the need is there, let's talk about it. If we converted the whole county to commercial
development, no one's going to come if we've destroyed our quality of life."

The board reviewed and approved a memorandum from the county manager and county attorney
regarding the additional costs of the county's 800 megahertz radio system. The memo answered
questions about the $1.6 million maintenance contract that accompanied the Motorola system.
Staff reported two instances where the board was informed about the extra costs associated with
the system, but only once where a dollar figure was actually identified. It also was reported that
county staff was aware of the potential maintenance costs before the contract was signed and that
municipalities were informed they would be responsible for those costs in the system's fourth
year of operation.
County commissioners said they would discuss a funding source for those maintenance costs at a
future meeting.
