Annex 1<br />

ICSUʼs Requirements of its Envir<strong>on</strong>mental <str<strong>on</strong>g>Committee</str<strong>on</strong>g>s including <str<strong>on</strong>g>SCAR</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

(as adopted by ICSUʼs Executive Board at its 88th meeting <strong>on</strong> 11-12 February 2004).<br />

• Identify emerging issues, including potential problems and soluti<strong>on</strong>s, where scientific knowledge and research<br />

can make a difference;<br />

• Catalyze and coordinate scientific research programmes in the domain of the envir<strong>on</strong>ment that:<br />

i. Expand understanding of the interacti<strong>on</strong>s between biogeochemical and physical processes and their social<br />

causes and impacts, and<br />

ii. Underpin envir<strong>on</strong>mental protecti<strong>on</strong> and c<strong>on</strong>servati<strong>on</strong>, and addresses the need for ec<strong>on</strong>omic and social<br />

development;<br />

• C<strong>on</strong>tribute to the development of m<strong>on</strong>itoring activities that are essential for documenting the state of the global<br />

system and its comp<strong>on</strong>ents;<br />

• Ensure that the relevant social sciences are fully integrated into the design and implementati<strong>on</strong> of ICSUʼs<br />

programmes;<br />

• Stimulate collaborati<strong>on</strong> with stakeholders in developing research agendas and communicating results from<br />

research of relevance to the development of appropriate policies;<br />

• C<strong>on</strong>tribute to envir<strong>on</strong>mental assessments;<br />

• Develop mechanisms to ensure that results from policy-relevant research benefit the governmental and private<br />

sectors as well as civil society;<br />

• Catalyze new types of effective collaborati<strong>on</strong>s/partnerships within the ICSU family and with others;<br />

and<br />

• Promote the synthesis and communicati<strong>on</strong> of the policy-relevant work c<strong>on</strong>ducted by ICSUʼs <str<strong>on</strong>g>Scientific</str<strong>on</strong>g> Uni<strong>on</strong>s,<br />

Nati<strong>on</strong>al Members, Interdisciplinary Bodies and Joint Initiatives.<br />
