L.Van Beethoven Lithograph James Henry Lynch London, Charles Jefferys, 21, Soho Square. c.1840 Image 115 x 120 mm, Sheet 241 x 183 mm unmounted Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827), the prolific German composer whose symphonies, concertos, piano and choral music dominated the Romantic age. Beethoven studied under Joseph Haydn in Vienna before making his public debut as a virtuoso piano player in 1795. Despite the onset of deafness from 1801 Beethoven continued to compose until his death, producing some of his greatest work in his final years. (Johann Chrysostom) Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756-1791), was born in Salzburg, son of Johann George Leopold Mozart, violinist and composer at the Salzburg Court. Mozart's earliest known musical compositions date from 1761 when he was only five years old. His first public performance occurred the same year at the University of Salzburg. He toured Europe repeatedly and held positions at the Salzburg and Viennese Courts. His most famous works include the operas The Marriage of Figaro (1786), Don Giovanni(1787), Cosi fan tutte (1790) and The Magic Flute (1790). He died while struggling to complete his famous Requiem, a part of which was premiered at his own funeral mass. Mitchell, March 16th, 1837 Image 280 x 207 mm, Sheet 312 x 230 mm A print showing Duvernay as Florinda in The Devil on Two Sticks Pauline Duvernay, (1813-1894) studied at the ballet school of the Paris Opera and was the prize student of Auguste Vestris. By all reports she was a great beauty who at the time rivaled Marie Taglioni. Duvernay's greatest role was Florinda in The Devil on Two Sticks in which she triumphed at Drury Lane, in London in 1836. She retired, aged just 25, in 1837 and married Stephen Lynn- Stevens, thought to be the richest commoner in England at that time. Religious and Clerical 70. [27698] £300 The Rev. Dr. Richard Busby (1606–1695) was an English Anglican priest who served as head master of Westminster School for more than fifty-five years. 69. Crane - Chester, 1829 Image145 x 125 mm, Sheet 307 x 243 mm unmounted Niccolò Paganini (1782 – 1840) was an Italian violinist, violist, guitarist, and composer. He was one of the most celebrated violin virtuosi of his time, and left his mark as one of the pillars of modern violin technique. William Crane (died 1843) was the brother of the portrait artist Thomas Crane who was the father of the famous artist Walter Crane. [27695] £200 James Watson (c.1740-1790) was born in Ireland. As a young man he moved to London, where he studied mezzotint engraving. He became one of the leading mezzotint engravers of the day, including fifty-six plates after the paintings of Joshua Reynolds. The majority of Watson's work was produced for Sayer, Boydell and other printsellers but he published some plates himself. Watson exhibited at the Society of Artists from 1762 to 1775, during which time he was regarded as a master in his field. John Riley (1646-1691) began practising painting at a young age, which probably meant he was independently wealthy. He became a fashionable society portrait painter. At the height of his success, in the 1680s, Riley charged £40 for a full-length portrait, a considerable amount of money at this time.
