Advent is a special time in Salzburg. The Baroque city
turns into a dreamy Christmas fairy tale. The snow
rests upon the church spires, the streets are festively
decorated and illuminated Christmas trees adorn the
courts. The spirit is everywhere. It is not surprising
that Silent Night, the most famous Christmas carol in
Before the magic happens on
Christmas Eve and the presents
are set under the Christmas
tree, ‘Nikolaus‘ visits
young and old on 6 December.
He is accompanied by Krampus, with his furry
coat, big horns and loud bells, can be a breathtaking
sight that leaves even some naughty adults speechless.
Only ‘Nikolaus‘ with his shepherd‘s staff can curb
and dissuade Krampus from his gentle but determined
blows. Through the scent of mulled wine and roasted
almonds one quickly forgets the horrors of
Krampus with a visit to one of the numerous Christmas
markets. Let yourself be taken away with the
Yuletide spirit.
