WHY IT MATTERS
First time mothers who are adjusting to
being at home with an infant, parents
with toddlers who need a safe place to
explore their world, and families who are
looking for a flexible setting which can
accommodate siblings all find a place at
the Parent/Child Center.
Families new to the community and
families without extended family nearby,
find friendship and a "home away from
home" in our cozy basement. With parents
on-site and available when needed,
children engage in stimulating, developmentally
appropriate activities provided
by professional, nurturing staff.
We are proud to serve families from
all socioeconomic backgrounds, and
hope to continue to offer scholarships for
those in need.
Our Dual Language Morning continues
to be well attended, providing bilingual
activities for children and encouraging
understanding and communication
between English and Spanish speaking
parents. During the past year, parents
and staff shared their interests and talents
in our monthly "Sharing Traditions and
Talents" activities, which included holiday
celebrations, cookie decorating, tee shirt
art, Valentine making, and paper hat
decorating. Multicultural concerts celebrating
Valentine’s Day and Mother’s
Day were enjoyed by all.
Our annual participant survey confirmed
what we hear from parents every week:
nearly 100% of parents reported that
they felt more connected to other parents,
more knowledgeable about parenting
Jane Glickman, Teacher
Susan Grossman, Outreach Associate
Cathleen Hamili, Baby & Me Room Facilitator
and child development, less stressed,
and more confident in their parenting
skills.
Many parents also responded that
they come to Dual Language Morning
because it provides a unique experience
for themselves and their children. Most
felt that they gained a greater awareness
and appreciation for a different
language and culture. Building on these
successes, we hope to expand our Dual
Language programming in the future to
include more families from our diverse
community.
We are grateful for the community support
that enables us to continue to help
young families as they face the challenges
of the next 25 years.
WHY IT MATTERS
In collaboration with Oak Terrace
school, Right From The Start began an
after school activity group for school age
children. We implemented fitness, nutrition
and computer workshops. This initiative
is important to our participants who
have been very engaged in our program
because it means that they don’t have to
leave when their children turn 5. It allows
them to keep growing as individuals and
parents, benefiting from the family support
and educational activities that RFTS provides.
The fitness and nutrition program is
funded by the Weston Foundation.
We are grateful for the enthusiasm of
Pam Phillips & Cristina Pérsico who participated
in the fitness and nutrition group
planning sessions, adding their expertise to
this project. We also had the invaluable
support and guidance of Oak Terrace
principal Sandy Anderson. This is a great
achievement because it means that we
can provide the same quality of services
for school age children that we provide
for pregnant mothers and families with
children from birth to five years old. We
are now strengthening Latino families beyond
the early childhood years.
Luisa Espinosa-Lara, Administrative Aide
Alejandra Martinez, Child Care Provider
Lucrecia Soruco, Family Support Worker
Right From the Start also increased participation
by fathers to approximately 40%
during home visits, prenatal groups, Baby
and Me groups, toddler groups, parent
education groups, music and movement
groups, and social events. Because of the
inclusion of more fathers and older children,
RFTS now reaches more clients in
each family. RFTS is a great program which
continues to grow new roots in the Latino
community of southeast Lake County.
WHY IT MATTERS
During Family Network’s 25th year,
ASAP continued to experience growth.
We're proud of our nurturing home-like
environment which promotes social,
emotional, physical and intellectual
growth for children while parents complete
their work day.
Reports from parents indicate that
having their children enrolled in ASAP
means having one less worry during their
long work weeks. Our May 2008 survey
results indicated that 96% of those who
responded were extremely satisfied with
the program.
With increased space and additional
enrollment at Wayne Thomas, the staff
expanded the enrichment opportunities
ASAP provides a good
balance of educational
activities, stimulating
play choices, free time,
creativity, and homework
help if needed.
- ASAP Parent
by offering additional creative programming.
"Field trips" were planned where
head teachers Ralph Brock and Elva
Velez switched classrooms to teach
special lessons to each other’s classes.
Elva’s class loved Ralph’s science
discoveries, and Ralph’s class enjoyed
Elva’s presentations on Americana.
Fridays were special days at both
schools. Called "Fractured Fridays" at
Wayne Thomas, kids received lessons in
Chinese calligraphy, yoga, origami, and
team building games. At Indian Trail,
Friday fare included ceramic pots, indoor
"snowball fights," and mask-making.
An important component of our support
for working parents is providing care for
of each full day has been a twohour
which specializes in bringing the arts to
children in Chicago. Our kids’ lives have
been enriched by percussionists, songwriters,
poets, actors, mask-makers,
and painters.
With additional highly qualified and
enthusiastic staff, innovative programming,
the participation of interested,
involved families, and strong partnership
with School District 112, we anticipate
continued enhancement of our already
top-quality program.
Annual Report
2007-2008
CENTER DIRECTOR'S MESSAGE
This past year at Family Network was one of celebration and taking stock of
our accomplishments over the past 25 years of service to young children
and families in our community. Last October, Family Network hosted a special
luncheon honoring the outstanding vision, dedication and leadership of
our founders. Throughout the year, the work of Family Network continued to
be recognized on a variety of fronts including articles in the Highland Park
Pioneer Press and a Chicago Tribune article featuring the success of our
Right From The Start Program.
PROGRAM ACCOMPLISHMENTS
While celebrating a quarter century of service, all of our programs continued
to flourish. In fact this past year Family Network served 1,710 participants,
an increase of almost 10% from the previous year. I’m very proud of
the hard work and contributions of our excellent staff, volunteers, Board,
Advisory Committee and alumni and what they have done to strengthen our
agency. I also cannot say enough about what a great privilege it has been
for us to serve so many wonderful children and families. Here are just a few
examples of our accomplishments:
The Parent Child Center was busy last year offering a single parent group
as well as an innovative Saturday parent/child enrichment series. Seeing the
happy faces of active and engaged infants and toddlers and their parents
meeting up, building friendships and supporting one another is a testament
to why this program has been so successful over the past 25 years.
The Right From The Start program has continued to grow, offering 14 different
groups and services and expanding its base to reach school aged
children. A highly successful fitness and nutrition program was held at Oak
Terrace School. Additionally, a series of computer training classes were provided
culminating in PowerPoint presentations about each of the children’s
families which they shared with their proud parents.
The After School Activity Program also continued to expand its high quality
services. With the addition of a second classroom at Wayne Thomas
School, the program was able to clear its waiting list and serve 15 more
working families. The program also hired an additional bilingual educator
to provide greatly needed home work help for both Spanish and English
speaking children enrolled in District 112’s Dual Language program.
A LEGACY OF SERVICE
It is has been a privilege for all of us that have been associated with Family
Network over the years to serve the thousands of young children and families
that have come through our doors. In order for us to keep these exceptional
programs and services going, we need your help. Please be generous
in helping to sustain Family Network so that we can continue to be a vital
resource in our community for the next 25 years and beyond. Thank you
for your support.
