Safe Routes to Schools
• Taught and provided encouragement activities at 47
public and 5 private schools, reaching 22,479 children.
• Implemented numerous community events to encourage
kids to walk and bike to school: International Walk
to School Day occurred at 41 schools with 50–100% of
each school participating; Earth Day Ride n’ Seek was
enjoyed by 34 teams of 3–5 people each.
• Frequent Rider Miles contest was conducted at 35
schools.
• The engineering component of the program assisted
schools with grant applications and resulted in 13
project awards in the Dixie, Larkspur, Mill Valley,
Novato, Ross Valley and San Rafael school districts, and
for St. Patrick’s private school.
• Created the new Pedal Power schoolwide assembly
with a new song by famed children’s songster Tim
Cain. The skit depicts the health and environmental
problems of being stuck in traffic, the benefits of
bicycling demonstrated by the Traffic Transformer, and
the way to a world of walking and biking without
pollution. Nine schools were treated to the assembly
in San Rafael, Larkspur, Mill Valley, Fairfax, Novato and
San Anselmo.
Public Outreach
• Our 18 Bike to Work Day Energizer Stations saw
a 38% increase in cyclists (4,100 total) over last year.
Marin had 32 teams participating in the regional Team
Bike Challenge – twice as many as last year. Several
new activities were initiated in West Marin: reflective
triangles given out, raffle prizes awarded, a community
ride and “Bike to Point Reyes” day was held.
• Hosted the Marin Century’s Nicasio rest stop in
August where we provided bike parking, refreshments,
bike repairs and advocacy information to 2,700 riders.
Gained 73 new members from the event.
• Held our annual Big Bike Bash party at the Marinwood
Community Center in November with a colorful
fall theme, dinner, drinks, silent and live auctions, and
DJ music.
• Our Tunnel float participated in the Mill Valley
Memorial Day and the Twin Cities Fourth
of July paradeS. Enthusiastic volunteers pushed
the rolling tunnel while others walked, bicycled and
skateboarded through it.
• Tour of California bike race again honored MCBC
as a beneficiary; in exchange we hosted a booth at the
Expo, provided valet bike parking and conducted a bike
rodeo for children.
• MCBC grew our membership through new recruitment
activities in spring, resulting in 141 new
members at cycling route recruitment stations, Bike
to Work Day energizer stations, Mountain Play tabling
and local festivals and events.
