A note from the advisor
Dear Readers,
As we head into the homestretch, it’s unbelievable how
quickly the school year has gone by. This year, I decided to let
the staff choose what they think is the “Best of” at Hoover and in
City Heights. There is probably more, but what you see and read
on these pages it was the staff feels and believes is the best.
Editor-in-Chief Amber Fabros’ editorial on the old Senior
Quad was an interesting piece of Hoover history that I did not
know. Features Editor Joseline Vazquez has been very observant
of all the rich cultures that are on campus, and Sports Editor
Kevin Trinh lets us in on a great Vietnamese sandwich shop.
Yearbook Editor-in-Chief Maria Cruz has released what the
theme and cover will be for the 2013 edition of the Dias Cardinales
yearbook. I think it’s one of the best yearbooks yet!
It’s been a fun year and it’s coming to an end very soon!
Sincerely,
Seniors only
The best place in Hoover High School,
in 1931 for seniors, was the senior courtyard.
Before all the demolitions of the
school to put in earthquake resistance,
seniors had their own place in the school
that was their very own. Only seniors
were allowed in the courtyard. It was
also the place where the statue that is
now in the library of the “Girl Reading”
was. The courtyard I believe was near
the center of the school, and an area for
the seniors.
The courtyard was surrounded by
benches, with the statue in the center.
If you were to look at picture of how
Hoover looked before it’s really different.
Very few of the buildings were kept
like the 1200 building, big gym, small
gym, part of the auditorium and a building
which is now the library.
Presently, we no longer have the senior
courtyard. Senior hill was created
to replace the demolished courtyard. As
years went by the senior hill is no longer
just for seniors and the tradition ended.
Although a number of seniors eat and
hang out on the senior hill, most seniors
don’t believe it is a place just for them
anymore, which is a shame.
A club to archive our past
Do you know anything about Hoover High’s history?
Students, and some teachers, might not but
the Archives Club is here to preserve the history
of the school.
Two years before Hoover’s 80th year anniversary
celebration in 2011, Ms. Vicky Banks and Mr.
John Michener created a video in celebration of
Hoover’s past years. All of Hoover’s staff joined
in making a digital power point called “Secrets Of
Hoover.” During this process, Ms. Banks felt an
organization was needed on campus to keep the
rich history of Hoover alive and available to others.
It was that year that Archives was created to
preserve the history of Hoover High School. The
school opened in 1930 and was established in 1931.
Since then, and over the years, some of the valuable
Hoover items were kept in the library and is now
in the process of being displayed like a museum.
Any student or staff member can go to the library
during opening hours and take a look at some of
Hoover’s history.
Acceptance for all
Gay Straight Alliance (GSA)
is a club where students promote
awareness about gay, lesbian, bisexual,
transgender issues. The
club is open to all, but most people
believe that you have to be gay to
join, but that’s not true. This club is
advised by Luah Aguire and Geraldine
O’Sullivan, Master of Social
Work interns, who want to become
therapists and/or counselors. They
want GSA to provide a safe environment
for gay, lesbian, bisexual
or transgendered students.
Students do not have to share
their sexuality. However, this is a
friendly and fun place to hang out
and talk. GSA also helps students
get out of their comfort zone and
allows students to be themselves.
Senior Julia Bandrup is this
year’s president. She has been involved
since the end of 2009, and
her experience there has been positive.
“I want GSA to be well known,”
stated Julia. “No one knows we’re
there.”
Most people on campus have
Ms. Banks recruited a team of students to become
Archive members and start the club. They dedicated
one whole year just to cleaning and organizing
all the items. Today all the Archives info goes
into a database and is categorized. They found
over 250 pictures, which were digitally scanned
and also put into the database. It is an amazing
experience to see all the memorabilia and see how
much the school has changed through the past 83
years. Anyone interested in the school’s history
should stop by and take a look at the extraordinary
display that they have created.
Hoover students have spent so much time in
building the displays, and took gentle care of every
piece. They wore gloves to protect all the old items
and to keep them in the good shape they are in right
now. The Archives Club is awesome because they
not only get to touch Hoover’s past, members are
also more knowledgeable about Hoover as well.
