South Carolina! We are excited that you have applied to
Carolina, and we hope you’ll join the Gamecock family!
The following is considered part of our official offer to you, so read
“the fine print” carefully to ensure a smooth transition to the University:

If you are currently enrolled in at least one college course, your acceptance
to the University of South Carolina is based upon your academic record
to date. The Office of Undergraduate Admissions must receive your final
official college transcripts (and NACES credentials evaluation if your
coursework is international) before you start your classes at USC. It’s
important to continue paying attention to your grades; if your final grades
fall below the University’s admission requirements, or if we learn that
you did not report all college course work prior to enrolling at USC, the
University reserves the right to withdraw its offer of admission to you. For

Familiarize yourself with all the requirements of your chosen degree program at
bulletin.sc.edu before you enroll at Carolina. The Undergraduate Bulletin provides detailed
information on degree and progression GPA requirements.
Last but not least, read the “Next Steps” necessary to take as an accepted student between
now and next August (see page 2). Find out what we still need from you and what you need
to do to sign up for your required orientation, monitor incoming awards if you’ve applied
for financial aid, and more…

Step 1) Immediately activate VIP, your online University account:
We have set up your official online account where you’ll complete the majority of your student transactions as a college
student at USC. Activate it now so you can sign up for student orientation and more. See page 3 for detailed instructions.
Also, a helpful handbook called “Your Student Account” is available online at www.sc.edu/admissions/apply/beenaccepted.
html – You’ll find step-by-step screen shots and details on the many uses for VIP.
Step 2) Consider your housing options:
Unfortunately, the University of South Carolina cannot guarantee on-campus housing to newly admitted transfer students.
If you are interested in living on campus, please contact the University Housing office at 803-777-4283 before applying
for on-campus housing on Self Service Carolina. It is imperative that you check space availability before applying for oncampus
housing. The on-campus housing application fee is $50 (non-refundable) and the room deposit is $100 (fees are
subject to change).
Most newly admitted transfer students live off campus, and the University of South Carolina’s Off Campus
Student Services office can assist these students. Please contact this office at 803-777-3366 or visit

Step 3) In March, sign up for new student Orientation on VIP:
Your attendance at Orientation this summer is required. You will learn about campus services and resources, meet with
your academic advisor, register for classes, receive your official student ID, and more. Orientation dates and sign-up will be
available under the “Personal” tab on the VIP website by late March.
Step 4) Placement tests:
The University of South Carolina’s foreign language and math placement tests determine your proficiency level and your
placement or exemption for each subject area. These exams are required prior to registering for math or foreign language
coursework.
Any student registering for a math course at the University of South Carolina must have a qualifying placement test
score on file. Otherwise, the course will be dropped from their schedule. For more information on math testing, visit
assess.math.sc.edu.
The Department of Language Literatures & Cultures does not automatically accept transfer credit from institutions other
than South Carolina technical colleges and USC regional campuses. Therefore, students transferring to USC from institutions
other than South Carolina technical colleges and USC regional campuses are required to take a placement exam before
beginning a foreign language course at USC. For more information about the foreign language placement tests, please
visit www.cas.sc.edu/dllc.
Step 5) Provide two documents BEFORE Orientation:
1. Complete and return the enclosed Citizenship Verification Form. Questions? Call 803-777-5555.
2. Complete and return the enclosed Immunization Form. You cannot register for classes until this form is received.

Step 6) South Carolina Residents Only: Apply for legal residency
All students who claimed South Carolina legal residency on their admissions application in order to qualify for in-state tuition
must submit the South Carolina Residency Certification Form. The University of South Carolina is required by state law to
determine the resident classification of all applicants interested in claiming South Carolina as their state of legal residence
for the purpose of accurately assessing tuition and fees. Students who do not submit the residency application will not be
considered for in-state tuition. This form is available at http://www.sc.edu/bursar/form/LR_Short.pdf.
Step 7) Submit your final college transcript:
The Office of Undergraduate Admissions must receive your final college transcript that verifies your final grades before you
enroll at the University. Failure to submit your final transcript(s) will result in a registration hold on your student account.

ACTIVATE YOUR VIP ACCOUNT
a) Visit vip.sc.edu and select “New Student User” under “Login Help” on the right.
b) *If you have never taken classes at USC before, read item #1 (a, b, and c)
and then click the “Set Your Pin” button. (Your “Pin” or “PIN” is your personal
identification number which serves as your unique User ID for VIP.)
**If you have taken or are taking any dual-enrollment courses at USC, skip to item
#3 and follow the instructions.
c) Complete the four simple steps on the Pin Set/Reset form and then click the “Reset
PIN” button. Note your nine-digit USC ID number in “Step 1” is your social security
number.
d) You will receive a provisional (temporary) PIN via the email address you listed on
your admissions application. You will be prompted to create a new PIN to access your
account for the first time. Record your PIN in a secure location. (If you ever forget your
PIN, revisit the “New Student User” section at vip.sc.edu and follow the instructions
in item #3.)
e) Once you have activated your VIP account, you may revisit it at any time at
vip.sc.edu. Click “LOGIN TO VIP” and select the “USC ID/PIN Login & First Time
Users” tab. Enter your USC identification number (your social security number) in
Step 1 and enter your PIN in Step 2. Log in in Step 4.
