Lexicon of Centrelink terms
Tenancy in common:
Where two or more persons are entitled to the full
use of a house or a block of land but neither is
entitled to the exclusive possession of any part of
the house or the land.
It is distinguished from joint tenancy by the fact that
on the death of either of the tenants, the tenancy in
common goes to the tenant's heir, that is, the heir
becomes a tenant in common with the surviving cotenant(s).
Terminate a contract:
Bring to an end an on-going contract, for example to
work or to supply goods.
Terminate payment:
Cease payment, as the customer is no longer
entitled.
Territory:
The area under the jurisdiction of each Reciprocal
Agreement partner.
Threshold amount:
The level of income or assets where payment will be
affected under the income or assets test.
Title deed:
Legal instrument as evidence of right. Usually a
document proving someone is the owner of a block
of land and, where appropriate, the house built on it.
Totalisation:
The process of adding together the periods of
credited contributions to the other country's social
security system and/or periods of residence in order
to meet the minimum qualifying period for benefits
from either or both Reciprocal Agreement partners.
Touchscreen:
Centrelink offices have computer touchscreens that
provide details of job vacancies and Job Network
members.
Tourist visa:
A visa that allows a person to enter Australia for a
limited period. It is usually provided to people who
come to Australia for a holiday.
Trade:
Business, especially mechanical or mercantile
employment, as opposed to profession, carried on as
means of livelihood or profit. This word especially
stands for skilled handicraft, eg carpentry,
plumbing, butchery etc.
Trade union:
Organised association of workers of a trade, or
group of allied trades, formed to protect and
promote their common interests.
