renewable. The intent is bringing ones expertise back to the islands in<br />

Criteria: Each award provides a $1000 stipend plus full tuition<br />

waiver. Fun Factory scholars may attend any campus of the University<br />

of Hawaii. Eligibility: admittance as a classified full time first year<br />

student in fall semester, a 3.5 GPA cumulative or better, SAT/ACT<br />

scores; class rank, bona fide Hawaii State resident. Financial need is<br />

not a selection criterion so FAFSA is not required. However students<br />

Competition<br />

Judged on originality, analysis, vocabulary and syntax and<br />

athletic achievement, evidence of personal motivation. Additional<br />

points will be awarded to applicants whose parent is a member of a<br />

union that is affiliated with the HUB Foundation.<br />

Criteria: Two scholarships are awarded to a dependent of a resident<br />

family of the City and County of Honolulu and two scholarships are<br />

awarded to a dependent of an employee of the Honolulu Police<br />

Department. The recipient may receive $500 each semester for<br />

four years for a total of $4000 provided that the recipient maintains<br />

Criteria: This a new Native Hawaiian <strong>Scholarship</strong> Program<br />

administered by Maui Community College that provides funding for<br />

Hawaiian students pursuing college degrees in Hawaii or on the US<br />

continent. It has two goals: Increase the enrollment of Native<br />

Hawaiians pursuing and completing post secondary degrees and<br />

increasing the number of Native Hawaiian teachers, especially in small<br />

rural communities with large concentrations of Native Hawaiians. Be<br />

Criteria: The goal of the Native Hawaiian Leadership Project<br />

(NHLP) is to assist Hawaiian student with financial need who<br />

demonstrate leadership potential to access higher education in a<br />

variety of disciplines. Beneficiaries of the grants are required to five<br />

back to the Native Hawaiian Community in the form of community<br />

service. At Least 50% of community service must be performed<br />

National Merit <strong>Scholarship</strong> Qualifying Test (PSAT); Testing for juniors<br />

in mid-October<br />

Criteria: All Juniors take the PSAT (NMSQT) test in October to qualify<br />

for this scholarship. Please consult brochures supplied to each student<br />

in preparation for this exam. Freshmen and sophomore divisions take<br />

the PSAT to become acquainted with the testing procedures and<br />

Criteria: This is a nationwide award program that presents over one<br />

million dollars in college scholarships to high school seniors across<br />

the country. In addition, one national winner will be selected to receive<br />

a $5000 Papa John “The Works” <strong>Scholarship</strong>. Students have one<br />

year to use the award at an accredited university or college of their<br />

choice. Any student with a 2.5 grade point average on a 4.0 scale may<br />

apply. The selection committee looks beyond lofty standardized test<br />

Criteria: The UH Regents <strong>Scholarship</strong>s were established to support<br />

