“Achieving Excellence by Learning and Doing”
From The Principal
Last Wednesday the College won the Associated Catholic Colleges
Cross Country Championship (pictured). Usually such a result would be
noted in the sport section of the newsletter or perhaps, at best, in the
final paragraph or two of the Principal’s report. Today I headline this as
the final piece of a remarkable achievement for St Bernard’s.
St Bernard’s now holds the 2012 ACC Swimming, Athletics and Cross
Country shields, a feat that has never been accomplished in ACC history.
Indeed, the closest any school has come to achieving the treble has
been Parade College, who, in 1992 won the Swimming and Cross
Country and tied with St Bernard’s in the Athletics. It is a great credit to
the staff and students involved in these three teams and I hope that they
feel truly proud of their place in the history of the Association.
As I reflect on this achievement, it strikes me that often when schools have been particularly
strong in one area of curriculum or extra-curricular activity it has often been at the cost of
another. This is certainly not the case in 2012. This week the annual Spring Concert was held
showcasing an impressive array of musical talent among the students. Earlier in the term we
displayed the talents of students in the critically acclaimed production of “Jekyll and Hyde”. The Arts continue to thrive in
conjunction with sport.
The College ministry program also continues to thrive and the work of the Eddie and Bernie team is making a difference in the
lives of many. The College is faithful to the EREA Touchstones of Liberating Education, Gospel Spirituality, Inclusive Community
and Justice and Solidarity in all aspects of our work with our young people.
Last week we held a gathering of all Year 12 students for the annual father / son night. The gathering was the first of a series of
occasions marking the end of the boy’s journey at St Bernard’s. I am grateful to Natham Raco, William De Nardo who spoke
to the group about their relationship with their fathers and their gratitude for the support of their families.
The night was an opportunity to acknowledge some of the successes of the class of 2012 who have made an outstanding
contribution to the College. It was also an opportunity to provide guidance about safety and enlist the support of parents in
ensuring a safe and productive end to the school year. The group have undertaken, with the support of their families, to
change the culture that has often surrounded the end of the Year 12 year at the College. Part of this culture has included the
acceptance that a large scale, public, alcohol fuelled gathering is an appropriate, inevitable and acceptable rite of
passage at the end of ones schooling at St Bernard’s. The Class of 2012 have vowed to eradicate this behaviour from their
celebrations and set the benchmark for all future St Bernard’s Year 12 students.
This week the election of Senior Student leaders for 2013 was completed. I am delighted to announce the appointment of
Luke Rocca as College Captain and Vice Captains Patrick Comerford (Ministry), Michael Marinelli (Arts) and Sam Woods
(Sport). These boys will lead a strong College Student Council of Edward Arthur, Ricardo Centofanti, Anthony Crocitti, Keenan
Gatens, Zach O’Halloran, Timothy Rose, Marcus Di Sipio, Christopher Galle, Jarrod Grech, Michael Healey, Maxim Jaggard,
Jack Lynch, Luke O’Leary, James Portelli, Jack Stephens and Jameson Trainor
Best wishes to those students who will be travelling to Italy to visit our sister school in Treviso as part of our language program
during the Term Holidays. We trust that the
experience will be enjoyable and helpful in your
Italian studies.
I wish everyone a safe, restful and restorative break
and look forward to students and staff returning re
energised at the start of the final term.
Best Wishes
Tony Paatsch
Health Alert
There has been once case of Slapped cheek disease and one case of shingles reported from the
junior school in the last week. Below are two links to websites that explain both of these infectious
diseases.
http://www.betterhealth.vic.gov.au/bhcv2/bhcarticles.nsf/pages/slapped_cheek_disease?open
http://www.betterhealth.vic.gov.au/bhcv2/bhcarticles.nsf/pages/Shingles
Given that there are two pregnant staff members and a large number of women who volunteer in
the canteen each day, we are very thankful to the parents who reported this to the school. If your
son is ill and displays any of the symptoms of either diseases please notify the relevant year level
coordinator and ensure your son stays away from school during the early stages of the disease.
