The show-stopping national finales of the 51 st annual Canadian Music
Competition take place June 19 to July 4, with the results announced on
July 5 and culminating in a gala performance on July 6, when winners will
perform with The Orchestre de la francophonie canadienne and other asyet
unannounced surprise guest artists. The competition showcases amateur
chamber and solo musicians from across the nation. Those performing
at the finales will have been selected past the first round from a pool
upwards of 750 contestants. Past winners have included Marie-Nicole

QUÉBEC ET ENVIRONS
As part of their ‘Baroque avant tout’ series, Les Violons du Roy is joined by
the La Chapelle de Québec choir and soloists soprano Hélène Guilmette,
mezzo-soprano Mireille Lebel, tenor James Taylor, and bass-baritone
Alexandre Sylvestre on June 3 and 4. The concert will feature two Baroque
religious choral works: Bach’s Lobet den Hoerrn, alle Heiden, BWV 230, one
of only six Bach motets, and Haydn’s Stabat Mater, Hob. XXbis, celebrated for
the final ‘Paradise’ movement, which becomes increasingly ornamented and
culminates in a florid coloratura soprano solo. The choir will be performing

THE AUDITION
Have you every wondered what a singer goes through during a competition?
In The Audition, filmmaker Susan Froemke takes viewers backstage
into the pressure-filled 2007 National Council Auditions at the Metropolitan
Opera. During the competition’s final week, 22 semi-finalists are reduced to
11 finalists who vie for 5 grand prizes. The film begins with a coaching session
of 22-year-old tenor Michael Fabiano, whom Montreal audiences saw in
2006 as a winner of the Jeunes Ambassadeurs Lyriques Competition.
Fabiano is portrayed as a brooding character, and as we follow him through
the competition, we met two other tenors: 25-year-old Alek Shrader who
decides at the last minute to sing the La fille du régiment aria with all 9 high
Cs, which Pavarotti made famous; and 30-year-old Ryan Smith taking his last
shot at an operatic career by singing a heart-felt Federico’s Lament from
Cilea’s L’arlesiana. Other singers include sopranos Amber Wagner and
Angela Meade, who just won the 2009 Montreal International Music
Competition. The film never over-dramatize the pressures of the competition
with slick editing: the atmosphere among the singers is quite supportive,
the comments of the jury are quite frank about the various singers’
chances, and the panel discussion following the documentary, with Renée
Fleming, Susan Graham and Thomas Hampson is spot on.

SOIRÉE DE MÉLODIES SUR L’ÎLE D’ORLÉANS
C’est dans la paroisse de Sainte-Pétronille que se déroulera un
concert de mélodies des plus illustres maîtres, dans le cadre de la 26 e
saison de Musique de chambre à Sainte-Pétronille. Ravel, Berlioz,
Mozart et Chausson ont inspiré la soprano Monique Paré, la flûtiste
Claire Marchand, le clarinettiste André Moisan, le violoncelliste
David Ellis et le pianiste Martin Dubé, qui présenteront le 2 juillet
prochain une nuit estivale des plus intimes, à l’église du village.
