Savings provision:<br />

An exception to a new piece <strong>of</strong> legislation designed<br />

to exempt people from the effects <strong>of</strong> the legislation.<br />

Savings provisions relating to investments, exempt<br />

people from the effects <strong>of</strong> investment decisions<br />

which they have made in good faith according to the<br />

provisions <strong>of</strong> social security rules in force at the time<br />

the decision was made.<br />

School fees fringe benefit:<br />

A person receives a school fees fringe benefit if their<br />

employer pays an amount to them, or to a school, for<br />

primary or secondary level education tuition. The<br />

amount may be for book or equipment fees for either<br />

a dependent child <strong>of</strong> the person or person's partner or<br />

a child <strong>of</strong> the family who is getting Newstart<br />

Allowance. The value <strong>of</strong> a school fees benefit is the<br />

actual amount <strong>of</strong> the payment.<br />

School leaver:<br />

Person who has just left secondary school and is<br />

entering the workforce for the first time.<br />

Seasonal work:<br />

Work available only at a given time <strong>of</strong> the year<br />

mainly due to factors related to climate, eg fruit<br />

picking, snow season jobs etc.<br />

Secondary earner:<br />

The member within the family, who earns the lesser<br />

income.<br />

Self Employment Development:<br />

A scheme that allows job seekers to undertake<br />

activities for market research or development <strong>of</strong><br />

business ideas that could lead to the establishment <strong>of</strong><br />

a viable business.<br />

Seminar:<br />

Short intensive course <strong>of</strong> study or meeting, from one<br />

day to a few weeks in duration.<br />

Separated:<br />

A person not living with their partner as a result <strong>of</strong> a<br />

breakdown in, or a withdrawal from the relationship,<br />

not just a physical separation. The couple are<br />

estranged and living separate lives, usually residing<br />

at separate addresses. Circumstances should be such<br />

that the separation is likely to be permanent or<br />

indefinite.<br />

Separated under one ro<strong>of</strong>:<br />

Persons previously married (legal or de facto) who<br />

continue to live in the same premises although a<br />

marriage-like relationship no longer exists.<br />

Separation Agreement:<br />

Sometimes a couple separate after reaching<br />

agreement on maintenance, financial arrangements,<br />

and who will be responsible for the children.<br />
