This guide is filled with data that
should provide you with reasonably
accurate suspension settings.
However, your riding style, the terrain you ride in, and your
personal preferences regarding ride quality are all important
considerations that may cause you to want to set your bike up
differently. Go right ahead. This guide is a good reference, but
don’t feel that you ABSOLUTELY HAVE to run the settings we
recommend. Feel free to experiment. If you really mess things up,
you can always set things back to the guide recommendations
and start over again.
But before you go hog-wild on the suspension, make sure that
everything else is in order. There are a lot of tiny little things that
can have a major impact on how your bike handles:
Check your tire pressure! If you weigh 125 pounds, you probably
don’t need to run 50psi in those tires. Likewise, if you’re twice
that weight, it might not be such a good idea to roll with 20psi.
Using a gauge, and getting used to how your tires feel at different
pressures, is one of the most important AND least expensive
aspects of your bike’s handling.
Tighten your quick releases! (if your bike has them) There is
no black art to QR skewers. They are simple cams that need
to be tightened the right amount to hold your wheels in place
correctly. Loose QR skewers can make your bike feel wiggly and
poor handling, at best. At worst, they can make your wheels try
to fall off. Not good. Make sure your wheel is all the way in its
dropout, centered, and tight. A QR is properly tightened when it
takes a firm enough pressure from your hand while closing it to
leave an imprint on your skin.
Eliminate slop! Periodically check your pivot bolts. Make sure
they are tight. Check for side-to-side play in the swingarm and
linkages, where applicable. Check your wheel bearings from time
to time as well. If tightening the pivot bolts correctly doesn’t help,
it might be time for some new bearings. Correct torque specs for
bolts are listed on our website’s maintenance pages.
Make sure everything is working smoothly! Periodically inspect
the movement of your suspension with the rear shock removed.
It should swing freely and smoothly through its travel. If it is
crunchy, or if it binds, then you need to look more closely at your
pivots. A seized bearing can make an otherwise good suspension
setup feel like garbage.

Limited Frame Warranty
Santa Cruz Bicycles will repair or replace at its option any frame
or suspension component it determines to be defective. The
warranty will be in effect for two years from the date of sale
and applies to the original owner. This warranty does not cover
shipping, disassembly, reassembly or custom finishes.
Lifetime No-Fault Replacement
Santa Cruz Bicycles will make replacement parts available to
the original owner at a minimal charge in the event of a crash or
other non-warranty situation.
