“Achieving Excellence by Learning and Doing”
From The Principal
The Opening Mass of the school year was held on Wednesday with
Fr Christian Fini OMI as Celebrant. It was wonderful for the students
to be led in their Eucharist by such a dynamic young man. Many
staff and parents noted that the attention of the students and their
engagement with the liturgy was exemplary. As part of the
ceremony the new student council was invested and each boy
presented with his embroidered blazer.
A week prior, the annual academic assembly was held. Former
student, Dr Mark Rose, returned to the College to address those
present. Dr Rose is a Gunditjmara man and we believe he was the
first indigenous graduate of St Bernard’s. He is currently Chair of
Indigenous Knowledge Systems at Deakin University. A video of Dr
Rose’s address is available on the College Website. At this gathering
we welcomed back the Year 12 subject award winners and the top ten academic achievers
from 2010. They received awards, along with Year 11 award winners and the Dux of each year
level. A list of award winners can be found at the conclusion of this newsletter.
Another major undertaking last week was the Year 7 Camp. This is an important opportunity for
the students to get to know their classmates and was a wonderful success again this year. Sincere
thanks to Year 7 Coordinators Charlene Landvogt and Lucy Vassallo and the Year 7 teachers who
attended for their efforts in providing such a positive experience for the students.
Thank you to the many families who attended the year level information nights held during the
last two weeks. In speaking to each of the gatherings, I emphasised the importance of
communication between home and school. We continue to work hard at this. Increasingly the
College website is the mechanism used for providing and accessing important information and in
the coming weeks, families will be sent information on how to access and utilize the new “parent
portal”. I thank Mark Reedy for his work in developing this important initiative.
Congratulations to our Swimming team on their performance in the ACC carnival last Friday
night. The result was a creditable 3rd behind Whitefriars and Mazenod., who snared their first ever
ACC swimming aggregate win. The team camaraderie, the behaviour of the students and the
way they performed in the pool was outstanding. Thank you also to those swimmers who trained
hard but did not get a swim on the night and, of course, to coaches Bernadette Kirkwood, Carol
Iannazzo and Chris Mannix for their tireless efforts in preparing the team. I also acknowledge the
efforts of the cheer squad. They were certainly the most vocal, passionate and well prepared.
On Wednesday March 2 the annual Father and Son games night will be held. It is a wonderful
community event and I hope many of you are able to be involved.
Best Wishes
Tony Paatsch
Please remember in your prayers
Gesualdo Farfalla, grandfather of Luke Pupillo 8E and Mary Pearse, grandmother of staff member Cameron Evans.
Father/Son Games Night:
A reminder to all families that our annual Father & Son Games Night will be held next Wednesday evening from 6.30pm –
8.45pm. A letter was sent home via your son so if you haven’t received it yet can I suggest you take a deep breath and delve
into the far corners of his school bag. If you are still unable to locate it you can download it from our College website. Refer to
the link in Webnews.
It should be a fun night. Fathers, Step Fathers, Guardians, Grandfathers, Uncles, Brothers or Significant males are welcome to
team up with the young man of the household. On arrival at the Pavilion you will be able to locate the activities that you have
chosen and have been assigned to. A BBQ dinner is available free of charge at 7.30 between activities. A raffle will be drawn
9D at Santa Monica:
On Monday and Tuesday I visited 9D at Santa Monica and found all the boys preparing for their
overnight mountain bike ride. No doubt they will come home this weekend with many stories of
their experiences. Next week is their final week of the program with their expedition and I’m sure
this will prove to be a great finale to the program. During the visit I was amazed by the care and
expertise provided to the boys by Mark, Mic, Peter, Jordan and of course Judy.
Teenagers and Sleep :
During puberty and into early adulthood, melatonin, (the hormone that tells our brains to switch
off and become sleepy) is produced later in the evening. Despite getting to sleep later,
adolescents still need 9! hours of sleep so they may be difficult to rouse and sleepy in the
morning. If students are woken too early, they miss crucial REM sleep.
Experts believe that adolescents are accumulating a sleep deficit of approximately ten hours
each week. The stress hormone, cortisol, increases in sleep-deprived individuals and increases
feelings of stress and anxiety.