The Strand Campus Assembly
At our recent Strand Assembly the following boys were recognised for their service and contributions to the College:
Year 7 Awards: Academic: Patrick Kennedy Service: Liam Hart-Hobson Culture: Angus Catoggio Sport: Dylan Lombard
Year 8 Awards: Academic: Harrison Pound Service: Lucas Incantalupo Culture: Damian Hughes Sport: Alex Sykes
Year 9 Awards: Academic: Lewis Gauci Service: Daniel Beasley Culture: Kevin Mai Sport: James Lew
Things we can do to increase resilience in our boys (Source: Andrew Fuller):
1.Give up saying ‘I’m busy’ or ‘I’m not bad’ in response to the question ‘How are you?’ By saying this we teach our boys that
we don’t have time for them!
2.Have your son set BIG, HAIRY AUDACIOUS GOALS so that they can live a dream. You can’t get extraordinary outcomes from
ordinary actions! Rules for BHAG’s
•Anything is possible
•Nothing is easy
•When things get difficult, remember rule 1.
•When things are easy, remember rule 2.
3.“You must be the change you wish to see in the World” – Mahatma Gandhi
4.It is crucial that your son sees that you do morally compelling work!
5.Help your son differentiate between ‘Fair Weather Friends’ and ‘True Friends’.
6.Assist your son to avoid thoughts that ‘think us’. There are TWO that are particularly destructive;
•The Bravery Robber – “If I get this wrong it will be a disaster”
•The Contentment Robber – “Yes I did it well but I could have done it better”.
7.Sleep More! Ensure your son has an environment that allows him to sleep away from TV’s and computers, mobile phones and
other electronic devices.
8.Be a reciprocator and your son will be one too - "Why are you unhappy? Because 99.9 percent of everything you think, and of
everything you do, is for yourself--and there isn't one” - Wei Wu Wei
One of the greatest concerns in our society is that we are becoming more and more
PASSENGERS rather than PARTICIPANTS. E.g. Everest walkers walk past a dead body
on their trek to achieve their goal. Hundreds of people watch as a man is beaten by
a group of young men.
9.Provide your son with plenty of feedback. It doesn’t need to be evaluative. It can
be as simple as “I notice that you…”
10.Provide opportunities for your son to ritualise his anger. This may be in the form of
sporting activities.
11.Teach your son to understand that events are open to multiple interpretations. The
Johari window highlights the fact that there are rooms/windows of our personality
that we are not aware of and others are. Awareness of this window is crucial for
young adolescents.
Naplan Results 2012
The National Assessment Program Literacy and Numeracy Testing Program (NAPLAN) held in May
this year assessed students of Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 in English and Mathematics.
The results of the tests have been mailed to families early this week. The results provide information
about your son’s progress in English and Mathematics and should be viewed together with
information received through school reports and parent teacher interviews. The report provides
valuable information, it is important to remember that this is only one form of assessment and
therefore only provides a snapshot of progress in English and Mathematics on the day of testing.
Additional information on NAPLAN testing can be accessed from the Victorian Curriculum and
Assessment Authority website at www.vcaa.vic.edu.au. Should you have any further queries,
please do not hesitate to contact me via email (pthompson@sbc.vic.edu.au) or phone 9289 1148.
Nauiyu Nambiyu, Daly River Northern Territory Experience 2013
Nauiyu Nambiyu is a remote Northern Territory community of approximately 500 people located 220
km’s south of Darwin on the Daly River. Each year the College takes a group of 12 students and 2 staff
to this Aboriginal community for an experience of culture, the land and to meet and interact with other
Australians living a very different life to the city context of Essendon/Keilor. Priority is given to students in
Year 11, 2013. All Year 10 homerooms have been spoken to in recent weeks about this unique
opportunity and your son should have received an introductory letter, itinerary and expression of interest form. Those intending
to apply, or unsure, should attend the Information Session in the College Boardroom 6.30-7.30pm Tuesday October 23. No need
to RSVP. If you and your son cannot attend the information session further enquiries can be made to David Sutton at
