Salt was formerly known as "white
gold". The deposits, which have
evolved over millions of years in
Duerrenberg near Hallein, were the
treasury of the region. 2,500 years
ago the Celts mined this hidden
treasure. Prince Archbishop Wolf
Dietrich von Raitenau transformed
this treasure to its true value and let
it expand Salzburg into a magnificent
city. Today you can walk in the
footsteps of the miners through
the oldest visitor mine in the world.
The long miners' slides, the mine
rail cars and the raft trip across the
salt lake are the highlights of a visit
to the mine. The archaeological
finds from the Iron Age Celts can
then be admired in the museum.
