k Kids Fun Run, dozens of young
athletes enjoyed the Turtle Bouncer & making
Mother's Day crafts with Creative Moments.

Doctor Grand Opening celebration
on May 7, 2011. Over 85 participants
enjoyed a challenging day of spinning, nutritious smoothies from Cora's and a delicious
lunch spread from Antipastos.
A great big thank you to: JR Enns; Dr. Joanne Hubley; Russell Irvine; Sue Nenadovic and
Vittoria Wikston who each donated their time and talents to lead our riders through a
vigorous 45 minute workout. Participant, sponsor and volunteer efforts paid off as the Spin
for the General raised over $7,000 net revenue!

Treadwell Grants Wish to Speech Pathology
On April 15, 2011 guests were treated to an evening of exquisite food, fine wines and exciting
entertainment.The 3rd Annual Wish Dinner was a tremendous success thanks to Chef Stephen
Treadwell and his team at Treadwell Farm-to-Table Cuisine. Since 2009, the annual Wish Dinner has raised
an incredible $55,875 after expenses! We are thrilled to announce the purchase of a Portable Digital Imaging
System (Videofluoroscopy) for the Speech-Language Pathology Department at the General.
This Digital Imaging System is a live digital recording system that allows Speech-Language Pathologists to
take high definition images of the swallowing mechanism and vocal chords at the patients bedside. For the
first time at the General, Speech Pathology In-Patients will be assessed more promptly & conveniently at
their bedside. This System will enable the department to assess critically ill patients who are unable to travel
to the Radiology department.

violinist - Grenville Pinto.
Treadwell's commitment to improving health care in Niagara is evident through their continued support of
the SCGH Foundation. We look forward to many more years of granting wishes!

Paediatrics
Ronald McDonald stopped by the
Paediatric Department at the St.
Catharines General in March, 2011 to bring
cheer and smiles to our young patients.
Children were thrilled to receive loot bags
from Ronald and his friends at the Welland
Avenue McDonalds and gave plenty of
smiles and high-fives in appreciation.

grant from the Royal
Canadian Legion
Ontario Provincial
Command Branches
and Ladies Auxiliaries
Charitable Foundation.
This grant was used to
purchase an urgently
needed Electric Bed for the In-Patient Medical Department at the
General. This bed will offer increased comfort and greater
independence for our patients. The Royal Canadian Legion has been
long time friends of the SCGH Foundation and we are truly grateful
for their continued support.
Neil O'Farrell (President, Branch 24); Barbara Earle (1st Vice President,
Branch 24); and Henry Nikiczuk (Zone B-5 Commander) stopped by the
General to learn more about the state-of-the-art Electric Bed.
Retired Nurse, Barbara Macdonald,
understands the importance of state-ofthe-art
healthcare equipment. She wanted
to ensure that our medical professionals
have access to the equipment needed to
diagnose, monitor and treat their patients
and made a very generous gift to the
Foundation.
The Maternal Child Department was in great need of a Blood
Warmer when their outdated unit was deemed "unfit to use."
The Foundation was thrilled when Niagara Prosthetics &
Orthotics Corporation came to the rescue and purchased the
unit needed for the Operating Room.
The Blood Warmer (pictured on the left) is used to assist
Caesarean Section Deliveries on unstable patients. As well,
whenever a patient is suffering from any type of trauma and they
require blood or intravenous fluids, these fluids must be warm to
ensure that the patient does not suffer from a drop in body
temperature.
The SCGH Foundation would like to thank our friends at the
Rotary Club, St. Catharines Lakeshore, for continuing to
support the equipment needs of our local community hospital.
They generously donated $2,500 this year to purchase a much
needed newborn bassinette for the Labour & Delivery
Department at the General.

Awards Grant
Retired Nurse Continues to Care
This gift was used to purchase 16 special IV
Pumps for Departments throughout the
hospital (Emergency; Medical; Paediatrics;
Labour & Delivery and Critical Care) as well
as a Transport Stretcher for the Operating
Room. Thank you Barbara; your gift will
impact many lives in our community.

Mental Health Department Receives Needed Funding
Patients in the Mental Health Department at the General have been enjoying preparing delicious meals; participating
in activities; making crafts; and taking part in music and art therapy each week thanks to a generous staff member
at the St. Catharines General. Jacqueline Bergsma (Supervisor, MDR) made a commitment to fund the Recreation
Therapy program for an entire year in loving memory of her brother Paul Engelen. The Recreation Therapy program
focuses on developing the skills, knowledge and behaviours that will encourage patients to enjoy their leisure optimally,
develop coping and communication skills and to function independently in the community.
Staff, patients and their families are truly grateful and overwhelmed with the generosity shown by Jacqueline. To learn

For the fourth consecutive year,
Niagara This Week held an
advertising promotion whereby a
stuffed animal was purchased for
each advertisement sold. This
resulted in a wonderful donation
of 50 cuddly companions for our
young patients in the Paediatric Departments throughout
the Niagara Health System.
Gino Marchionda (Rotarian) and Dr. Albert

Abby & Aidan Schonewille kept friends,
family and neighbours fully stocked on
sweet lemonade and delicious homemade
chocolate chip cookies at their annual
fundraiser on Saturday, August 6th. The 3rd
annual fundraising event was a tremendous
success raising $451.70 for the Special
Care Nursery at the General! Since 2008,
these fundraising siblings continue to prove
that giving starts at home by raising
$753.70 for our youngest patients ~ we are
truly thankful for their ongoing support.

for their fundraiser and worked for five hours
selling their homemade treats.

