OFF-AIRPORT 7 TOTAL/NONE FATAL<br />

INJURIES 4 SERIOUS/34 MINOR INJURIES<br />

One of the myths surrounding GA is the perceived<br />

danger of light aircraft falling from the sky.<br />

In 1999, there were no fatalities <strong>and</strong> four serious<br />

injuries to off-airport byst<strong>and</strong>ers. There were 34<br />

minor injuries to byst<strong>and</strong>ers throughout the year.<br />

This is up from 1998, when six people suffered<br />

minor injuries but no byst<strong>and</strong>ers were seriously<br />

injured in off-airport GA aircraft accidents. In 1998,<br />

however, three byst<strong>and</strong>ers were killed on the<br />

ground as a result of GA airplane accidents. In<br />

November 1999, a Bonanza crashed shortly after<br />

taking off from Linden, New Jersey. The wreckage<br />

covered more than a city block <strong>and</strong> 27 people were<br />

injured on the ground. The chart to the right<br />

shows trends in this area.<br />

This problem is also not confined entirely to<br />

GA. In 1998, an otherwise fatality-free year for the<br />

PILOT INCAPACITATION 3 TOTAL/3 FATAL<br />

Three accidents have been identified during<br />

1999 in which pilot incapacitation, other than from<br />

drugs or alcohol, was listed as a factor at the time<br />

of this report. All three pilots suffered heart<br />

attacks. In addition, the incapacitation of a frontseat<br />

passenger due to motion sickness led to minor<br />

injuries in a fourth accident.<br />

PROPELLER STRIKE INJURIES 8 TOTAL/2 FATAL<br />

Three pilots/passengers were struck by turning<br />

propellers during 1999. Two of them were killed,<br />

<strong>and</strong> one was seriously injured. These accidents were<br />

a combination of pilots attempting to h<strong>and</strong> propstart<br />

airplanes (other than those designed without<br />

starters), <strong>and</strong> people in the ramp area inadvertently<br />

coming into contact with moving propellers.<br />

This continues to be an area where a small, but<br />

consistent, number of serious injuries <strong>and</strong> fatalities<br />

occur. <strong>Pilots</strong>, flight schools, <strong>and</strong> fixed-base operators<br />

must ensure that propeller safety is included in their<br />