For more information, please see Ms. Banks in
room 1152.
Jasmine Motta~ Guest Writer
never even heard of Gay Straight
Alliance. Julia wants students who
are gay, lesbian, or bisexual to become
comfortable with who they
are.
“There was once a new kid in
school who was bisexual and
whose parents weren’t accepting,”
added Julia. “GSA was a place
where he could go and be himself.
He was comfortable sharing his issues
to someone in GSA.”
One of their annual events is
called “Day of Silence” which
is a day in which students across
the county vow to take a form of
silence to call attention to the silence
effect of anti-Gay, lesbian,
bisexual, and transgendered bullying
and harassment in schools.
This day shows respect to them
and also shows society how many
people support LGBT youths and
lets them know it’s okay to speak
up. GSA is a great club that meets
every Tuesday at lunch in room
V2. It’s a safe place for everyone
who shows up.
Best of Hoover...
Avid learners
The best thing about Hoover is
that it provides us with great opportunities
to help us succeed. As
a senior, this is very important to
me because all of these resources
are helping me get a step closer to
reaching my future goals.
The AVID program here at
Hoover builds your study and academic
skills and helps you get into
college. I know that during my four
years in the AVID program, it has
helped me tremendously by getting
me college prepared and has helped
me become more secure in my abilities
as a future college student. Right
now Mr. Ted Hernandez and Mr. Bill
Navickas are working one on one
with every senior AVID student to
help us with our financial aid and
Diversity rocks!
scholarships.
Seniors here at Hoover also have
the opportunity to apply to exclusive
scholarships that are only offered to
Cardinals. I recently applied for the
Stephen Effron Scholarship and because
this is only offered to Hoover
students, it increases my chances of
winning.
We also have the College Avenue
Compact, which guarantees admission
to SDSU if you maintain a 3.0
G.P.A and complete all your A-G
requirements. This partnership is
amazing because it gives all the seniors
here the chance to be able to
go to college.
These are just a few of the best
things about Hoover.
Joseline Vasquez
~ Features Editor
I am proud to say that the best
thing at our school is the diversity.
Students from all over the world
with different ethnicities attend
Hoover. This is a huge benefit for
us because not only do we open our
minds to other cultures but we also
overcome racism and understand
how we are all the same, just a little
different.
Many would say that there might
possibly be problems because of the
different cultures at Hoover, however
there are rarely any problems.
No one is excluded because of his or
her skin color or beliefs.
“I like the diversity unlike my previous
high school,” shared sophomore
Thuy Van. “ All races get together.”
There are about 30 different languages
at Hoover, thanks to the
different cultures. Some of the languages
include Vietnamese, Somali,
and Khmer.
We get to meet exciting people
and this prepares us for the future
where we’re going to work with
different people. Hoover is unique,
opened and mixed, that’s something
not many kids have at their
high schools. We are very lucky to
be here.
Success in a compact
I think the best thing at Hoover is
all the programs here. Many students
don’t realize how lucky we are to have
many clubs, programs, and partnerships
with other companies. Many
schools don’t have the same programs
at Hoover and are not given the same
opportunities students have here. This
is why students should take advantage
of these beneficial programs.
In the future, being involved in a lot
of programs and clubs that deal with the
community and school can look really
good on a resume and college applications.
People in the real world want to
see that students are active in helping
the community and are interested in being
a part of something more. Also, the
programs here can give you experience
for future jobs, so it won’t be such a
hassle training or looking for a job.
A partnership program at Hoover
that has helped me this year is College
Avenue Compact. College Avenue
Jamie Bermejo~ Staff Writer
Compact is a program here at Hoover
in partnership with the City Heights
Educational Collaborative, Price Charities,
SDUSD, and SDSU that offers
Hoover students guaranteed admission
to SDSU upon successful completion
of the CAC requirements. College Avenue
Compact ensures that every student’s
progress is monitored and they
keep students on task so they are on the
right path to college.
I can always count on the CAC
counselors when I have any questions
or need help on certain applications.
