Crafting a world-class center for learning
High-quality, rigorous education
requires state-of-the-art facilities
outlined in Saint Louis’ ongoing
campus redevelopment project.
The Crusade for Opportunity capital
campaign features five key initiatives:
1) campus technology,
A good number of SLS alumni
forge ahead with established
careers in Japan, China, Korea,
the Philippines, Australia, and
Taiwan. From private enterprise
to government advisors, these
overseas Crusaders thrive in
this dynamic region and continue
to nurture Marianist values
We invite news and milestones
“once a Crusader, always a
the Saint Louis tradition of
excellence in leadership and
The legacy continues to thrive
as recent Kalaepōhaku grads
shine in the 21st century: Marcus
Mariota ’11 and Matthew
Y. Lee ’11 are filling those
footsteps…a Mendoza business
major at the University of
Notre Dame, Matthew attained
a doctor in the worst way, because
at St. Louis I worked
under Harvey Chilton, trainer
for St. Louis athletic teams and
a trainer for the U.S. Olympic
team—he taught me all the
tricks of the trade. I worked
under Dr. Fred Lam in the
athletic department. When I
went to the University of Hawaii,
I wanted to study medicine
but I came from a poor
family. I was working since I
was 14. So I switched to
chemical engineering, sugar
technology. I was the only
graduate from UH in sugar
technology—part-Hawaiian—
to manage a sugar plantation.
Aloha SLS, SLAA & the entire Crusader Nation!
I trust you, the dedicated SLS ‘Ohana and SLAA membership, eagerly and energetically welcome
this newly (re-)launched, freshly (re-)formatted, and “super improved” Crusader Alumni
Newsletter as much as I and the entire Crusader Nation does. The effort put forth by your
SLS Office of Advancement and select SLAA folks (most particularly, the Publicity/Media
Committee led by Board Member, Patrick Bullard, ’81) to get this great Newsletter “up and
running” is yet another example of the successful bond which forever links our Crusader Nation
to the Slopes of Kalaepohaku. Congratulations to all who worked so hard to bring this
newsletter to the “Red and Blue” Crusader Nation.
As you enjoy each section of this fine new and improved Newsletter, always remember that
SLAA is your Association. A home away from home, if you will, where common passion, energy,
effort, commitment and loyalty to the Red & Blue Crusader Nation is displayed, embraced
and almost religiously followed on an everyday basis by all who enter, support and enjoy our
facilities, to include Crusader Lounge, the Clubhouse and SLAA’s exclusive caterer, Da
Kitchen. Now, through this highly improved Newsletter, you can enter the worlds of both SLS
and SLAA to enjoy our collective energy and passion for everything “Red and Blue”.
Be part of the fun that defines us and that is both SLS and SLAA! Join us, both upon the
Slopes of Kalaepohaku and at your SLAA Clubhouse! SLAA welcomes all SLS graduates and
friends of SLS to join SLAA as “card carrying” members. Get and stay involved with SLAA
whether it be with or on the Board of Directors, at the SLAA Committee level, or simply to
attend SLAA gatherings, meetings, and parties. No matter the level of your involvement, as a
“card carrying” member of SLAA, you’ll come away with the “chicken skin” feeling that defines
the close camaraderie and Brotherhood of all SLS graduates and members of Crusader Nation.
Named for philanthropist
Dreier whose generosity provided
the first SLAA clubhouse
on Union Street, this
Victorian mansion stood on
the site of today's SLAA
Clubhouse until faulty circuits
caused the fire that destroyed
it in 1950. Originally constructed
for sugar baron Claus
Spreckels just off Wilder Ave-
nue, it was later sold to the
early 20th-century ukulelemanufacturing
Kumalae
family, who donated it to our
Alumni Association in 1938.
Prior to moving the residence
to Isenberg Street an
entire storey was removed,
hence the open veranda in
this photo had originally
been on the second floor.

Environmental steward: Jeff Kahler ‘07
I am extremely isolated from society and civilization. There are no distractions of materialism,
politics, social issues, and economics; as a result I am able to think at a much deeper
and meaningful level. Life on an atoll is only nature; it is all that we have every single minute.
It is a humbling experience that brings the reality of life in front of your face: the
chain of life, the flow of energy, the fabric of an ecosystem. As humans we are only continuing
our destruction of these intricate interactions that will lead to an unhealthy earth.
I am beginning to put the puzzle of life together. The field is very broad for a biologist, so
hopefully, jobs are always going to be available. The key for me is to give back to the earth
in ways that directly or indirectly help the human race.
I am even more proud to be part of the Crusader ‘ohana, more thankful for those educators
and administrators who have helped shape my life, but more importantly, grateful for
the faith, religion, spirit and culture that the Marianist education of Saint Louis has helped
to instill in me.
Fr. Anthony V. Rodrigues ‘41
(From a 2011 interview with the
recently deceased Mrs. Lucille Caires,
sister-in-law of Father Anthony,
1923-2009)
“Mama used to sing this song to
him about a little boy that went
off and never came back,” almost
foretelling his future vocation
that would take him a hemisphere
away from home.
Father
Rodrigues’
Bolivia mission
received
support of
his Crusader
alumni
brothers.
Back then,
there was a
horse ranch
in Palolo valley
and he
would cut
across Palolo
stream to get
to school. “It
was an honor to go to St. Louis
College”, and Father Anthony
attended from first grade
through graduation.
“St. Louis boys had perfect penmanship,
and good pep rallies.
The drum & bugle corps was especially
well-liked.”
Rodrigues had just entered the
University of Dayton when war
broke out. “At the end of the war,
Mother told me to go to Liberty
House and get all the white shirts
you can”. Anthony was entering
the seminary.
Ordained a Maryknoll priest in
1954, he then left for Bolivia, and
later served as Army chaplain in
Korea and Vietnam. Of his years
in Bolivia, Lucille recalls that family
and friends were major donors
to his mission.
Retiring to Montana in 2003, he
served as pastor for Sacred Heart
parish in Big Stone Gap. Father
Anthony passed away in Billings
in October 2011.
