Groundbreaking Ceremony
Ignites Community
Official ceremony moves Niagara one step closer to a long awaited,
state-of-the-art heath-care complex and regional cancer centre
Not even the rain could dampen the enthusiasm of the
hundreds of supporters who gathered at the corner of
Fourth Avenue and First Street to witness the official
ground breaking of the new health-care complex and Walker
Family Cancer Centre. More than 500 invited guests were
joined by hospital officials, community members, fundraising
volunteers, health-care partners and staff representatives at an
event that will go down in Niagara's history as one of the most
anticipated events in at least a decade.
SCGH Foundation Board of Directors, Chris Nitsopoulos, John Veeneman, Rosemary Auld, Amy
Cook, Ameer Wakil (SCGHF President), Dr. Amit Mehta, Brad Johnstone and Sandra Sabo (SCGH
Foundation Chief Operating Officer) were thrilled to participate in the official groundbreaking
ceremony for the new health-care complex and Walker Family Cancer Centre.
This state-of-the-art health-care complex will replace the St.
Catharines General Site and Ontario Street Site. The facility will
also provide new regional services never before available in
Niagara, including treatments for cancer, heart disease and
longer-term mental health, all with state-of-the-art equipment.
The project will also have a positive impact on the local
economy,creating 5,400 jobs during the construction phase,
and approximately 200 new health-care jobs once the facility
opens to support the new regional services.
Working in close partnership with each of the hospital
foundations, The St. Catharines General Hospital Foundation is
dedicated to raising funds to bring these much-needed healthcare
programs and services to Niagara. To date, $25 million has
been raised toward the goal of $40 million for the “It’s Our
Time Campaign.
The official groundbreaking ceremony on Tuesday, April 28th
was an historic day for our community. Our dream of a new
up-to-date facility has taken a giant step closer to becoming a
reality. On behalf of the patients and families, we hope you will
continue to support this exciting project. Your commitment
and dedication will provide health-care professionals with the
best facility possible to help heal, cure and support patients and
their families in our community.

Site preparation will begin immediately and construction will
take more than three years. Substantial completion will be in
late 2012 with the doors of the state-of-the-art facility
expected to open to patients in 2013.

Gear Up For Cardiac
10th Annual Run for the General raises an unprecedented
$30,000 for the urgent needs of Cardiac Care
The sun was shining in west St Catharines on May 3rd as 290 runners and walkers (some of them
children) laced up for the “10th Annual Run / Walk for the General”. Funds from this years’ event
will be directed toward the purchase of a portable echo-machine for the Cardiac needs of SCGH.
We were pleased to introduce Paralympian Darda Sales as our special guest at this years’ event.
The top corporate team was Hartzel Rd. Home Hardware ($2,652) led by Team Captain Joseph
Mazachowsky; top community team was Survive-ER ($1,627); top individual pledge earner was
Sharon Francis ($1,491). Thanks to Zach Soccio-Marandola and his family for participating.

For the General
NHS Supporters - Dr. Amit Mehta and Bala Kathiresan,
both of the Niagara Health System, lace up at the
Run for the General.
With over 60 participants, the 6th Annual "Spin for the General"
enjoyed another successful year, raising $13,000 in support of
Cardiac Care capital equipment needs of our hospital.
Hosted by The Club at White Oaks for 6 years, the "Spin for the General"
has helped raise over $65,000 for various departments at the General,
including the Operating Room, ICU, Oncology, Physiotherapy and Mental
Health Departments.
Participants collected pledges from family, friends and co-workers in
support of the St. Catharines General Hospital Foundation. The top
pledge earners were Bill Heelis ($3,000), Dr. Joseph Pino Carriero ($1,000)
and Alex Novis ($695.)
This years "Spin for the General" included four spin classes led by favorite
White Oaks Instructors and special "Celebrity" Guest spinners. Celebrity
guests included Kimberly Ribble-Orr, Judo Champion from the Canada
Games along with Chris Critelli, Head Coach of Women's Basketball at
Brock University, Rick Dykstra, MP for St. Catharines and Ted Luciani,
Deputy Mayor, City of Thorold.