Without CAC I would have been off
track with all my important college
deadlines, SAT/ACT tests, and signing
up for my ELM and EPT. This is only
one of the programs at Hoover that is
really beneficial for all students, especially
during senior year. And there
are many more programs, which you
can find more information about in the
counseling office.

Legendary Lion Dance Association is one of the
best lion dance organizations in San Diego. It was
established for people who are interested in lion
dance, instruments (cymbals, gong, and drums) and
Kung Fu.
Practices are every weekend at the Chu Bah Temple
on the corner of Chamoune and University Ave.
The founder of this organization is Tony Nguyen.
Tony is a Hoover alumni from the Class of 2012.
He started with the idea of legendary lion dance in
the 6th grade and he established Legendary in 2000.
This team is great! They have very few members
but are hardworking and very good at what they do.
They are a non-profit organization, so all the money
they make goes towards new lions and equipment.
All the members participate out of the fun, love and
joy of lion dancing. It is also a way to stay with
cultural history and traditions.
The association will work with you in order to
have the best, most memorable performance. They
specialize in weddings, grand openings, blessings,
schools, ceremonies, restaurants, temples, parties,
gatherings, reunions, etc. You name it, they will
make it happen. They will give you quality performances
at the reasonable price.
Do you want an explosion of flavor in your stomach? If so, you
should consider Saigon Sandwiches & Deli, the tastiest Vietnamese
sandwiches in City Heights by far. Saigon Deli is the best
because they’ve been in business for over 25 years so they’ve
been a part of City Heights’ history for quite some time.
Saigon Sandwiches & Deli is located at 4133 University Avenue
between Marlborough and 41st Street. If you want a quick
delicious breakfast or lunch, come through and get yourself a
sandwich. Saigon Deli offers a variety of sandwiches and drinks as
well; they specialize in traditional Vietnamese sandwiches that are
put together on toasted French baguette. Some of the sandwiches
they offer are; chicken, bbq pork, special combination of secret
meats and spices, and even an omelet sandwich. The drinks you
can buy are; fruit smoothies, Vietnamese coffee, or just everyday
soda drinks. Their prices won’t punch a hole through your wallet
because everything is reasonably priced and affordable. The only
drawback is the store only accepts cash.
Everything at the store is made fresh and always ready to go in
a matter of minutes. The head cook cranks out orders as fast as
she can. I highly suggest this place because the environment is
very friendly and welcoming. The shop has a staff of three, and
they will fulfill any order that you would need. They are open
from 7 am to 5:30 pm Monday through Saturday and 7 am to 4
Hoover High has been gifted with
one of the best basketball teams in
San Diego and they have definitely
left their mark
on Hoover this
year for being
the first basketball
team
in Hoover
history to win
31 games in a
season along
with winning
CIF for the
first time since
2009 despite
multiple appearances
at
CIF. Winning CIF secured a spot in
state playoffs for our boys’ basketball;
they made it to the Elite 8 before
losing to Redondo Union in a very
heated game. However, although
Hoover is known predominantly as
The best thing about Hoover High
School is all of the different programs.
One of my favorites would have to be
Cardinals Interact.
Cardinals Interact helps you grow
as a person. You join when you’re a
sophomore and you keep going to
programs until you’re a senior. They
help you learn about college, like if
you want big classes or small, if you
want a large campus with major sports
or a small campus with strong academics.
They just want to make sure you
find what you are looking for. C.I. also
teaches you how to apply for scholarships.
They have many connections
around City Heights and with The International
Rotary Club.
The Rotary Club helps by giving
you information when you need it.
They give C.I. a special peek at all the
opportunities in the world. I believe
a basketball school, we have many
other sports that have reached milestones
this past year.
Many of our teams this year made
CIF playoffs or have had players compete
in CIF
matches,
those teams
being Football,
Soccer,
Girls
Tennis, and
Wrestling.
Two great
players
from the
Girls Tennis
team
competed
in CIF and
ironically
facing each other resulting in Paulina
Perez-Flores ‘16 taking first place and
Jessenia Cabrera ‘13 taking second.
that Cardinals Interact is one of the
best because of all the different opportunities
available and all the new
people you meet. One of the major
opportunities is when you are a junior;
five students are picked to go to Europe,
all expenses paid.