Lions Club Supports Mental Health Education
Adonation of $333 from the Garden City Lions Club enabled the Mental Health Department to purchase
several Educational Documentary DVDs. These DVDs are used to educate newly diagnosed patients,
as well as in group therapy for outpatients. Many of these DVDs include true stories of individuals who are
recovering well and 'living with' versus 'suffering' with mental illness which are key in inspiring, lifting stigma,
encouraging compliance with medication, self-help, lifestyle change and participation in talk therapies.

Tour du Lac Takes Riding to Heart
The "Take It To Heart" committee of cycling enthusiasts organized an
exciting seven-day adventure around Lake Ontario to raise awareness
and funds for the Heart Investigation Unit at the new Health Care
Complex.
On Sunday, July 17th, nine motivated cyclists began their challenging
seven-day, 920km tour around Lake Ontario. Their trip was made
challenging with the intense heat and humid conditions, but they were able
to power through knowing they were supporting an important cause near
and dear to many of their hearts.
These dedicated cyclists were thrilled to announce their fundraising total
of over $20,000 net revenue; making their family, friends and community
very proud. Organizing committee members (The Rotary Club of St.
Catharines South; The May Court Club of St. Catharines and Performance
Cars) are thrilled with the results and are looking forward to adding more
cycling friends to their group in 2012.
The event was designed to encourage cyclists of all levels to participate by
providing the choices to cycle 30, 50 or 85k in the first day's ride out of St.
Catharines and the final day's ride home. In the photo - the nine core cyclists are
joined with an enthusiastic group of riders, in front of the new Health Care
Complex, to help kick off their seven-day fundraising journey.
Baked Goods Benefit Paediatric
Department
Members of the Club Castropignano Ladies Auxiliary decided to use
their talents in making delicious homemade treats to benefit our
young patients. On March 19th, the ladies held a successful bake sale
fundraiser that resulted in a generous donation of $700.

Young philanthropists from
four local schools: Ferndale
Public School; Glen Ridge
Public School; Grapeview
Public School; and St. Charles
Catholic School spent their
school year collecting coins to
donate to the SCGH
Foundation. They did a terrific
job and collected $2,130!
Combined with proceeds from
previous years, the Foundation was able to purchase special Phototherapy Lights for
the Paediatric Department. A very special thank you to: "Coins for Kids" Chair John
Hunt and family; Boston Pizza; Seaway Farms; and Patrick Johnson (Draeger
Medical) for your contributions. Since the program's inception in 1990, an incredible
$80,003.27 has been raised for the Paediatric Department at the General!

A Grand Slam for Oncology
In honour of her 63rd birthday, the 6th Annual
Jeannette Giammarco Memorial Charity
Tournament took place on May 20th - 22nd.
Organized by Amy Giammarco, this event has been
a successful fundraiser for the Oncology
Department at the General as well as the McMaster
Children's Cancer Ward and Welland Humane
Society. This year, the memorial event raised
$2,033 for a six year total of over $10,000 for the
Oncology Department! These funds have allowed
us to purchase an ice machine; a sleeper chair; and
most recently, a chemo chair equipped with heat &
massage. Thank you to the Giammarco family;
event participants and sponsors, for your continued support.

Annual Golf Classic
FORE a Great Cause!
144 golfers braved the heat and humidity to enjoy the
16th Annual Golf Classic at the St. Catharines Golf &
Country Club. Guests enjoyed 18-holes of golf; exciting
prizes and live auction items; refreshing beverages and
delicious food featuring dishes from around the world.
We are thrilled to announce that with the generous
support of participants, guests, volunteers and sponsors,
$58,200 was raised after expenses at this year's
tournament and will be directed toward the regional Digital
Fluoroscopy Unit at the SCGH site. This Unit, used to
obtain quick, accurate images and immediate diagnosis of strokes, cancers, crohn`s,
colitis and the evaluation of veins, is the first of its kind with 3D image technology in
Canada. With the tremendous support of Sundawn Integrated Services (title sponsor),
we are thrilled to announce that $665,374 of the $1.2 million required has been raised
for this state-of-the-art equipment.
We would like to extend a special thank you to Stan Parzygnat (President), Matt Harris
(General Manager) and the team at Sundawn Integrated Services for their continued
support and generosity. For the eighth consecutive year, Sundawn Integrated
Services, a National leader in the heating and air conditioning service industry, has
shown enormous support of the SCGHF by acting as title sponsor for the Golf Classic.
Patients, family, friends and supporters of the Orthopaedic Department
were "On the Move" Sunday, May 7th as they took part in the Annual
Stroll at Montebello Park. This morning social fundraiser honoured
patients who have recently undergone orthopaedic surgery and celebrates
their regained mobility. The 12th Annual event raised $9,028 after
expenses! These funds will be used to purchase much needed equipment
for the Orthopaedic Department at the General.