To ensure adequate amounts of sleep, try the following sleep hygiene and regular, healthy sleep
patterns:
• Use bright light to help you wake up (open curtains or turn lights on)
• Exposure to natural light (outside) in the morning and darkness at night
• Avoid caffeine (coffee, tea, Coke and chocolate) after lunchtime
• Use activity to stay awake if you are tired during the day
• Avoid computer games, excitement, bright lights and noise at night
• Catch up sleep on the weekends by going to sleep earlier rather than sleeping in until lunchtime
which disrupts your body clock
• Warm milk drinks at night help to induce sleep (it’s not a myth!)
• Introduce quiet music, relaxation exercises and unhurried activities
• Use gentle exercise such as yoga or stretching to relax and unwind
• Have a warm (not very hot) bath just before bedtime
• Establish a regular routine before bed and stick to it
• Keep your bed for sleep – don’t try to study on your bed as it is important that your brain associates bed as the place where
you sleep
• Read or listen to quiet music for a short time when you get to bed
• If you are not asleep after about 15 minutes, get up and quietly potter about until you feel sleepy.
Tips for Computer use at home
These are suggested guidelines for computer use at home. More information can be obtained from
http://www.cybersmart.gov.au/
Tip #1 Communication
Have a conversation with your child about how important it is to communicate only with those people who they know and trust.
Tell them never to give out personal details nor leave that information on social networking sites such as Facebook or Twitter. If
they receive any communication that is threatening or abusive then discourage any response of any sort. Encourage your child
to be courteous at all times with all communication on the internet.
Tip #2 Keep it in plain sight
Keep computers in open areas where you can view what the computer is being used for – eg study or common desk area. If the
computer is in your child’s room then make sure the door is left open. While this may seem an invasion of privacy for teenagers,
this is balanced against parental need to ensure the physical and emotional wellbeing of their children. The notebook computer
is best left on the kitchen bench overnight – not in their bedroom.
Testing at Year 7 and Year 10
Over the past few weeks students in Year 7 and Year 10 have been tested on comprehension skills using ACER diagnostic tools.
Year 7 have been doing the PAT-R Comprehension test and Year 10 do a TORCH test. These diagnostic tools support teachers
own observations and help us to determine ways we can support the learning of your son at St Bernard’s College. In addition
Year 7 have been doing the PAT-Maths test that assesses basic Maths skills. These tests are a ‘snapshot’ of the skills and ability of
any student and provide a small insight into a student’s ability in the particular skill of comprehension. All this is supported by our
own assessment of students. While these results will not be available for some weeks you may wish to discuss them at Parent-
Teacher interviews with your son’s teachers at the end of Term 1.
Lions Clubs’ Youth of the Year Competition
The Lions Club of Australia each year runs a national competition to determine an Australian
“Youth of the Year”. Local Lions clubs conduct their heats in February. St Bernard’s College has
been a strong supporter of this competition over the last ten years.
On Monday February 14, two of our Year 12 students competed in the Essendon Region heat.
Congratulations to Nathan Ratnam 12H (top left) and Francesco Spanti 12F (middle left).
The heat comprises an interview by a panel of three judges on a Saturday; the contestants are
asked questions about themselves and their knowledge of the world in which they live. They
are also encouraged to talk about their academic, sporting and cultural achievements. The
second part to the process is a formal dinner with the local Lions club, held at Windy Hill, and
during the dinner each contestant answers two impromptu questions (“How can discipline be
improved in schools?” and “What does Australia Day mean to you?”) and then presents a
prepared, five minute speech on a topic of their choice.
Both boys acquitted themselves exceptionally well and drew praise from the judges,
organisers, Lions members and other audience members. The boys were confident and
articulate. Nathan spoke about Global Warming and Francesco about the qualities that make
a person a success. Well done to Nathan and Francesco.
Club - Request for Coaches
Recently we have had indications from three of
our coaches that they will not be able to assist
next season, starting in late April. The teams
affected are in the Under 14 girls and Under 16
boys and are already established. The
commitment required is a training session for an
hour during the week and a game on Saturday -
probably morning but maybe early afternoon.
We have an excellent coaching mentor Andrew Feltham (’06) who is prepared to work closely with any boy who is prepared
to step up and assist and the club would provide any other support required.
This is a great developmental opportunity for someone with an interest in coaching whilst, at the same time, helping out the
Club and College. If there are any boys (preferably at least a year older than the team members they will be coaching)
please contact Kerin Moloney on 0400 789 547 or at ka66@optusnet.com.au
