Overview of 2007 Accident Trends <strong>and</strong> Factors<br />

The annual AOPA Air Safety Foundation’s Joseph<br />

T. <strong>Nall</strong> <strong>Report</strong> is the nation’s foremost review<br />

<strong>and</strong> analysis of general aviation (GA) safety for<br />

the preceding year. It is designed to help the<br />

aviation community, members of the media, <strong>and</strong><br />

the public to better underst<strong>and</strong> the factors involved<br />

in GA accidents.<br />

GA is defined as all flying except for scheduled<br />

airline <strong>and</strong> military flights, <strong>and</strong> comprises the majority<br />

of aviation activity in the United States.<br />

Statistics used in this report are based on<br />

National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB)<br />

investigations of GA accidents that occurred in<br />

2007 involving fixed-wing aircraft with a gross<br />

weight of 12,500 pounds or less. Such airplanes<br />

account for about 90 percent of all GA aircraft.<br />

The Joseph T. <strong>Nall</strong> <strong>Report</strong> analyzes accident<br />

data by cause <strong>and</strong> category, type of operation,<br />

class of aircraft, <strong>and</strong> other factors. This year’s<br />

edition explores the characteristics of the different<br />

types of GA accidents, with closest attention<br />

to those that account for the largest<br />

numbers of accidents <strong>and</strong> fatalities.<br />

The total number of GA accidents is relatively<br />

low, but remains significantly higher than the<br />

airlines. (See the Appendix on page 31 for an<br />

overview of GA vs. airline safety.) This is due, in<br />

part, to more diverse levels of pilot experience<br />

<strong>and</strong> training, a less restrictive regulatory structure,<br />

different aircraft capabilities, <strong>and</strong> the more<br />

challenging operating environment of GA.<br />
