Amateur-Built <strong>Aircraft</strong><br />

226 total/55 fatal<br />

The amateur-built aircraft fleet includes a wide variety<br />

of designs <strong>and</strong> technologies, <strong>and</strong> covers the full<br />

range from simple, low-performance pleasure craft<br />

to high-tech, high-performance models. Most are<br />

single-engine. <strong>Pilots</strong> of amateur-built aircraft represent<br />

the full range of experience <strong>and</strong> certification.<br />

226 amateur-built aircraft were involved in accidents,<br />

<strong>and</strong> 55 (24.3 percent) of these were fatal.<br />

All were single-engine <strong>and</strong> 205 (90.7 percent) had<br />

fixed gear (including 10 seaplanes or amphibians).<br />

A total of 102 (including three with retractable<br />

gear <strong>and</strong> one amphibian) had conventional l<strong>and</strong>ing<br />

gear (Figure 42).<br />

Figure 43 tracks the proportion of accidents in<br />

amateur-built aircraft to overall GA accidents over<br />

the last ten years. Total amateur-built accidents<br />

continue to increase.<br />

The accident factor distribution is not markedly<br />

different from that in manufactured airplanes, with<br />

the exception of a somewhat higher proportion of<br />

maneuvering accidents (Figure 44).<br />