Treadwell Grants a Wish for SCGH
“Our Wish is Your Command”
When Stephen Treadwell received the latest SCGH Foundation publication he decided to spring
into action by hosting a special dinner at his restaurant, Treadwell Farm to Table Cuisine in Port
Dalhousie on March 27, 2009.
With 95 guests in attendance, this incredible event raised over $20,000 in support of urgent patient
equipment needs at the SCGH. Treadwell Farm to Table has always been active in supporting
various charities in the city, but this goes beyond what Treadwell has done in the past. Delicious food
and wine was provided by Stephen’s suppliers. Service staff donated their time for the event.

The Gift of Generosity
You could say that Al & Marie Kordos are passionate about improving
the health-care at the St. Catharines General. For over 20 years, Al &
Marie have devoted large chunks of their time and energies to raising
funds to purchase state-of-the-art equipment for our hospital.
In 1989, Al & Marie were the driving force behind launching the highly
successful HELPP Lottery program which has raised an outstanding $1.7
million toward the purchase of critical patient care equipment for the
Maternal Child & Family Centre, Operating Room, Emergency, Surgical,
Diagnostic Imaging & Cardiac Investigative Units.
In the course of their busy lives and many commitments, Al & Marie have
made a conscious effort to contribute to their community through
volunteering. Al sells HELPP Lottery tickets at least three times per week
and is always willing to cover vacancies in the schedule. Currently,
Marie is the President of the St. Catharines General Hospital Ladies
Auxiliary and has been an active member for 46 years.
Volunteers like Al & Marie are in many ways the heart of The St.
Catharines Hospital and the Foundation. Whether it's a helping hand,
useful feedback or friendly conversation the Kordos family truly make a
difference.

Gus and Amiel are truly remarkable volunteers who have brought strong
leadership and motivation to our community. They have directed
proceeds from their annual Golf Tournament year after year. As well, the
SCGH Foundation was the recipient of memorial donations in honour of
Gus' mother Sally Vogiatzis, who died of cancer in 2003.
We would like to extend our most sincere thanks to Gus Vogiatzis, Amiel
Chios and their families. Their concern for people is consistenly
demonstrated by their efforts to raise funds for our hospital.
Nurse’s Memory Lives On
Family and friends were pleased to honour the memory of Rochelle Deeney
by purchasing a padded glider rocking chair and a beautiful Catherine
Simpson print for the Paediatric department. Rochelle was a dedicated
Paediatric Nurse at the SCGH who passed away on April 13, 2008.

Trauma Stretchers
Arrive in the ER
The SCGH Foundation is pleased to announce the arrival of two trauma
stretchers for the Emergency Department purchased in memory of Dr.
Ken Park. Dr. Park was a highly skilled physician who joined the Emergency
and Family Medicine departments at the SCGH site in 1992. Thank you to
our caring community, whose donations made this urgent need a reality.

Heart Function Clinic
Services are a bright addition to the SCG
2007 marked a new beginning for patients living with heart failure in
the Niagara Region. The Jesse E. Hecker Heart Function Clinic focuses
on outpatient treatment and monitoring patients living with chronic
heart failure.
The clinic has experienced tremendous success since it's opening in
2007. With a caseload of over 110 patients, the Cardiologists and Scott
Gibson, NHS Nurse Practitioner help patients by monitoring their
lifestyle, medications and referral to appropriate services.
ER Nurses, Marion Vermeer, Christine Hollingham & Jodi Morneau
were grateful to receive two trauma stretchers for the Emergency
Department purchased in memory of Dr. Park.
The Heart Function Clinic is dedicated to the memory of Jesse E. Hecker,
a life long resident of St. Catharines who was committed to improving
health-care. We are truly grateful to Jesse, his daughter Mary and our
community for making these services available to those living with
chronic heart failure.

St. Giles Supports
New Healthcare Centre
We are thrilled to announce a recent donation totalling
$10,000 over 3 years from the St. Giles Presbyterian
Church. The congregation's generous contribution will assist
the Chaplaincy in their ministry activities at the New Healthcare
Centre.
Shopping Spree at
the Book Depot
In February, the Book Depot generously donated $2,500 in books to the
Paediatric, Mental Health, Oncology, Palliative Care and Chaplaincy
departments at the SCG. Representatives from each department enjoyed a
shopping spree at the Book Depot's retail store on Welland Avenue in St.
Catharines. The books are very much appreciated and help brighten the
spirits of our patients and their families while they are healing. Thank you
for your kindness and generosity.