for the SCGHF
Over 600 people enjoyed a delicious dinner
of wild game at the Niagara Hunting &
Fishing Club's annual Dinner & Dance held in
February 2011. The SCGH Foundation is
grateful to the Club for donating $2,000 from
this annual event toward purchasing patient
care equipment for the St. Catharines General.

Fundraising Over the
Airwaves
The Niagara Peninsula Amateur Radio Club
(NPARC) has done it again! For the third
year, the Radio Club has donated funds raised
from their Annual Canada Day Radio-Thon
toward urgently needed patient care equipment.
The Radio-Thon was a success raising $450
this year for a 3-year total of $1,411! A great big
thank you to our friends at NPARC for your
ongoing support.

The Niagara Peninsula Dental Association
understands the importance of having a
regional Cancer Centre here in Niagara. This
group of Dentists, active and retired, have
committed $25,000 toward patient services
and equipment for the state-of-the-art Walker
Family Cancer Centre. This generous gift from
past and present members of the Niagara
Peninsula Dental Association and their
families will be recognized in a Patient Exam
Room at the regional Walker Family Cancer
Centre.

Ned Insurance moved to St. Catharines in May,
2011 and celebrated their grand opening with a
charity BBQ in support of their local community
hospital. Their generous donation of $2,500 was

for Cardiac Care. The SCGH Foundation is thankful

Club Roma Ladies Auxiliary Fashion Show

"Hopped" into the General
with Easter Smiles
On April 12, 2011, a sold out crowd of 600 enjoyed the 13th
Annual Club Roma Ladies Auxiliary Fashion Show.
Delicious food and high fashion were the highlights of the
evening for this successful fundraising event. Since the
inaugural event in 1998, the Club Roma Ladies Auxiliary has
donated an incredible $51,000 to the Evangelista/Adams
Centre for Breast Screening which has been directed toward
purchasing the state-of-the-art Digital Mammography Unit
installed in December 2009. Thank you Club Roma Ladies
Auxiliary for your unwavering support of the
Evangelista/Adams Centre for Breast Screening.

Sick Kids for Sick Kids
Sadie and Annie Dick were working overtime
last summer to keep up with the demand for
their original beaded bracelets. The SCGH
Foundation was overwhelmed when the sisters
delivered $1,679 to the office. Since they started
selling their hand crafted bracelets in 2009,
Sadie and Annie have raised an incredible
$2,369 for the Walker Family Cancer Centre in
loving memory of their Grandfather Robert Little.

Children at the St. Catharines General Hospital
received a very special delivery from students at St.
Denis Separate School. The Paediatric Department
received 15 special Easter baskets full of toys and
games; and the Children's Mental Health Department
received much needed Art Supplies. Thank you Students
at St. Denis Separate School for spreading joy to our
young patients at the General!

Michael Henley (local Comedian) wanted to give
back to his community by raising funds to
purchase an "entertainment package" for the
Paediatric Department at the General. Together with a
group of talented local artists, Michael organized a
fundraising weekend of entertainment including Rock,
Hip-Hop and Comedy. The event was a success and
allowed the group to purchase: two 32" flat screen
televisions; xbox kinect; blue ray disc player; and an
assortment of dvd's and games.

Grateful Patient Shares Her Story
To: St. Catharines General Hospital Foundation
Awhile ago, November 12th, I found myself in the Prompt Care (Ontario
St.), where Dr. Chow was on duty. He confirmed my diagnosis of the
Walk-in Clinic Doctor and made me aware of the seriousness of my health
condition - Blood Infection. The next day I was transferred to the
St. Catharines General Hospital, where Dr. Richard Safranyos continued
my treatment. I felt that his care and compassion was excellent.
Since I do not have a family doctor, Dr. Safranyos organized in-home
treatment for me. I know the progress in my health condition, I owe to those
two doctors (Dr. Chow and Dr. Safranyos) and I am very grateful to them.
Thank-you from the bottom of my heart! Here is enclosed a small donation
to the St. Catharines General Hospital Foundation, as my token of
appreciation.

A Magical Event
The Foundation was thrilled to hear that $20,000 was raised at the 24th Annual
Magic n' Miracles show hosted by the St. Catharines Professional Fire Fighters'
Association in 2010. These funds allowed the Foundation to purchase a Crib
Stretcher and a Cardio Respiratory Monitor for the Department. Over the past 24
years, an incredible $530,000 has been raised and directed toward the purchase of
urgently needed equipment for Maternal Child Care at the General. Don't miss out
