H.E. <strong>Shabdrung</strong> Ngawang Khyenrab Rinchen Paljor <strong>Rinpoche</strong><br />
Introduction: <strong>Shabdrung</strong> Ngawang Khyenrab Rinchen Paljor <strong>Rinpoche</strong>, was born in 1971 in<br />
Lo-Tsarang, Mustang, west <strong>of</strong> Nepal, into the royal family <strong>of</strong> Mustang. He is one <strong>of</strong> the<br />
successors <strong>of</strong> His Eminence Chogye Trichen <strong>Rinpoche</strong>, and lives in Jamchen Lhakhang<br />
Monastery. <strong>Shabdrung</strong> <strong>Rinpoche</strong>'s mother is the youngest daughter <strong>of</strong> the late 24 th King Jampal<br />
Tenzing Dandul and late queen Kelsang Choeden, who was the elder sister <strong>of</strong> His Eminence<br />
Chogye Trichen <strong>Rinpoche</strong>.<br />
Entering monkhood: During a visit by His Eminence Chogye Trichen <strong>Rinpoche</strong> to<br />
Mustang, His Eminence chose <strong>Shabdrung</strong> <strong>Rinpoche</strong>, the youngest son, to be ordained as a monk<br />
as he envisioned him to be a great lama in future. So at the age <strong>of</strong> six, <strong>Shabdrung</strong> <strong>Rinpoche</strong> was<br />
blessed by the hair cutting ceremony and was given the name Rinchen Paljor.<br />
At the age <strong>of</strong> eight, <strong>Shabdrung</strong> <strong>Rinpoche</strong> took his novice vow with His Eminence Chogye<br />
Trichen <strong>Rinpoche</strong> in the Lumbini Monastery and was named Ngawang Rinchen Paljor.<br />
(Ngawang is the first name <strong>of</strong> His Eminence.) From then <strong>Shabdrung</strong> <strong>Rinpoche</strong> mastered the<br />
monastic scriptural rituals and musical accompaniment <strong>of</strong> the rituals.<br />
Enthronement as Shadrung: In 1992 the previous <strong>Shabdrung</strong> Tenzing Thinley <strong>Rinpoche</strong><br />
gave up his monk hood. His Eminence Chogye Trichen <strong>Rinpoche</strong> envisioned <strong>Shabdrung</strong><br />
<strong>Rinpoche</strong> to be his next <strong>Shabdrung</strong>, and enthroned him as <strong>Shabdrung</strong> Ngawang Khyenrab<br />
Richen Paljor. Since then he had been constantly with His Eminence serving his master as well<br />
as getting precious guidance from him. Due to this close association he has been able to receive<br />
innumerable initiations, oral instructions, ritual traditions and transmission <strong>of</strong> various Buddhist<br />
teachings.<br />
In 1996, together with H.E. Gyana Vajra <strong>Rinpoche</strong>, H.E. Tulku Dorjee Denpa and Ngaglo<br />
Tulku <strong>Rinpoche</strong>, <strong>Shabdrung</strong> <strong>Rinpoche</strong> received the full bikshu ordination from His Eminence<br />
Chogye Trichen <strong>Rinpoche</strong> and His Eminence Ludhing Khenchen <strong>Rinpoche</strong> in Lumbini on the<br />
auspicious occasion <strong>of</strong> the Anniversary <strong>of</strong> Lord Sakya Pandita.<br />
Receiving Dharma Education: <strong>Shabdrung</strong> <strong>Rinpoche</strong> studied at Sakya Institute and<br />
Sakya College. He mastered all the major Buddhist Texts and graduated from Sakya College, with<br />
a Ka Chu Pa degree (Bachelor <strong>of</strong> Arts) by accomplishing the ten spiritual texts, which include the<br />
major divisions <strong>of</strong> Buddhist Philosophy.<br />
Receiving Teachings & Transmissions: <strong>Shabdrung</strong> <strong>Rinpoche</strong> had received numerous<br />
major teachings and transmissions from His Holiness Sakya Trizin, His Eminence Chogye<br />
Trichen <strong>Rinpoche</strong> and His Eminence Ludhing Khenchen <strong>Rinpoche</strong>. These included Lamdre<br />
empowerments, Collection <strong>of</strong> Tantra and Sadhana.<br />
Entering into Retreats: He conducted several major meditation retreats at Lumbini<br />
Monastery, Mustang and Jamchen Lhakhang monastery. He entered into retreats on Hevajra,<br />
Vajra Yogini, Maha Vairochana and many more under the direct guidance <strong>of</strong> His Eminence<br />
Chogye Trichen <strong>Rinpoche</strong>.<br />

Ordaining monks: He has also ordained many monks. Recently he fully ordained 30 monks<br />
<strong>of</strong> PemaTsal Monastery in Pokhara on their requests to be ordained by <strong>Shabdrung</strong> <strong>Rinpoche</strong><br />
who holds direct lineage from His Eminence Late Chogye Trichen <strong>Rinpoche</strong>.<br />
<strong>Shabdrung</strong> <strong>Rinpoche</strong> now resides in Kathmandu. As head <strong>of</strong> Jamchen Lhakhang, he continues<br />
to teach and spread the message <strong>of</strong> dharma in the path shown by His Eminence Late Chogye<br />
Trichen <strong>Rinpoche</strong> and is working tirelessly to keep the name and teachings <strong>of</strong> His Eminence<br />
alive.<br />