students with a record for outstanding academic achievements. To be<br />

eligible students must meet all the following qualifications—admitted<br />

as a classified full-time first year student in the fall semester at the<br />

University of Hawaii; a grade point average of at least 3.5 in academic<br />

subjects grades 9-11, SAT combined score of at least 1300 or an ACT<br />

Score of at least 29; evidence of superior academic achievement or<br />

creative endeavor; record of academic co-curricular and community<br />

service activities; bona fide resident of Hawaii for tuition purposes at<br />

Criteria: The Sallie Mae Fund –Paying for College Program is a<br />

workshop based program that informs parents and students on how to<br />

obtain grants for education for college. Not much is known about the<br />

presentations except that the Sallie Mae presentation is based on a<br />

profile of the school that is provided by the Director of Counseling to<br />

this organization.<br />

Samoan Lumana’i Award<br />

Criteria: The Lumana’i is a program of the Oahu Association of the<br />

Hawaii Conference United Church of Christ to recognize high school<br />

seniors of Samoan descent who have distinguished themselves in their<br />

schools and community. Areas of performing arts, visual arts,<br />

community services, mathematics, media and technology, military<br />

science, and science. Section is based on grades, outstanding<br />

achievement in one or more of the above areas, sound character,<br />

eagerness to learn and a willingness to teach others.<br />

Siemens Westinghouse Competition in Math, Science & Technology<br />

Deadline: October 1<br />

Criteria: High school seniors are eligible to enter individual research<br />

projects in the competition and all high school students (grades 9-12)<br />

are eligible to enter projects as part of a 2-3-member team. The<br />

competition rewards students for developing and demonstrating their<br />

talent for scientific research and it focuses primarily on the scientific<br />

merit of the student’s research. The foundation is looking for<br />

originality, persistence and dedication that will lead to success in a<br />

scientific or math related career. Students may register on line at the<br />

College Board beginning in July. SIEMENS is in partnership with<br />

Carnegie Mellon University, Georgia Institute of Technology,<br />

Massachusetts Institute of Technology, University of California,<br />

Berkeley, University of Notre Dame, and the University of Texas at<br />

Hawaii; scholastic achievements, and financial need, personal<br />

employment experience, a GPA of at least 3.0+, two letters of<br />

reference, Transcript with SAT scores. Recipients of the scholarship<br />

shall have to take a least one full credit course in humanities to<br />

include one of the following subjects: Irish history and/or literature. If<br />

competitive examination SAT/ACT, scholastic record, contribution to<br />

community affairs. The ideal candidate is a student with an average<br />

GPA and who comes from a financially needy family and who has a<br />

Criteria: Candidates must be a graduating senior at an accredited<br />

public, private or parochial high school, be a US citizen and Hawaii<br />

resident, have a strong record of scholastic achievement and potential<br />

(GPA, SAT/ACT scores), participate in co-curricular and extra curricular<br />

activities, participate in community service activities, be an active<br />

candidate for undergraduate acceptance into an accredited/licensed<br />

business, technical, community college or four-year college (there are<br />

no restrictions on the location of the school or field of study), and<br />

demonstrate need for financial assistance.<br />

Patriot’s Pen Contest: (Grades 6,7,8)<br />

Criteria: There are four entry levels for this writing contest: local,<br />

regional, state and national level. The winner for each state level<br />

competes for the national first place prize. Open to 6 th , 7 th , or 8 th grade<br />

students. Foreign exchange students are excluded from the contest.<br />

Judgment is on knowledge of the theme (20 points), theme<br />

development (50 points) and clarity of ideas (30 points). Essay is to be<br />

written by the student, typewritten (cannot be less than 300 words or<br />

over 400 words) Type of topic: “What Service to Our Country<br />

Means to Me.” It should be positive and focus clearly on the theme.<br />

Application entry form should be attached. All words are counted with<br />

the exception of the title and/or footnotes. Teacher may check essay<br />

for punctuation, grammar/spelling but the content must remain the<br />

contestant’s. 29 winners all receive at least $1000.<br />

Voice of Democracy: Patriotic Audio Essay Competition<br />

Criteria: Open to students in Grades 9-12. Foreign exchange<br />

students and previous winners are ineligible. The student is to record<br />

an original 3-5 minute essay on a standard cassette tape or CD on the<br />

following theme: 2004-2005 “Celebrating Our Veterans Service”<br />

Based on originality (40 points) treatment of theme should show<br />

imagination and human interest, Content: (40 points) clearly<br />

express your ideas in an organized manner, fully develop your theme<br />

and use transitions to move smoothly from one idea to another.

Criteria: The Wendy’s High <strong>School</strong> Heisman Award is designed to<br />

recognize students who are high achievers in academics, community<br />

service and athletics—those who can truly be considered role models<br />

by their peers, based on junior year performance that participates in<br />

sports sanctioned by the National Federation of State High <strong>School</strong><br />

Associations.<br />

Qualifications: Senior Student Athlete with a 3.00+ cumulative<br />

WESCON <strong>Scholarship</strong> in Electronic Engineering<br />

Criteria: This scholarship was initiated in 1986 to honor the seven<br />

astronauts who lost their lives aboard the Space Shuttle Challenger. It<br />

is sponsored by the West Coast Electronics Show and Convention<br />

(WESCON) whose principal supporter is the Institute of Electrical and<br />

Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Region 6 <strong>Scholarship</strong>s are made available<br />

in August following high school graduation. Awards are made directly<br />

to the college or university of the winner’s choice after verification of<br />

12 semester credits in approved study. The WESCON <strong>Scholarship</strong> is<br />

open only to high school JUNIORS. It is limited to students who<br />

will major in electronic engineering or an approved associated<br />

field at a four-year college or university. The student applicant<br />

must submit a 500-600 word essay, typed and single-spaced,<br />

with the student’s name at the top of the first page. A high<br />

school administrator must sign line #16 affirming student’s<br />

Western Undergraduate Exchange<br />

Criteria: WUE is the Western Undergraduate Exchange, a program<br />

coordinated by the Western Interstate Commission for High Education<br />

(WICHE). Through WUE, students in western states (Alaska, Arizona,<br />

Colorado, Hawaii, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, North<br />

Dakota, Oregon, Utah, Washington, Wyoming) may enroll in many<br />

two-year and four-year public college programs at a reduced tuition<br />

level: 150% of the institution’s regular resident tuition. In all cases,<br />

WUE tuition is considerably less than nonresident tuition. Note:<br />

Residents of Hawaii may now enroll as WUE students in fouryear<br />

programs and community colleges. Virtually allundergraduate<br />

fields are available to WUE students at one or more of<br />

the participating colleges and universities. Some institutions have<br />

opened their entire curriculum on a space-available or first-come, firstserve<br />
