Naplan Results 2012
The National Assessment Program Literacy and Numeracy Testing Program (NAPLAN) held in May
this year assessed students of Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 in English and Mathematics.
The results of the tests have been mailed to families early this week. The results provide information
about your son’s progress in English and Mathematics and should be viewed together with
information received through school reports and parent teacher interviews. The report provides
valuable information, it is important to remember that this is only one form of assessment and
therefore only provides a snapshot of progress in English and Mathematics on the day of testing.
Additional information on NAPLAN testing can be accessed from the Victorian Curriculum and
Assessment Authority website at www.vcaa.vic.edu.au. Should you have any further queries,
please do not hesitate to contact me via email (pthompson@sbc.vic.edu.au) or phone 9289 1148.
St Bernard’s Social Justice Network
The newly formed St Bernard's Social Justice Network (SBSJN) is swinging into action! Recently Lori
Cafari and Deborah Njegac visited and participated in the tutoring of students at the Edmund
Rice Refugee and Community Refugee centre. Lori (left top) has been attending for a number of
weeks and Deborah (left bottom) recently drove the school van to St Albans and worked with St
Bernard’s Year 10 students tutoring primary aged children. Catherine Pallot, attended the Footscray St Vincent De Paul Soup
Van last night as a precursor to the College increasing their involvement on the van in Term 4 and beyond.
Perhaps you too would like to be involved in the tutoring of primary aged needy students or participate on the soup van? If so
please feel free to contact us. The SBSJN is open to new ideas and would welcome new people to the group. We are keen to
support the above programs but very open to new suggestions in finding ways to work for justice.
Should you be interested in being involved in the SBSJN, please feel free to contact me at the College,
bdouglas@sbc.vic.edu.au 9289 1113 or Nikki Deighton at nikki@dk2.com.au SBSJN’s next meeting is Tuesday October 16th in the
Nauiyu Nambiyu is a remote Northern Territory community of approximately 500 people located 220
km’s south of Darwin on the Daly River. Each year the College takes a group of 12 students and 2 staff
to this Aboriginal community for an experience of culture, the land and to meet and interact with other
Australians living a very different life to the city context of Essendon/Keilor. Priority is given to students in
Year 11, 2013. All Year 10 homerooms have been spoken to in recent weeks about this unique
opportunity and your son should have received an introductory letter, itinerary and expression of interest form. Those intending
