Mozart - Salzburg

On the Mönchsberg, high above the
city, is where the Hohensalzburg fortress
sits. It is a very visible landmark and
distinctive part of the world-famous silhouette
of Salzburg. In 1077, it was
begun under auspices of Archbishop
Gebhard. Today, it is one of the largest
existing castle complexes in Europe.
Prince Archbishop Leonhard von Keutschach
converted the fort into a late
Gothic noble seat of government during
his reign. The magnificent state
rooms with Gothic carvings and ornamental
paintings testify still today to its
rich history. Also, the “Salzburger Stier“,
an organ in the tower, the clock 'roars'
can be heard all the way to
the old town and dates
from that time. From Palm
Sunday until 31 October
daily at 7, 11 and 18 the
clock “roars“. There are 58
insignias and coats of
arms commemorative of
Leonhard von Keutschach
and even the fortress
lion, the symbol of the fortress
holds the “beetroot“ coat of arms of the
Archbishop in his paws.
CASTLES
Today, the fortress is a must for all
Salzburg visitors year round. In the
medieval rooms and the courtyard
regular events take place, such as concerts
and the Advent Fortress market.
The tower offers an impressive 360-
degree panorma with views over the
city and the mountains.