Smiles To Paeds
Students at St. Denis of the Niagara Catholic District School Board
were hard at work preparing 30 Easter baskets for patients in the
Paediatric department. The Easter baskets were a perfect remedy for
our patients, who wore bright smiles throughout their stay. Thank you
St. Denis, for your generosity and support!
Cynthia Johnson, RN was overwhelmed by the success of this year's
Bears That Care campaign as Niagara This Week representatives,
Heather Dolan and Rosa Zernikel presented stuffed bears and
passes to Bird Kingdom to the Paediatric department.
St. Denis teachers, Patty O'Rourke and Heather Lavell were proud to
present Dr. Parminder Brar, Paediatrician, with the Easter baskets to
help cheer up patients during the holidays.
Project Linus Volunteers Warms Our Hearts
Students at Ferndale Public School have not only mastered making
blankets and afghans, they have also learned the value of kindness.
This year, volunteers, otherwise known as "blanketeers", were proud to
lend security, warmth and comfort to the patients in the Paediatric
Unit by donating these hand-crafted blankets. Plans are already
underway for next year. This compassionate and ambitious group
hopes to donate 50 blankets to the SCG.

A Celebration to Remember
To commemorate Leon's 100th Anniversary, Terry Leon, President
and CEO of the Canadian furniture company traveled across the
country donating more than $1 million to community initiatives.
Included in this celebratory initiative was a needed revitalization of the
Surgeons’ Lounge at the SCGH. Leon's generosity has provided an
exceptional space that combines quality, comfort, style and
functionality. Thank you for recognizing our dedicated surgeons and
health-care professionals for their tremendous contribution to our
hospital.

Home & Hospital
In February guests enjoyed an informative home-improvement seminar
by decorating expert, Leigh-Ann Allaire Perrault. Leigh-Ann, Colour and
Design Representative for Benjamin Moore, can often be seen showcasing
her flare for colour on City TV's, City Line and was happy to share the
latest trends in home improvement using the newest paints from
Benjamin Moore. Thank you to Dunn's Bestway Furniture and Lakeport
Paints for bringing the Benjamin Moore "Define Design Your Home" to
our community.

Focuses on the Future
To celebrate the recent amalgamation with the Ukrainian Credit
Union Limited (UCU), long-time friends at the St. Catharines
Ukrainian Credit Union generously donated $20,000 toward the
New Health-care Centre in support of the "It's Our Time" campaign.
This donation demonstrates the Credit Union's on-going
commitment to the health, economic and social well being of the
residents of Niagara.

Holiday Concert
Brings Hope
In December, the New Apostolic Church held their 2nd Annual
Holiday Concert at Brock University.
Once again our friends from the New Apostolic Church directed
proceeds from their 2nd Annual Holiday concert at the Sean
O’Sullivan Hall at Brock University to the SCGHF in support of
the new health-care complex. The New Apostolic Church
Orchestra & Concert Choir consists of 45 instrumentalists and
90 vocalists. These talented musicians come from Kitchener,
Toronto, Hamilton and surrounding communities.
The concert successfully raised over $2,500. We would like to
thank the musicians and the members of the congregation who
organized and participated in this annual event.

Get ready to ride for the Walker Family Cancer
Centre! On Sunday, September 20th, 2009 the
inaugural “Big Move Cancer Ride” will be taking place
starting at Club Roma, St. Catharines. The event is a
fundraising initiative involving a 50K and a 100K Ride
through the Niagara Region that will raise funds for
the Walker Family Cancer Centre.
In 2008, over 1,160 people were diagnosed with cancer in our Region. With
another 8,000 patients in treatment, and approximately 15,300 people
visiting out-patient cancer clinics, we need your help to raise as much money
as possible to support this urgently needed Cancer Centre. Join us as we
create an event like no other in Niagara!

The 2nd Annual Fashion Show in support
of Orthopaedic Care in Niagara was
hosted by the “On The Move” committee at
the historical Keefer Mansion in Thorold.
Models wearing the latest fashions, provided
by Verity and Nantucket, weaved their way
through the elegant rooms of the mansion.
Guests enjoyed sensational hors d'oeuvres
prepared by Executive Chef, Pascal Badaoui,
Maureen Josefchak, Caroline Gear,
fine wine, and the enchanting sounds of

Deanna Hunt. After expenses, the Fashion
enjoyed the show