If you are a freshman, you will have
to wait until next year to get an application
in the counseling office. You
go through an interview process, and
only 50 students are picked out of over
100 students who apply. If you make
it through all three years, you can apply
for a scholarship that is offered by
Cardinals Interact. They help you pick
what you might want to do in a career
and help you get to your goals in life.
All of the things above are why I believe
that Cardinals Interact is one of
the best things at Hoover High.
Our Wrestling
team
also had
two athletes
compete in
CIF, Kenneth
Moore
’15 and
Moises Garcia
’13. Our
Football
team went
to CIF playoffs
along
with our
Boys’ Soccer team who also won the
league title.
Although we’ve had many teams
that were considered great, Hoover’s
always had one team that’s been absolutely
phenomenal and is for the
most part not given enough credit.
They have won CIF for the past nine
consecutive years. Their CIF reign
Interacting a full deck of Cards!
started in 1999 and although they fell
short in 2003, they worked for their
win in 2004 and have not lost CIF
since. They are Hoover’s very own
Badminton team and it looks like
they’re looking for another championship
title because they’re record is
completely clean. They have swept
every team they’ve played so far and
I’m sure they will continue to do so.
We are very lucky to have such great
sports at Hoover.
Get your Cheetos here...and here...
Two of the best places in City
Heights, where I get my Flaming
Hot Cheetos, are Food 4 Less and
CandyLand.
Food 4 Less is a great place to buy
Flaming Hot Cheetos because they
always have a 3 for $5 sale. This
means that I get one big bag at only a
dollar seventy. Flamin’ Hot Cheetos
are my favorite chips ever, so being
able to get them this cheap makes
me really happy. Typically a bag is
$3.49 and even when it is on sale at
other stores, no one can beat Food 4
Less. I am addicted to Flamin’ Hot
Cheetos so the more bags I get, the
better. I am a really good shopper
so I know where to go to buy stuff
at a low price but good enough to
be satisfying. This is one of those
sales for Flamin Hot Cheetos, but
for almost all other “junk food”
and healthy food too, you can’t go
wrong at Food 4 Less.
Candy Land and is another great
place where I get my Flamin’ Hot
Cheetos because there I buy two
small bags and sometimes a medium
sized for my walk home. However,
at Candy Land, you can put nacho
cheese, chamoy or lime juice on
your chips at an extra charge depending
on the amount you want.
The people that own and run Candy
Land are really nice people. Candy
Land isn’t just a place for snacks,
candy, and drinks; on weekends they
also sell tacos de Borrego and turn
Candy Land into a little restaurant.
Damonte Holiday is a junior at Hoover. Damonte
is a Hoover Groover because he’s so
involved with school and what is around him.
Damonte plays football and basketball and
puts a lot of time into his athletics. Sometimes
He gives up his free time and helps out at the
recreation center; he also likes to support the
other sport players. He encourages other athletes
to do their best and practice hard so they
can become better team players.
Damonte lives by a quote from John Wooden,
who was an American basketball player and
coach, “Make Each Day Your Masterpiece.”
In the future, Damonte wants to be more of
a vocal leader and is going to have higher expectations
for himself and others. He believes
anyone can be successful and get a high GPA.
Damonte had a 3.0 and didn’t think it was high
enough. He wants a high GPA so people can
look up to him and get good grades like him
because he believes “Everyone is capable on
getting good grades all you have to do is try.”
He’s a really encouraging person and wants
to see everyone do his or her best in school. By
the end of his junior year, Damonte wants to
be a role model to the freshman and to encourage
them to do well and not get into trouble
and ruin it all. He wants people to look up to
him and to do well not only in athletics, but
academics as well.
The Hoover Boys tennis team won the Central League Tennis Championship this year with a record of 9 wins
and 1 loss. This is our first league title in 6 years. Having a league title is great but our best accomplishment
is our team GPA; it is well above a 3.0. Thank you all for your support of Hoover athletics.
